JEWELRY DESIGNERJewelry designers are usually drawn to their career because of a passion for artistic pursuits and fashion. Designers may work with jewelers and individual customers to create one-of-a-kind jewelry, or they may work for manufacturers developing new pieces for the company’s collec-tions. Some entrepreneurial designers goon to start businesses, selling designer jewelryunder their own names.

METALSMITHMetalsmithing can be a rewarding career for those who are creative and skilled with their hands. The metalsmith develops skills in shaping, texturing, forming, and joining metal through fabrication and casting. Those with metalsmith skills can go on to teach on theuniversity level; design custom hollowware, jewelry and wedding rings; work in jewelryrepair and stone setting; and collaborate withfashion designers.

Partnerships

WORKING WITH HALSTEADThe School of Jewelry & Metal Arts is proud to partner with Hilary Halstead Scott, president of international jewelry supply wholesaler Halstead, whose customers run businesses such as ecommerce stores, studio galleries, private label production for mass retail, and everything in between. Scott understands that it can be difficult and scary for students to think beyond graduation day and leave the security of the Academy’s metal studio. Our partnership allows students to tap into her expertise and receive guid-ance in entrepreneurship, choosing a career path, andobtaining professional grants.

“Coaching and advising new jewelers is one of my favorite things. Young artists are bubbling over with questions, ideas, and worries. The enthusiasm of newly minted makers is contagious, and it never fails to reignite my love for the jewelry world.”

Scott’s passion is supporting the small jewelry business community. The Halstead Grant, provided by the Halstead family company and now in its 13th year, is a prestigious honor awarded annually toan emerging jewelry artist in the United States. The grant is a development program designedto push new jewelers to think strategically abouttheir business plans. The winner receives $7,500in start-up funding along with $1,000 in jewelrysupplies and media recognition in the industry.Top 10 finalists are also acknowledged with smallercash prizes.

Candidates emerge from the process with specific goals and a better understanding of what it means to run a successful independent jewelry studio. Past winners and finalists often cite the experience as a pivotal step in their entrepreneurial journeys.

The San Francisco Bay Area is a hub for the arts. Our program has the advantage of being located in the heart of a vibrant metalsmithing community with world-class museums and galleries, allowing you to gather real-world work experience from award-winning artists and designers through internships and otheremployment opportunities.
