Welcome to the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and especially to the School of Engineering. Since 1966 this community of engineering departments has grown into a highly-reputed centre of technological research. We continually develop, advance and integrate new technology to meet the demands of society.

Its five departments: Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Chemical and Bio-engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Sci-ence offer programmes at Bachelor/Master level; PhD-programmes are also available in all dis-ciplines.

Against the background of a rising demand for internationalization and global cooperation in the field of engineering sciences we have established a variety of international study programmes in order to make studying in Erlangen more attractive for young engineers from around the world and to give our students the opportunity to study and research in an international environment.

A unique feature in Germany is the integration of our School of Engineering into a traditional university, thus creating a close-knit network of interdisciplinary collaboration at the very highest level. The best evidence of this is our position in renowned academic rankings as one of the Top-Ten universities in Germany, our recent achievements in the German Excellence Initiative and an outstanding international network of researchers and students.

Advance through Networks

The Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg founded in 1743 with its 26.000 students and more than 400 professors is not only a major national and international player in Academia but also an important economic force in the region. It is present in all fields of knowl-edge and science with a wide range of inter-disciplinary courses. The main focus in research and teaching is to be found in interdisciplinary collaboration between Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in close cooperation with the classical university disciplines. The lively dialogue between five schools, 22 departments and numerous sub-jects is the University´s hallmark and inspired its slogan “Advance through Networks”.High-profile national and international awards as well as excellent placements in research ran-kings are proof of its research achievements. 9 collaborative research centres and 8 graduate research units which are currently sited at the University focus on biomedical, technological and natural-scientific fields.The University is part of a huge international network and maintains close ties with 500 part-ner universities in 62 countries. It is one of the most attractive German universities for visiting academics from abroad. Every year more and more Humboldt scholars and prize-winning re-searchers choose this northern Bavarian uni-versity as their research base.

Engineering – Research – Teaching

The School of Engineering was founded in 1966, and has since grown into a highly repu-table centre of technological research. On the basis of funds awarded per professor, it ranks continuously among the leaders for the highly competitive and prestigious research funding awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The School of Engineering consists of five de-partments:

Excellent profiles are medical technology (in cooperation with Siemens Healthcare), engi-neering of advanced materials (with a Cluster of Excellence from the German Excellence Initiati-ve), optics (in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light) and micro- and nanoelectronics (in cooperation with the biggest Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, the inventor of the world famous mp3-Standard).

The Excellence Initiative launched by the Ger-man federal and state governments provides an outstanding environment for training and re-search at the University.

Against the background of an increasingly inter-disciplinary world of engineering, many of the chairs within the School of Engineering work on cooperative projects closely with each other, as well as with chairs in other schools within and outside the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Numerous cooperative projects involving part-nerships between industries and the university guarantee the rapid transfer of research results.

The Department of Chemical and Bioenginee-ring provides research opportunities leading to the Ph.D. degree in one of its areas of spe-cialisation. The following list gives just a small insight into the diversity of the research inves-tigations:

For admission to the Ph.D. programme in Che-mical and Bioengineering an outstanding de-gree at the Master or Dipl.-Ing. level in chemical engineering, bioengineering or exceptionally mechanical engineering is expected. A good background in mathematics and computer programming are desirable. Candidates whose undergraduate degree is not equivalent to the M.Sc. degree in Chemical and Bioengineering may be required to take selected lectures or practical work in a preparatory course. A good

command of English is essential and facility in German is recommended. German language classes, if necessary, form part of the prepara-tory course and the main Ph.D. programme.

Chemical and bioengineering represents the branch of the engineering sciences which is concerned with the chemical and biochemical conversion of materials and the related techni-cal processes and equipment.

The teaching programme in Chemical and Bio-engineering (CBI) leads consecutively to the degrees „Bachelor of Science“ (nominally 6 se-mesters) and „Master of Science“ (nominally 4 semesters). About half the subjects in the Mas-ter programme are taught in English, but some knowledge of German is very advisable. The interdisciplinary programme allows specialisati-on in one of the fields Biotechnology, Technical Chemistry, Process Engineering and Product Design, and Thermofluid Dynamics.

Possible fields of activity One of the main tasks of chemical and bioen-gineers is the implementation on a production scale of processes for material conversion de-veloped on a laboratory scale by chemists and biologists. Through the optimization of these processes they work to improve product cha-racteristics and to reduce unwanted by-pro-ducts and waste. Chemical and bioengineers are found not only in the chemical industry but also in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical in-dustry, the food processing and beverages industries, plant construction, the automotive

industry, energy engineering and the environ-mental protection sector. Chemical and bioen-gineers undertake highly responsible jobs in the fields of research and development, production, plant design, construction and operation, mar-keting and management.

The Computational Engineering (CE) PhD pro-gramme is open to excellent graduates of the CE Master Programme in Erlangen or external applicants with a comparable education. Appli-cants with outstanding degrees in mathematics, computer sciences or in one of the Technical Application Fields offered in Erlangen are wel-come, especially if they have interest in inter-disciplinary research. Within the programme‘s duration doctoral fellows are expected to pre-sent their research at national and international conferences, and to publish their research re-sults in international journals. Due to the focus of this research towards applications, a variety of local, national and international companies and research institutions cooperate with depart-ments of the Erlangen Faculty of Engineering, e.g. Siemens, Lucent, BMW, AUDI, Ericsson, Fraunhofer Institutes.

Computational Engineering – Combining clas­sical german engineering skills with high­ performance computing expertise.

In addition to the traditional methodologies of theoretical modelling and experimental exploration, simulation has become an important tool in applications from fundamental research to product development. The International Mas-ter Programme in Computational Engineering extends beyond classical German engineering education and applied mathematics to prepare students perfectly for these new challenges.It is designed to allow students to pursue computer science studies together with an engineering field of their choice, the so-called Technical Application Field (TAF):

The students get the basic interdisciplinary knowledge necessary for the computer-science-orientated technical specialization.

“Do more – get more”: As an extension to the regular CE Master Pro-gramme particularly excellent students will have the opportunity of joining the Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering from the se-cond semester. They will attend additional cour-ses also at the Technical University of Munich and improve their soft skills to achieve the title “Master with Honours” within the framework of the Elite Network Bavaria (ENB).

Double Degree: After one year of studies in Erlangen students have the possibility to achieve a double degree by studying two semesters at the renowned Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden.

Possible fields of activity Simulation of technical processes, scientific vi-sualization, process optimization, virtual product development, design decisions, and so on.

Optical technology is central to scientific and industrial development in the 21st century. The master Programme in Advanced opti­cal Technologies (MAOT) provides extensive training in all applied fields of modern optical technologies.

Erlangen is one of the leading centres of excel-lence for optics and optical technologies in Ger-many and the world. In addition to the MAOT, the PhD programme SAOT in Optical Techno-logies and the Max-Planck-Institute for Science of Light is located in Erlangen. The application of optics in medicine is supported by an out-standing hospital infrastructure. Two Fraunhofer Institutes and the Bavarian Laser Centre com-plete the picture.

The 2-year programme covers six subjects: g Optical metrologyg Optical material and systemsg Optics in communicationg Computational opticsg Optics in medicineg Optical material processing.

Students are given an introduction to all six topics and choose three as major subjects. In the interdisciplinary programme, lectures are conducted by experts from physics, medicine, computer science and engineering (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering).

MAOT has its own teaching rooms as well as computer-equipped work stations for their stu-

dents. Lectures are given in small groups with a high level of interactivity. The programme is part of the Elite Network of Bavaria. MAOT coopera-tes closely with the SAOT which is located in the same building and which has brand new lab fa-cilities. Master and PhD students work together in classes or in research groups with the SAOT main supervisors.

Advanced optical Technologies (Doctoral Programme)

The Graduate School in Advanced Optical Tech-nologies (SAOT) offers doctoral research within the School of Engineering, the School of Sci-ence and the Medical School of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

A doctoral programme starts typically with a course on Fundamentals of Optical Technolo-gies. Each doctoral student chooses then three of the six application areas metrology, materi-al processing, medicine, communication and information technologies, materials and sys-tems or computational optics to acquire broad knowledge in the area of optical technology. A research thesis project in one of these fields un-der the supervision of a SAOT mentor comp-letes the requirements for the doctoral degree.

During the programme doctoral candidates have the opportunity to attend academies which foster intensive team work in the solu-tion of optical problems. A credit point scheme encourages not only the participation in these academies but also the attendance at scientific conferences, workshops and lectures, the pub-lication of scientific papers and the acquisition of soft skills.

Research at the SAOT can be undertaken in co-operation with three leading research centres in Erlangen: the Bavarian Laser Centre, the Fraun-hofer Institute of Integrated Systems and Device Technology and the Max Planck Institute of Op-tics, Information and Photonics. The contributing institutions belong to the leading universities in the field. It provides the unique opportunity to couple products with processes for novel and econo­mical production. ”

The interdisciplinary elite Master programme Advanced Materials and Processes (MAP) is si-tuated between Materials Science and Chemi-cal/Bioengineering. Depending on their previous studies students acquire individually composed basic knowledge for the focal subjects during the first semester. From semester two the students choose two out of four focal subjects:

g Advanced Processesg Biomaterials and Bioprocessingg Computational Materials Science and Pro-

cess Simulationg Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology

The programme has a remarkably high propor-tion of practical and project work.Furthermore the programme is complemented by various soft skills seminars. In these seminars students learn key competences regarding eco-nomics, management and self-development. 12 weeks of industrial internships secure important insights into potential career paths as well as cut-ting-edge issues in research and development.This programme was established within the framework of the Elite Network of Bavaria, aiming to be challenging individual training for highly motivated graduate students. In cooperation with the Universities of Bayreuth and Würzburg the

students benefit from the highly reputed know-ledge of three Bavarian universities.

mAP in a nutshell: an excellent preparation for an executive position in professional life.

Possible fields of activity: Key functions in re-search, development and technical marketing.

A particularity of the course is the close con­nection between the areas of electronics, elec­trical communication and information techno­logy and subjects of computer science with emphasis on systems engineering. This offers a unique approach for a unified perspective on systems of information and multimedia tech­nology.

Information and multimedia technology have experienced a rapid growth and have attained a high economic importance worldwide. This progress is mainly driven by theoretical achieve-ments based on complex mathematical concepts and algorithms and by the application of modern abstract methods. Examples are schemes for digital speech, audio and video coding, digital transmission, embedded systems, and commu-nication networks.The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) which are highly respected in information and multime-dia technology have set up an elite co-operation project including a well-known Fraunhofer In-stitute within the framework of the Elite Network of Bavaria. The Master study programme is based on Bache-lor and diploma programms at FAU and TUM with focus on information and communication techno-logy. These programms both permit specializati-on in selected topics up to the state of the art in scientific research in the area of systems of infor-mation and multimedia technology and the acqui-sition of interdisciplinary knowledge. A personal mentor is assigned to each student who helps her/him in arranging an individual course programme.

Excellent support for excellent students

Tuition fees

Tuition fees in Germany are comparatively low. The University Erlangen-Nuremberg currently (2009/2010) charges 542 € per semester. However, Ph.D. students do not have to pay tuition fees for up to six semesters.

All university facilities can be used by students free of charge. Exams are free of charge as well. Some specific language courses need to be paid for separately.

Scholarships

The FAU does not have a general scholarship-scheme. However, some of the study program-mes presented in this brochure may offer schol-arships (e.g. SAOT, MAP, CE, MAOT).

The “German Academic Exchange Service” (DAAD) offers scholarships for international stu-dents (http://www.daad.de).

Support with first steps in Erlangen

The international courses provide special sup-port for the students´ first weeks in Erlangen. They will assist you e.g. with accommodation, registration or insurances. Additionally the Inter-national Office of the School of Engineering and the Central Office for International Affairs are open for all questions of students from abroad.

University services

In addition to the excellent teaching facilities the university offers a lot of features for improving your life:Cafeterias, German and other language cour-ses, sports facilities (even for sailing and clim-bing), academic orchestra & chorus, various libraries, students councils, buddy programme, cultural events and so on. Feel comfortable about study ing in Erlangen!

Elite Network of Bavaria

Best possible support of outstanding ta­lents at Bavarian universities

In 2004 the government of Bavaria in coope-ration with the Bavarian Business association launched a programme with the aim to support young academic talents.

The Elite Network of Bavaria provides ideal conditions for highly qualified students

The special study programmes entail a remar-kably high part of practical courses (e.g. pro-ject work). In addition the students are offered soft skill courses in which they learn key com-petences regarding economics, management and personal training.Students are also invited to attend summer or winter academies respectively. The courses

offered in those academies vary from specific subject related courses to soft skill workshops.The elite programme runs in parallel to the nor-mal study programme.Successful students are awarded a Master with honours degree.

In 2005 the German federal and state govern-ments agreed on an initiative to promote top-level research in Germany. The Excellence Initi-ative aims to strengthen science and research in Germany in the long term, improve its internati-onal competitiveness and raise the profile of the top performers in academia and research.

Living in Erlangen and nuremberg

Work- Life - BalanceErlangen, a town of about 100,000 residents, is situated in in the Franconian region of Bavaria in southeast Germany. The baroque city centre was built around a manor house (Schloss) with an extensive garden (“Schlossgarten”) which is nowadays the domicile of the central university administration. Erlangen is economically domi-nated by two major entrepreneurs: the Friedrich Alexander University with its university hospitals and the global corporation Siemens.

AccessibilityErlangen and Nuremberg can easily be reached by train. There is also an international airport in Nuremberg.

Culture A wide variety of cultural events is offered in numerous cinemas, theatres and the town hall of Erlangen. Especially worth mentioning is the biennial Comic Salon where internationally re-nowned comic artists have a get-together, the Long Night of Sciences with a huge program-me of lectures and shows throughout Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg, and, of course, the beau-tiful “Schlossgartenfest”, an annual black-tie festivity of the university. At Whitsun the famous fair called “Bergkirchweih” attracts thousands of people with music and entertainment.Due to its greater size and its historical back-ground Nuremberg disposes of an even bigger cultural offering. The castle above the historical city centre, the Nuremberg Playhouse, the Ope-ra and the National Museum (amongst many others) are always worth a visit. Those who are more interested in the recent historical back-

ground of the city are strongly advised to visit the Documentation Center. Some of the major annual events in Nuremberg are the internationally famous music festival “Rock im Park”, the “Blue Night” with a vast va-riety of music, cabaret and arts, and the “Tucher Medieval Games” in the historical moat.Visitors who come during the winter time should, of course, pay a visit to the world famous “Christ-kindlesmarkt” during the Advent season.

leisure time activitiesSport clubs, swimming pools, tennis and squash courts and further sport facilities complete the leisure time possibilities. The university offers its own university sports and music programme for all students and staff of the university. Moreover, the cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg with its bars and clubs as well as shopping malls allow for a great student day – and nightlife.

TrafficThe favoured vehicle especially for students is the bicycle that has attracted many fans in this level, bike-friendly town. However, there is a very good bus network as well.

VicinitySituated to the south of Erlangen and Nuremberg is the Franconian Lake District with numerous water sport possibilities. The university offers its own sailing facilities there. To the north there is Bamberg, a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO. A scenic region northeast of Erlangen known as “Franconian Switzerland” offers lots of possibili-ties for hiking, climbing, canoeing and taverns.
