MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the School of Agriculture to provide educational programs on both the

theory and practice of agricultural science enabling the graduate to compete within and contribute to this diverse field at the producer, industry, and graduate student level. This mission is accomplished through degree options in Agribusiness, Animal Science, Plant and Soil Science, and General Agriculture. Four agriculture minors are also offered. Those desiring agricultural degree programs not offered at the University of Arkansas at Monticello are provided introductory course work and advising designed to facilitate transfer to another institution. In addition, students desiring to enter veterinary school are provided course work and advising aimed at meeting the requirements of institutions offering a degree in veterinary medicine.

CURRICULUM

Course enrollment was good last year with 21 of our 24 regular courses having double digit enrollment. Five of our upper level classes had enrollments of 20 or more. Our curriculum is accomplishing the task for which it was designed.

Our minors have not caught on as no one is currently an Animal Science minor, Plant and Soil Science minor, or an Ag Business minor. Ag internship is another class that is underutilized by our student body.

FACILITIES Contractors submitted bids to repair the building’s foundation and that work was completed last fall. A new chiller was installed in the back hallway in August. The old weight room was vacated by Athletics in June. Modifications to the building to make it a functioning head house were completed and it was heavily used for instruction and research last year.

SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Dr. Whitney Whitworth traveled to New Orleans to participate in the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 10-14, 2011.. She presented a poster titled “Validation and cross-prediction of single or dual accelerometers for the prediction of grazing, standing/waling, and lying behavior of beef cattle using linear discriminant analysis”.

Dr. Kelly Bryant and Dr. Robert Stark attended the Arkansas Seed Dealers Convention in

Memphis, TN on July 21st and 22nd. Rusty Jones conducted the annual Boll Weevil Stampede and it was a success and attracted

visitors and participants to the area. The Rodeo team earned lots of points during the rodeo season and had a good year. Rusty was the speaker at the Monticello Chamber of Commerce meeting on March 14, 2012.

Dr. Robert Stark attended the Soil and Water Conservation 66th International Annual

Conference on July 16-20, 2011. Dr. Robert Stark coordinated a webinar presentation on the 2012 farm bill at the University of

Arkansas at Monticello campus on October 11, 2011. Dr. Whitney Whitworth participated in the 56th Annual Beef Cattle Short Course held at Texas

A&M University August 2-4, 2011. Dr. Whitney Whitworth served as a judge in the stock shows at the Lincoln County Fair and the

Drew County Fair in September 2011. Dr. Whitney Whitworth was a speaker at the 2011 River Valley Nutrient Management Tour on

October 14, 2011. Her topic was “Reproductive and Genetic Improvements that Impact your Bottom Line”.

Dr. Robert Stark attended the Mississippi Agricultural Economics Association meeting on

November 3-5, 2011. It was held in Starkville, Mississippi at the Mississippi State University.

Dr. Robert Stark attended the 56th Annual Rural Life Conference in Pine Bluff, AR on February

18, 2012. Dr. Paul Francis and Dr. Robert Stark attended the Tri-State Soybean Forum held in Oak Grove,

LA on November 1, 2011. Dr. Kelly Bryant attended the Arkansas Crop Management Conference held in Little Rock, AR

January 18-21, 2012. Dr. Paul Francis attended the AR Crop Management Conference on January 18th and 19th in

Little Rock, AR.

Dr. Whitney Whitworth served as a judge in the Animal Sciences category for the 2012 Regional Science Fair held on the UAM campus in March 2012. Also serving as judges in the fair in the Plant Sciences division were Dr. Paul Francis and Dr. Robert Stark.

Dr. Kelly Bryant traveled to Centerton, AR to attend the NIRA Rodeo where UAM’s Rodeo Team

was participating on April 26-27, 2012. The annual Agriculture Awards Banquet was held April 24, 2012 at the Senate room located in

the University Center to recognize and honor agriculture students and members of the UAM Rodeo Team for their accomplishments. In addition to the students present, special guests included UAM administrators, scholarship donors, and School of Agriculture faculty and staff.

Dr. Kelly Bryant assisted Rohwer Research Station director, Larry Earnest, in hosting the Crops

Field Day held at the station on July 19, 2012. Other faculty from the UAM School of Agriculture attended the activity.

Dr. Kelly Bryant helped plan and conduct a Fencing and Grazing Field Day that was held on

September 8, 2011 on the UAM campus involving University and Natural Resources Conservation Service personnel. It was sponsored by Arkansas Grazing Lands Coalition. Dr. Whitney Whitworth provided assistance in the tours of the stream bank stabilization.

Dr. Kelly Bryant and Dr. Whitney Whitworth were nominated for Alpha Chi National Honor

Society’s Administrator and Teacher of the Year Awards, respectively, for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Whitney Whitworth gave a presentation on “Replacement Heifer Evaluation” at the Beef

and Forage Field Day held at the Southeast Research and Extension Center on April 26, 2012. Ranchers and producers, as well as University personnel, participated in the evening’s activities.

Dr. Robert Stark attended the State FFA Convention, held at Camp Couchdale near Hot Springs,

on June 5-7, 2012. Dr. Stark manned a booth featuring the UAM School of Agriculture and visited with potential students who were attending the convention.

Dr. Paul Francis and Dr. Stark once again organized the “Tomatoes at the Trotter” at the UAM

Trotter House on June 21, 2012. It consisted of the 15 variety taste testing along with a meal created with the special heirloom tomato. Half of the proceeds went to the UAM School of Agriculture.

Dr. Paul Francis and Dr. Stark organized the tasting portion of the “Tomatoes at the Capitol”

sponsored by the Arkansas Agriculture Department on June 27, 2012 at the state capitol.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

During the year, School of Agriculture students participated in a number of field trips and other activities:

Bobby Evans, a junior and member of the UAM Debate team finished second in the sweepstakes competition at the Henderson State University

The annual Back-to-School Picnic hosted by the School of Agriculture faculty and staff for new and returning students was held at the Agriculture Building on August 30, 2011.

On September 28, 2011 students in Fiber and Oil Seed class toured the Rohwer Experiment Station.

School of Agriculture faculty/former faculty and staff participated in tailgating activities at UAM’s Homecoming on October 29, 2011. Bar-B-Q, trimmings and drinks were available to all who visited the Agriculture tent. Several agriculture alumni were in attendance.

Kenneth Hale, Zach Hill, Whitney McGregor and Will Parrish presented their experience at their internships on October 20, 2011.

On November 8, 2011- Agriculture major, Kacie Johnson, was among the thirty-four inductees into the UAM chapter of Alpha Chi (Arkansas Honor Society). Brett Stewart was also initiated as the Vice President at this time.

November 11, 2011 – Agriculture faculty and students, under the leadership of Dr. Whitney Whitworth, along with members of the Agriculture Alumni Society, conducted a fundraiser for the Robert C. Kirst Scholarship. Tyson Foods furnishes the chicken which is prepared by their Cooking Team. Agriculture students are responsible for selling tickets for the dinners and delivering the dinners. Proceeds from this event provide some of the funds for the Kirst Scholarship which is awarded to two agriculture majors each year.

Mr. Greg Peton with Pioneer Hi-Bred was the guest speaker in Agriculture Orientation and Senior Seminar on November 9, 2012. He offered suggestions on how a student should prepare for a successful career.

November 17, 2011 – Members of Dr. Robert Stark’s Economics of Environmental Management class presented a seminar entitled “Feral Hog 101” examining the feral hog situation in Arkansas and surrounding states.

On Wednesday, December 7, 2011, Tyson foods provide lunch for the students and faculty. They visited with students interested in a career with them after lunch.

Students in the Agricultural Policy class traveled to Little Rock on February 21, 2012 to visit the Arkansas State Capitol, meet legislators, and observe proceedings conducted at the Capitol during that day.

Justin Jones, Senior presented a poster at the Southern Region Meeting of American Society of Agronomy in Birmingham, AL titled “Integration of Heirloom Tomatoes with Contemporary Vine-Ripened Fresh Market Operations”, on February 4-7, 2012. Jones placed 3rd in the undergraduate poster competition. He was accompanied by Dr. Paul Francis.

Dr. Stark and eight students attended the SAEA Quiz Bowl in Birmingham, AL for competition.

March 2-3, 2012 – Nine UAM agriculture students attended the Collegiate Farm Bureau State Convention held in Little Rock. TEAM BOLL WEEVIL, consisted of Chris Church, Carrin Cross, Ethan Ferguson Kristal Ferguson April Quattlebaum, John David Farabough,

Brittany Harpole, Tyler Hicks and Andrew Raddle. Tyler Hicks represented the team at the State Finals Discussion Meet Contestant.

Whitney McGregor, a senior PreVet major from Monticello, was selected to receive the 2012 Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities Award.

Nine students participated in the School of Agriculture Academics Olympics competition, with Spencer Lybrand being selected to represent the School of Agriculture in the campus-wide finals.

More than 200 rodeo cowboys and cowgirls from 13 colleges and universities competed in the 2012 Boll Weevil Stampede at the Drew County Fairgrounds hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello March 29 through March 31.

Of the 43 students serving as UAM Ambassadors for 2011-12, three students were from the School of Agriculture: Brittany Harpole, Whitney McGregor, and Kacie Johnson.
