Curriculum Information● Math 5● Math 5/6

Page 14: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

Math 5 - Major LearningIn grade five, students will build their understanding of the place value system by working with decimals up to the hundredths place.

Students will also add, subtract, and multiply fractions, including fractions with unlike denominators.

They will continue to expand their geometry and measurement skills, learning the concept of volume and measuring the volume of a solid figure.

Page 15: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

Math 5 Examples• Quickly and accurately multiplying multi-digit whole numbers • Dividing numbers with up to four digits by two-digit numbers • Using exponents to express powers of 10 • Reading, writing, and comparing decimals to the thousandths place • Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to the hundredths place • Writing and interpreting mathematical expressions using symbols such as parentheses. For example, “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” can be written as 2×(8+7). • Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (bottom numbers) by converting them to fractions with matching denominators • Multiplying fractions by whole numbers and other fractions • Dividing fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions • Analyzing and determining relationships between numerical patterns • Measuring volume using multiplication and addition

Math 5/6 - Major LearningIn grade 5 content, students will multiply and divide fractions and decimal fractions. They will continue to expand their geometry and measurement skills, learning the concept of volume and measuring the volume of a solid figure.

In grade 6 content, they will learn the concepts of rates and ratios.Students will work on quickly and accurately dividing multi-digit whole numbers and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multi-digit decimals.Students will extend their previous work with fractions and decimals to understand the concept of rational numbersStudents will learn how to read, write and solve equations.

Page 19: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

Math 5/6 Examples● Multiplying fractions by whole numbers and other fractions ● Dividing fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions ● Analyzing and determining relationships between numerical patterns ● Measuring volume using multiplication and addition● Understand and applying the concepts of ratios and unit rates, and using the correct

language to describe them● Building knowledge of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions● Understand that positive and negative numbers are located on opposite sides of 0 on

a number line● Using pairs of numbers, including negative numbers, as coordinates for locating or

placing a point on a graph.● Writing and determine the value of expressions with whole number exponents

Page 20: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

Math 5/6 Examples (continued)● Identifying and writing equivalent mathematical expressions by

applying the properties of operations.● Understanding what solving an equation such as 2+x=12 means

answering the question, “What number does x have to be to make this statement true?”

● Represent and analyze the relationships between independent and dependent variables

● Solving problems involving area and volume

Tips to Help Your Child• Have your child explain what concepts they are

learning.

• Ask questions:• Can you explain? • What strategy did you use? • How else can you solve it?

• Be positive about your child’s math education.

• Homework Helpers (in Succeed Book)

• Parent Tip Sheets (sent home beginning of each

module starting this Friday)

Benchmark Advance● The Benchmark Advance Reading/Language Arts curriculum is designed to

prepare students for success in reading and writing.

● It builds knowledge through in depth study not only of reading and writing, but also of science and social studies topics.

Page 32: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

Starting the School YearBefore launching Unit 1 of instruction, teachers spend time introducing and practicing routines that are critical to students’ success throughout the year.

The lessons focus among others on:

● What a Reader’s Workshop looks and sounds like.● What active listening looks and sounds like.● Having respectful and productive conversations with peers about books and writing.● Activating reading strategies to comprehend text.● Writing about reading.● Participating in phonics and word study instruction.

.

Page 33: SCHOOL NIGHT - Montgomery County Public Schools

What Should I Expect? The routines lessons take between 7-10 instructional days.

During this time there may not be homework or graded work in reading and writing other than independent reading.
