CURRICULUM NEWS-POWERFUL LEARNING PROJECT What has happened at Glenroy West primary School Strengthening teacher practice within the classroom is always a focus at Glenroy West PS. The Inquiry Model is a key area where staff have worked diligently over the past two years to implement structured inquiry across the school and will continue to be an ongoing process. The school is also partnered with the “Powerful Learning Project” along with 60 other Victorian schools and a number of Queensland schools. The project is being led by Wayne Craig in conjunction with Principals. The Powerful learning Project essentially provides a framework for school improvement which is based on research. The framework allows the individual school to pinpoint which areas they need to focus on and develop a plan around these priorities. The program hinges itself on Four Whole School theories of Action and Six theories of Action for Teachers. As a school we are currently focussing on the whole school theory of action of:

Adopting Consistent Teaching and Learning Protocols

Emphasise Enquiry focused Teaching

Our teacher theories of action that sit beneath the whole school theories of action are:

Set challenging learning tasks

Connect feedback to data

Commit to assessment for learning

Part of our professional learning program for 2016 has been devoted to revising with staff in what a good quality Learning Intention looks like and how data can inform the curriculum planning process. To this extent structures for allowing staff to access and review student data have been established this year. The chosen method of engagement for staff has been through peer observations and team meetings. Why are we participating? One of the key aims in a school improvement narrative is around investigating best practice which includes minimising the variation between classrooms. This is cited as one of the inhibiting factors

for schools. STUDENT LED CONFERENCES At Glenroy West Primary School we conduct our conferences as a way of communicating to parents and families, the learning experiences of our students in a meaningful and purposeful way. The students reflect and articulate their understandings through the sharing of their portfolio. Your child’s portfolio will include work samples and evidence of their learning experiences throughout the semester. We hope that you enjoyed the experience today. “Student led conferences involve the student and the parents. The students are responsible for leading the conference, and also taking responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents………….these samples have been selected with guidance and support from the teacher and could be from the student’s portfolio”. (Making the PYP happen: A Curriculum framework for international primary education, 2009). The objective of SLCS are:

1. To offer a meaningful dimension of assessment for learning as opposed to a summative grade

2. To give further meaning to the IB learner Profile- Reflection

3. To move the student to the centre of the report process

4. For students to use and demonstrate the Transdisciplinary skills that they are learning in a real context.

Written reports will be sent home on the last day of Term Two.

Have a great week ahead, Kind regards Pamela Streete Principal

Within the BASC (Before and After School Care) program this week we have been really interested in sport. The children have learnt some new games and techniques such as Poison ball where they run up and down the hall trying to dodge the evil powers of the Poison ball. Other children have participated in basketball drills and shooting techniques where they have practiced bouncing the ball and shooting a goal. We have sat together at meal times and enjoyed some yummy fairy bread and fruit, sharing stories and events from the day and fun ideas of things to do. The children have continued their passion for the arts, creating fancy envelopes, animals and cardboard creations. We have also finished out Art Wall so come in and see you child's artwork displayed. We have ready had a nice week getting to know each other and exploring our interests for further activities to come. Enjoy the week. From Nicki
