School Matters FROM THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE

You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.

Michelle Obama I would like to send out a positive message of hope with this circular. With credit to Michelle Obama: We are not going to solve the world’s Covid or other problems, but every one of us can have a positive influence on the future. Keep on spreading a message of hope and be the change you want to see in the College and in our beloved country. Currently there are many things to be positive about:

The days are getting longer and warmer.

The national, and especially Gauteng’s Covid-19 numbers, are decreasing.

The already great College attendance numbers are on the rise. Thank you for your support.

Our matrics will write their final exams during October and November as planned.

We will still have our spring break from 18 September to 6 October.

The grade 10s will have an Odyssey and the grade 12s a matric farewell – although they both may be slightly later than originally planned.

In Brad Binder, from Krugersdorp, South Africa has its first MotoGP world champion.

Under a club banner, more sport codes will start to practise soon.

You will receive a discount on your school fees for the last two months.

This month we can celebrate the women and girls of the College, our country and the world.

Most importantly: We have faith, hope and love. Soli Deo Gloria. We celebrated Women’s Day at school on Thursday and Friday and on Sunday joined the nation in honouring all women. Women’s Day commemorates the march of more than 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1956. We would be misled if we thought that women are treated equally in society today. The mere fact that violence against women continues to be a scourge in our country is evidence thereof. If any girl feels discriminated against on any grounds, please use one of the many College platforms available to report this.

ODYSSEY Due to the Covid regulations, the Odyssey scheduled for later this month, unfortunately has to be postponed. If the Covid situation improves and the regulations are eased, the tentative new date is 8 to 16 October. This date is subject to the Covid regulations, which will determine if we can continue as planned.

COVID-19: TEST ARRANGEMENTS We fully understand parents’ concerns and decision not to send your child to school due to the coronavirus, but please take note of the following test arrangements:

Learners, who do not write their tests at school, have to do so at home on the scheduled date and time. A video recording of the entire test session is also required by the school. (Detail arrangements are sent to learners involved.)

If a learner is unable to write on the scheduled date and time, the school must be provided with a medical certificate before an alternate assessment date can be arranged.

Grade heads must immediately be informed via e-mail of all learner absence.

Tests written at school, start promptly at 07:45. Learners who arrive late will not be granted extra time.

Your cooperation in this regard is highly appreciated.

GRADE 9 SUBJECT CHOICE

Sport RESUMPTION OF COACHING The good news is that certain sport codes have been given the green light to start training at club level. Amateur sport codes that already meet the Covid-19 protocol regulations are tennis, squash, cricket and swimming. From next week, Midstream College will allow tennis and squash to resume under strict conditions. As soon as the other sport codes have their protocols in place, we will allow them to phase in gradually. Coaches of the various sports will inform parents whose children are involved of the relevant conditions and protocols. LET’S COMMUNICATE
