Mr. David Lamers, Principal
March 2019 Dear Parent or Guardian: Woodland Intermediate students in Grades 5 and 6 will be participating in the Forward Exam this spring. This assessment includes literacy and math. At Woodland Intermediate School, this test-ing will occur between April 1 and April 5. Make up exams will be held the week of April 8th. Attached is an Informational Brochure for Families which contains additional information about the assessment including the purpose, what scores will be provided and how scores will be used. The results from the Forward exam will not have any impact on your child’s current grades. It is important that your son or daughter be in school during this time Students who are not in school during the scheduled testing days will be required to take a make-up exam prior to the close of the testing window. Please make every effort to avoid scheduling appointments for your child during the week of April 1—5. Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and do their best. The results of these tests help us make decisions on how we can continue to offer strong educational program-ming for our students. If you have any questions please contact your child’s homeroom teacher or me at any time. Sincerely,
Mr. Dave Lamers Principal
When does the Forward Exam take place?
The Forward Exam will be given in schools between March 18 and May 3, 2019. Schools are permitted to select their own testing dates within this window.
What type of scores will be provided?
The Forward Exam is a summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area. Each score will fall in one of four levels:
Advanced – Student demonstrates thorough understanding of and ability to apply the knowledge and skills for their grade level that are associated with college content-readiness.
Proficient – Student demonstrates adequate understanding of and ability to apply the knowledge and skills for their grade level that are associated with college content-readiness.
Basic – Student demonstrates partial understanding of and ability to apply the knowledge and skills for their grade level that are associated with college content-readiness.
Below Basic – Student demonstrates minimal understanding of and ability to apply the knowledge and skills for their grade level that are associated with college content-readiness.
Where can I find sample or practice test questions? An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with the tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform. It also gives students a chance to work with the different question types they will encounter on the exam. The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on test content. For more information contact the Office of Student Assessment at [email protected]

Wisconsin Forward Exam
Information for Families 2018-19
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
What is the Wisconsin Forward Exam? The Wisconsin Forward Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of each school year at: grades 3-8 in English language arts (ELA)
and mathematics, grades 4 and 8 in science and, grades 4, 8, and 10 in social studies.
The Forward Exam includes several question types: Multiple‐Choice (MC)
Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer.
Enhanced Selected Response (ESR) Question which may contain combinations of MC, short‐answer, and technology‐enhanced.
Evidence‐Based Selected Response (EBSR) Question which has two parts. The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A.
Text‐Dependent Analysis (TDA) Question used on the ELA test. The TDA is a text‐based analysis, based on a passage that read by the student during the assessment. Students must draw on basic writing skills while inferring and synthesizing information from the passage in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic essay response. Students have up to 5000 characters to formulate their response.
Technology‐Enhanced (TE) TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment. A wide variety of TE questions are present on the Forward Exam including:
Clock Input Angle Draw Short Input Bar Graph Number Line
Coordinate Graph Line Plot List Drag and Drop Drop‐Down List Pictograph using Drag and Paste Circle Graph Matching Highlighting Text
Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.
What does this mean for my child? The Forward Exam is a summative assessment that gauges your child’s achievement in the content areas tested compared to other students in the state. Along with local measures such as report cards, school-wide assessments, and other information about your child’s progress in school, the results from the Forward Exam provide insight into how well your child is doing on a broad measure of achievement.
What are the test times? The estimated time for test administration in each grade is approximately: 2 hours and 20 minutes for ELA, 1 hour and 45 minutes for Mathematics, 1 hour and 40 minutes for Science, and 1 hour and 30 minutes for Social Studies. These are estimated times, for the purpose of scheduling, as the Forward Exam is not a timed test.
21 st Annual Fox Valley Junior Math League Meet in Kimberly
130 Mathletes, grades 5-8, from Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, and Kimberly met at JR Gerritts Middle School for the final math meet of the 2018-2019 season. The snow and ice that had canceled the Neenah meet this year, sadly kept the Greenville students back home on February 25. As always, the excitement and friendly competition rivaled the Olympics. Pizza and snacks added to the fun. A great big THANK YOU goes to all the people who made this event possible: Parents who scored the tests, prepared the food, set-up the commons, teachers who brought their students to the meet and supervised them throughout the afternoon, students, who gave their little grey cells an extreme workout, janitorial staff who cleaned up the mess, Mrs. King, who emceed every one of the 21 meets, and Mrs. Balistreri who founded the Math League and organizes these events.

FAMILY RESOURCE INFORMATION/
OPPORTUNITIES TO DONATE
You may or may not be aware that the Kimberly Area School
District has two clothes closets that are located in two of our
schools. One of the clothes closets is at Mapleview
Intermediate (920-788-7910) and the other is at Westside
Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are
in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact
Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is
frequently being offered ways to support our families if they
should fall upon economic hardship. Please reach out to your
child’s teacher or school counselor if you are in need of any
assistance throughout the year.
When to Keep Your Child Home
Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to
recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your
child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.
The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should
be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable
disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.
SORE THROAT
An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.
If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.
If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.
A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.
Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious.
