It had been a gentle winter season in Beulah Valley compared to most winters of recent years The snowfall though regular had not been heavy and the country roads were easily traversed by means of horse driven sleighs Centered within the valley like a rare and beautiful jewel was the town of Breslin Though small Breslin

had every shop and business necessary to provide a comfortable living for its citizens Thanksgiving IHoliday had come and gone and Christmas was just right around the corner The Breslin residence were in a very festive mood

On the western fringes of the town was a lake and on the opposite side of that lake was a quaint old country church nestled among snow enshrouded fern trees The parson of the church was

iappropriately an elderly man of the cloth His name was Reverend Thompson and he was a wise patient and caring man very sober of judgment and down to earth His parishioners lovingly called him Rev

Rev lived in a modest parish which was actually an extension to the church sanctuary but he didnt live alone Within a small hole in the baseboard lining of his small study lived a mouse He called the mouse Cheeseball because he always made sure to supply the tiny creature with a little ball of cheese each day

On Christmas Eve Rev received a most unlikely visitor a rather well-groomed cat The creature announced himself at Reverend Thompsons study door with loud persistent meowing

Upon spying the cat when he opened the door the Rev exclaimed Well how on earth did you get inside the church building At that point the meowing ceased and the cat sauntered into the study CheesebalL who was on the Revs desk stood up on his rear haunches and examined the cat carefully Im sorry said the Rev to the cat But Ive little to offer you - though I believe I have some cream on hand

That will do very nicely thank you the cat replied Reverend Thompson hesitated a brief moment appraising the cat and then went to his cooled storage room to get the cream Pouring some into

a saucer he set it down before the cat After the cat lapped up the cream he jumped up on the I desk nodded his greeting to the wary mouse and turned to the Rev A blizzard is coming so you better prepare the people in the town said the cat I see said ~he Rev Youre sure of this It will arrive in three days the cat assured him Very welL said the Rev Ill do what I can and thank you so much

Without further ado the cat nodded once more to the mouse and jumped off the desk to disappear back into the sanctuary from whence he came The Rev thoroughly searched between ~he pews but try as he might never saw the cat again

Returning to his study Rev sat at his desk to consider what must be done Huh Cheeseball softly interrupted the Revs thoughts A cat that talks Hush said the Rev to the mouse Don t say a word about this to anyone To be sure I wont squeaked the mouse plaintively After aiL people would think Im crazy and indeed the mouse never spoke another word And that my friends is where we got our expression Quiet as a church mouse
