School Information

Gartocharn Primary School, Ross Loan, Gartocharn G83 8NE Tel : 01389 830342 Fax : 01389 830718 Email : [email protected] Head Teacher John McDonald

Gartocharn Primary is situated on the edge of the village of Gartocharn just under a mile from the southern shore of Loch Lomond. The present building was constructed in 1968 and has four classrooms arranged on two levels. There is disabled access to the lower level in which is also situated a disabled toilet. The relatively large gymnasium also serves as a school hall, dining room and general purpose room as the occasion and activity warrant. The school kitchen, in which all meals are cooked, is attached to the dining area. There are two asphalted playgrounds, one at the front of the school and one at the rear. In addition there is the John Young Community Pitch. This is a 3G All Weather pitch, which is used by the children for P.E. , extra-curricular clubs, during morning interval and at lunch times. For safety reasons pupils do not have access to the car park unless under direct supervision of the member of school staff who is supervising traffic arrangements. Gartocharn Primary is a non denominational school and can accommodate children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. At present, we have 75 children on the school roll, but can cater for 100 children. Parents should note that the working capacity of the school may vary dependent upon the number of pupils at each stage and the way in which classes are organised. We consider ourselves to be an open school in that we aim to be available for Parents/Carers and are able to meet requests for appointments and meeting times. We try hard to do so even at very short notice and when this is not possible we make arrangements to meet with parents as soon as possible. Teachers may be available to speak to parents at the end of the school day when all children have safely been placed in their parent or guardians care.

The names, addresses and telephone numbers of two people who live nearby and with whom contact may be made in an emergency.

The name and telephone number of your child's family doctor

Details of any medical conditions or dietary requirements

Your child may have already visited the school for a number of transition visits if they have attended Gartocharn Early Education and Child Care Centre (GEEC). In addition to this, all P1 new entrants and their parents are invited to the school to visit on a number of occasions during the summer term. A range of planned learning sessions in school will take place with their prospective teacher. School staff will also make visits to GEEC To enrol a child of any age during the term, please contact the head teacher. If you, as a prospective parent, wish to visit the school to meet with Mr. McDonald and have a look round the school, you will be made most welcome. Please telephone to arrange a suitable time.

POLICIES FOR PARENTS/CARERS The local education authority has produced policies for parents which provide information for new parents at school. Copies are available from the school or can be accessed from the council website. In Gartocharn Primary we have produced policies for different aspects of school life. These are available from the school and are available on request.

School Improvement and achievement

For the year 2014 / 15 Gartocharn has 5 priorities for school improvement that we are all working hard to achieve. These are:

Priority 1 : Introduction of French from P1 to P7 As part of a national project known as L1+2 children have been learning French from P1 to P7. French is taught as part of the everyday curriculum and not as a separate lesson. This means that children might do things like the register, greetings, lunches and instructions in French. In a couple of years time a second language will be introduced from P5 upwards.

Priority 2: Science We are developing our approaches to teaching science throughout the school. We are investing in new science resources. Staff are attending a wide range of excellent training events to continue to improve their confidence in teaching science.

Priority 3: Developing the Curriculum We have developed a clear rationale for the curriculum that the children experience here in Gartocharn. As well as creating a challenging, engaging and progressive curriculum we have a clear focus on the qualities and potential that a small rural school offers us. This has allowed us to develop a 2 year rolling programme where the children engage in a wide range of learning experiences that are tailored to Gartocharn. One of the unique advantages to Gartocharn Primary School is its easy access to the outdoors. We are developing an outdoor learning area in the grounds of the school where the children will regularly go to learn about a whole range of areas across the curriculum from bug hunts to looking after our environment. The school is now fully equipped with waterproof dungarees and jackets. We ask children to bring in their own wellies that stay in the school.

12

We are also developing children’s skills for learning, life and work. These can be best explained by the diagram below:

We are developing new Inter Disciplinary Topics which enable children to develop all these skills as well as acquiring knowledge. We are confident that we are working towards an excellent curriculum that will prepare the children in Gartocharn for life in the 21st Century.

13

Priority 4 : Raising Attainment

Gartocharn is a very high attaining school. However, we are always working hard to continually improve this. This year we are working on raising attainment through:

Introducing Reading Circles. A proven approach to increasing children’s engagement and understanding of their reading.

Introduction of Rubric Assessment Approach. This is an approach to assessment that fully involves the children in understanding how to improve their work.

Thorough tracking and monitoring of children’s progress

Programmes in place to support learning for those who are finding learning challenging

Priority 5: Self Evaluation As a school we are developing our approaches to self evaluation to ensure continuous reflection and improvement. As part of this we are introducing school councils. The 6 school councils ( Sport Superstars, Healthy Heroes, Globe Trotters, Press Gang, Eco Warriors and the Garden Gang ) will be evaluating their areas of the school and developing an action plan to ensure continuous improvement in these areas.

OUR CURRICULUM At the heart of a Curriculum for Excellence lies the aspiration that all children should develop their capacities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. West Dunbartonshire Council’s priority for Curriculum for Excellence is to ensure effective teaching and learning. The Curriculum for Excellence challenges us to look at innovative and exciting ways to deliver the curriculum to our children. While there are specific programmes for each area of the curriculum much of it can now be delivered through cross-cutting themes and interdisciplinary studies and projects. Curriculum for Excellence enables professionals to teach in a creative way, to work together, plan together and to create shared learning experiences. It balances the importance of knowledge and skills. It ensures that pupils have opportunities for choice and that they are active participants in their own learning. There will be new ways of assessing progress and ensuring children achieve their potential and there will be new qualifications for literacy and numeracy from 2012/2013

The Eight Curriculum areas are: Expressive Arts – including art and design, dance, drama and music Health and Wellbeing – mental, emotional , social and physical wellbeing, PE, food and health, substance misuse and relationships, sexual health and parenthood Languages – listening and talking, reading and writing in literacy and English and modern languages, plus classical languages and literacy and Gaidhlig/Gaelic learners (where available) Mathematics – including analyzing information, solving problems and assessing risk Religious and Moral Education (denominational and non-denominational) learning about Christianity, other world religions, and developing values and beliefs Sciences – understanding important scientific concepts across planet Earth, forces, electricity and waves, biological systems, materials and topical science Social Studies – understanding people, place and society in the past and present including history, geography, modern studies and business education Technologies – including computing science, food, textiles, craft, design, engineering, graphics and applied technologies Additional important themes across the curriculum are sustainability, creativity, enterprise and citizenship.

CURRICULUM AREAS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERACY

Literacy offers children an essential passport to learning across the curriculum and prepares children to take a full and active role in society and work. Learning through language develops children’s ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Children develop skills in listening, talking, reading & writing which are all essential for learning, work and life. In Gartocharn Primary we have a progressive literacy approach that starts from the basics of learning to read and write right the way through to high level analysis of texts. Learning experiences in literacy are planned ensuring that pupils work individually, paired or in cooperative groups. Children are encouraged to engage in a variety of functional and personal writing experiences. Writing is usually linked to the theme and pupils are knowledgeable of their targets in writing. They are taught from an early age how to rigorously self and peer assess their work identifying their next steps along with the teacher. In the early stages of the school reading is taught by a combination of the "Look and Say" method and phonics. The main text in use is Oxford Reading Tree. Jolly Phonics is used at stages P1, P2 and P3. From about P3 onwards reading is developed using a variety of resources from Literacy World, Novel Studies or Reading Circles using current popular children’s novels. The School acknowledges the vital part played by you in your child's learning to read and offers you opportunities to take part in parent workshops. We run an annual Book Fair to allow parents' and children to purchase books. From 2014/15 children will be learning French from P1 to P7. This will be taught as part of the everyday routines in the classroom. In a couple of years time the school will be introducing an additional language from P5 to P7.

16

MATHEMATICS & NUMERACY

Through the study of mathematics children develop essential numeracy and mathematical skills which they can apply in different contexts and in the world of work. Mathematics is a key element in engineering, science, technology and business. We use Scottish Heinemann Maths and TeeJay as our core maths schemes for P1-7 along with new Active Maths Games. However other resources and approaches are used depending on the individual needs of each child. We try to ensue that maths lessons have an appropriate balance of oral maths, practical/active experiences; consolidation and practice. Increasing emphasis is being placed on interactive and active learning. Some of the mathematics curriculum is delivered through our interdisciplinary learning themes and some is developed though our core programme. We ensure there is progression of skills through planning learning experiences and assessments.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

We are a health promoting school and encourage children to develop and apply their knowledge to make informed decisions and choices in order to improve their physical, emotional and social wellbeing and pursue healthy lifestyles. Each term we have a specific health focus across all stages eg personal safety; anti-bullying; drugs awareness and physical fitness. These are often linked to any particular event or issue going on in the wider world. There are opportunities for pupils to develop a sense of responsibility towards health promotion and a commitment to looking after their own health. In interdisciplinary themes each term health & wellbeing is always given importance and learners experiences are planned carefully. Children have two hours of PE/fitness per week with their class teacher. Where appropriate additional activities take place matched to themes such as Commonwealth and Olympic Games etc. There are programmes of work covering health, personal & social development and physical education which are used to plan health focus days and ensure a suitable breadth of study is undertaken across the stages. Teachers also plan to ensure that there is a progression of skills developed as well as a good variety and range of activities or learning experiences. Children at particular stages in the school have also benefited from working with Sports Development Officers in a range of sports such as: P1 Games P2/3 Football, P4/5 Rugby, Tennis and Hockey, P6/7 Sportshall Athletics and Football and Swimming.

17

SOCIAL STUDIES Engaging in social studies allows children to develop an understanding of their world by learning about other people, their values and cultures, in different times, places and circumstances and how their environment has been shaped. (People in place, people in the past and people in society). Children learn about human achievements, conflicts and environmental issues, both in a local and global context. In Gartocharn Primary we engaged in Social Studies within our inter-disciplinary themes. Our Inter Disciplinary Themes or Topics are carefully planned throughout the school so that there is a clear pathway through the school and the children engage in a wide range of experiences.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS Expressive arts include art & design, drama, dance & music. Through the expressive arts curriculum children are given a variety of opportunities to enjoy creative and imaginative activities and to express themselves in different ways. Expressive arts can also be a forum for children to bring enjoyment and entertainment to others through shows, concerts and assemblies. Throughout the year children in Gartocharn are given opportunities to perform before their peers and parents. This session P4/5 benefited from a West Dunbartonshire music programme to develop their skills in Rhythm. Pupils from P5 - P7 had the opportunity to access violin tuition weekly. The children enjoy visits from Theatre groups.

SCIENCES Sciences include study in biological, chemical, physical and environmental contexts. Learning through science enables children to investigate their environment, develop an understanding of scientific contexts and achievements as well as recognise the impact science makes on our lives. Science is either taught through our interdisciplinary themes such as “ The Body “ in P4/5 or “The Owl that was afraid of the Dark” in P1/2 or it is taught as a discreet unit such as “ Materials” in P6/7. Visits to the Science Centre are used to enhance the learning. Increasingly we will be using our Outdoor Learning area for Science Field Work.

TECHNOLOGIES The use of ICT is an integral part of education. All classes have a range of software covering many of the curricular areas and are used to enhance teaching and learning. Classes have an interactive whiteboard fitted which can be used throughout the day and across the curriculum. To participate fully in modern society children need to be skilled and knowledgeable users of technology as well as be able to assess their impact in society. Pupils use their ICT skills by participating in research across the curriculum, information handling and creating documents such as the School Newspaper, tickets, programmes etc. The school is now has Wifi installed in all areas of the school. We are going to be involved in a pilot project looking at the use of Tablets and Chrome Books in the school. We now have an ICT club in the school which is responsible for updating the class pages on the school website.

19

RME & RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Religious and Moral Education is an important area of the curriculum which includes learning about Christianity as well as other world religions. We seek to help our pupils to recognise that religion is an important expression of human experience and to provide opportunities for pupils to consider and respond to values, beliefs and practices of religious traditions both within our community and beyond. Whole school assemblies are held weekly generally led by Mr McDonald. All assemblies are an important aspect of school life providing opportunities for us to come together and celebrate personal achievements. They also provide an opportunity to celebrate and recognise major religious festivals such as Christmas, Easter, Eid or Hanukah. We also discuss moral issues such as Remembrance Day. We take account of and respect the different beliefs of pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from classes in Religion Education and from Religious observance. Please inform Mr McDonald if you wish to exercise this right. He will then make appropriate arrangements for any pupils concerned. Parents from ethnic minority religious communities may request that their children be permitted to be absent from school in order to celebrate recognised religious events. Only written requests detailing the proposed arrangements will be considered. Appropriate requests will be granted on not more than three occasions in any one school session and the pupil noted as an authorised absentee in the register.

ASSESSMENT

Continual assessment of the curriculum is carried out by the head teacher and staff. Each teacher is constantly monitoring and assessing the progress of the pupils. This is done through: a) observation b) oral feedback c) written feedback d) class progress records e) standardised tests A key feature of assessment is formative assessment. Formative assessment is the teacher and child working together to support learning. It is about teachers giving effective feedback to pupils and the active involvement of children in their learning. Oral progress reports are given to each parent at the parent-teacher interviews. However any parent who has a concern, complaint or wishes to discuss their child’s progress is invited to arrange an appointment at the school or to telephone the Head Teacher anytime.

TRACKING

Self evaluation is a key feature in teaching and learning. Both staff and children engage in self and peer evaluations to continually inform and improve standards across the school. Pupil performance is tracked regularly by the class teacher and head teacher. Pupils are encouraged to have a knowledge of the level that they are working on. Class teachers and the head teacher keep records of pupil progress within levels. Pupils talk about their learning journey and have knowledge of their personal targets.

REPORTING

There are two official parent/carer evenings in Gartocharn and an annual written report. Curriculum for Excellence is organised into different levels and your child’s report will tell you about their progress in the levels throughout the year. The written report will include information and teacher comments about : (a) the breadth of learning your child has experienced within curricular areas (b) the level of challenge planned for your child to ensure he/she is achieving his/her full potential and being supported appropriately (c) how well your child can apply learning in new and unfamiliar contexts

Level Stage

Early The pre-school years and P1 or later for some

First To the end of P4, but earlier or later for some

Second To the end of P7, but earlier for some

Third & Fourth S1 to S3, but earlier for some. The fourth level broadly equates to Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Level 4. The fourth level experiences and outcomes are intended to provide possibilities for choice and young people’s programmes will not include all of the fourth level outcomes.

Senior Phase S4—S6 and college or other means of study

Progress within a curriculum level will be described as developing, consolidating or secure.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND SOCIAL JUSTICE All members of the School Community are treated equally and given equal opportunity to access teaching and learning to each person’s potential. All staff have a responsibility to ensure the council’s Equal Opportunities Policy is adhered to.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS

Schools are required by law to ensure they are providing for children and young people who require additional help with their learning. The Additional Support for Learning Act (ASL) 2009 requires that from 14 November 2010 schools improve on how we communicate with parents/carers on all aspects of the ASL Act. Detailed information on the changes resulting from the legislation is available to all parents and recent publications on supporting learning needs are available in the school foyer.

Supporting learners requiring additional support Staff monitor the progress of children requiring support and provide learning materials suitable to their level of development. All schools in West Dunbartonshire have a staged intervention process for identifying pupils with support needs. Some pupils have support plans to help them with particular aspects of their learning. Parents will always be informed about this and will be invited to discuss support needs and plans with the head teacher at key times during the year. Any parent/carer concerned about their child’s learning is welcome to visit the school to discuss their concerns. Information is available about additional support on the council website and is also available in the school reception area. Schools also have the support of Psychological Services. The role of the educational psychologist is to lend support by interviewing, testing and suggesting suitable work and materials for children whose learning or behaviour is causing concern. Parents will always be consulted if a referral to the psychologist is being considered. We aim to ensure that the learning experiences for all our pupils are appropriate. Our approach to embrace the national policy of Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC) is to ensue that we work effectively, and communicate successfully with parents and different agencies to ensure maximum benefits for pupils. Information can be obtained on all aspects of additional support needs from West Dunbartonshire Council's website at http://www.wdcweb.info/education-and-learning/additional-support-needs/

PUPIL SUPPORT STRUCTURE

All staff in the school are required to be aware of child protection issues and are provided with regular information on child protection policy and procedures. The school maintains close working relationships with all other relevant agencies to ensure appropriate information is shared and that professionals from various agencies work collaboratively for the wellbeing of the children and young people. All staff have a responsibility to report concerns regarding the welfare or safety of a child or young person to the head teacher. If the head teacher is of the view that there may be grounds for concern they will immediately contact the duty senior social worker and advise them of the circumstances. In Gartocharn we aim to get it right for every child (GIRFEC). Our policy is to support pupils with all aspects of their learning and to ensure that parents and pupils access support from different agencies out with education such as health, social work and the wider community groups associated with supporting vulnerable pupils. We try to ensure that our pupils are safe, healthy, achieving, attaining, nurtured, included and fulfilling their potential. We work in partnership with parents and carers and ensure that our pupils have an identified person that they can speak to, relate to and be supported by. We try to remove barriers to learning and at all times consider how we can best include and support individual pupils so that they continue to achieve.

ANTI-BULLYING POLICY In Gartocharn we aspire to keep pupils feeling happy and safe at school. We aim to cooperate, help and support each other. Aims of our anti-bullying policy

That all staff, pupils and parents understand what bullying is and know exactly what action to take if an incident of bullying takes place in school.

That all staff, pupils and parents know that bullying will not be tolerated in any form in Gartocharn Primary School

That pupils and parents know they are encouraged to speak up about incidents of bullying and not permit bullying to exist through secrecy and silence.

That all staff, pupils and parents know that any incidents of bullying will be dealt with quickly and effectively when reported.

That our anti-bullying policy is recognised as part of a wider policy on ethos which encompasses promoting positive behaviour, equal opportunities , child protection, promoting a healthy school and anti-racism.

That our anti-bullying ethos can be highlighted in a number of curricular areas e.g. R.E., PSD, Drama, Art, Language

That the bully him/herself knows that he/she will be accountable for his/her behaviour. What is Bullying? Bullying can take may forms. In all forms it constitutes an abuse of power with the intention of hurting the victim and inflicts various degrees of misery on the victim. Neither bullies nor victims can be stereotyped. Though most victims are children who are vulnerable and most bullies have either been bullied themselves or have other emotional problems. Forms of Bullying Verbal: name calling, taunting, sarcasm, making nasty comments, making inappropriate personal comments about a child or his/her family on more that a one-off basis. This is the most common form of bullying.

Physical: punching, kicking, pushing, pinching, spitting or using any other form of violence. A spontaneous fight over a dispute or children playing together in a rough way does not constitute bullying.

Social: isolating or excluding a child from games or play on a regular basis

Material: taking possessions, dinner monies, sweets through extortion

Emotional: threatening a child, by using threatening gestures or by generally belittling a child on a regular basis Procedures to Deal Effectively with Bullying

Regular talks and updates on bullying and its effects at weekly school assemblies

Focus on bullying and its effects as integral part of PSD

The display of anti-bullying posters within the school

HOMEWORK

Children will be encouraged to extend the skills taught in school through further practice and research at home. The time spent on this should vary according to the age and development of the child. Homework might be set as follows: - phonics, spelling , wordlists; - practice in mathematical processes; - reading of novels/short stories; - practice in language conventions; - home reading book; - research/information collection; - practice in musical activities; - voluntary work, i.e. writing stories, poems, sketching, etc. As homework is for the benefit of your child you are asked to cooperate by seeing that the work is completed and the homework signed. Concerns about homework should be communicated to the head teacher and an appointment with the class teacher will be organised.

SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LINKS

In Gartocharn Primary School we strive to develop our links with parents. We view the education of pupils as a real partnership between school and the home. Each session you are offered two opportunities to meet with your child's teacher to discuss progress. At least one Open Day is held when you are invited into school to visit your child in his/her classroom to observe the type of work and activities being undertaken. Pupils have the opportunity on this occasion of showing and talking to you about their learning. Each class now has a “Class Page / Blog” on the school website where parents are kept up to date with all aspects of school life. Articles on school life also appear in the local newspaper the The Gartorag. Information leaflets on areas on the curriculum or on specific initiatives are issued as appropriate. From time to time you are invited to school to learn about various aspects of the school curriculum. Meetings may be held for specific class groups. For example reading meetings for P1 parents and for P3 parents are held annually along with meetings or workshops to demonstrate and explain aspects of Mathematics. We run an annual meeting for P6 parents to inform and discuss the school Sexual Health Programme. Other aspects of the curriculum on a whole school basis may be covered at such meetings to inform you about what is done in school so that you may gain greater insight into your child's education. We also set out to describe ways in which you can support your child, consistent with school practice. We also set out to seek and take account of the views of parents in the school's annual Planning for Improvement Cycle. Mr McDonald is always pleased to discuss any matter of concern on an individual basis with you should the need arise. Please telephone should you wish to make an appointment. We try to ensure that we develop our practices as a school community. Pupils have opportunities to join different school councils and are encouraged to develop leadership skills and voice their opinions, leading to change and new initiatives. The school plays an important role in the community. The school premises may be let for community purposes. Applications for school lets should be made to: The Letting Section Educational Services Department, West Dunbartonshire Council Garshake Road Dumbarton G82 3PU

The premises are regularly let for community purposes such as junior and senior badminton clubs. Links are established with village organisations and we attempt to foster and develop these links whenever appropriate, through joint activities and projects.

ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL

Section 30 of the 1980 Education Act lays a duty on every parent of a child of ‘school age’ to ensure that their child attends school regularly.

Parents are asked to inform the school by letter or telephone if their child is likely to be absent for some time, and to give the child a note on his or her return to school confirming the reason for absence. The Policies for Parents document “Achievement Through Attendance”, available to all parents from their children’s school, outlines the importance of good attendance. If your child does not arrive at school by 9.30am in the morning and you have not contacted the school, you will receive a phone call to yourself or next point of contact. The reason for this is to ensure Pupil welfare. Please note that parents must provide the school with up to date contact information. The Scottish Government has now issued guidance to all local authorities indicating that family holidays taken during term time should be categorised as unauthorised absence (curricular no. 5/03). Clearly with no explanation from the parent the absence is unauthorised. Only in very exceptional circumstances will it be possible for the head teacher, with the approval of the local authority, to authorise a family holiday during term time. No child is allowed to leave school during school hours without the permission of the head teacher. Therefore, if it is essential for a child to leave class, for example for doctor, hospital or dental appointment, an explanatory letter or the appropriate card should be sent in and the child collected from school. In the interests of safety no child will be allowed to leave the school unaccompanied to keep an appointment or to meet a parent. The parent or guardian must come to the school for the child. No child will be allowed to be sent home in a taxi within the school day for any reason. The school will monitor children’s absences. We will telephone parents to ask for an explanation of absence and when necessary i.e. when absences are below an acceptable level without reasonable explanation, will employ steps outlined in the Attendance Policy. Excess absence means that the child/family will be referred to the local education authority Attendance Review Committee.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Gartocharn has an excellent range of Extra Curricular activities available for all ages in the school. We have almost 100% of children attending an extra curricular club at some point throughout the year. Already this year we have had the following clubs running: Badminton Football Orienteering Mini Movers Lunch time games ICT Many of our clubs are organised and supported by our Active Schools Coordinator Craig Thomson. We also have a number of parents who help with the running of clubs. If you would like to help run a club in the school then please get in touch with Mr McDonald. Some of our senior pupils have engaged in charity fundraising activities using their own initiative, creativity and skills. They have then consulted with each other on how best to utilise funds raised. All of our children continue to develop our school grounds and are worked very hard towards achieving our second Green Flag for eco schools. This work has been greatly supported by our parents. All classes will have the opportunity to take part in a number of visits and outings related to themed learning. Some of these visits will be within local or wider community. Visits to the school by theatre groups will be organised. The children will have the opportunity to participate in a school show every other year.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE

In our school the relationship between the pupils and the staff is similar to that between his/her own parent/guardian. As in the home, self discipline and self control are emphasised throughout the school. We strive to lead the children to an understanding of social interaction, co-operation and resolution of conflict. We employ solution oriented and restorative approaches after disagreements. We try hard to be inclusive in our approach, ensuring that pupils are treated fairly. Supervision in the morning commences at 8.40am, fifteen minutes before the start of school. An adult presence is provided in playgrounds at break times in terms of the Schools (Safety and Supervision of Pupils) (Scotland) Regulations, 1990. Through our policy for School Discipline we aim:

To create a learning environment in which all people display mutual respect and consideration towards each other.

To promote positive behaviour

That all pupils will aspire to a high degree of self discipline in relations with other people, both pupils and adults and in their relations with their physical environment

To make everyone who works and learns in our school feel valued The Discipline Policy of Gartocharn School is based on pupils learning and following five basic school and classroom rules. These are:

Follow all instructions straight away

Keep hands, feet, objects and unkind words to yourself

Listen to the person who is meant to be talking

Show respect to everyone at all times

Take care of belongings, your own, other peoples and the schools. High standards are set and expected of all. Senior pupils are encouraged to set a positive example to younger pupils at all times. We operate a system of promoting Positive Behaviour whereby good conduct is recognised, rewarded and celebrated. We currently adopt Assertive Discipline approaches in our school. A parent information leaflet is available and issued to parents of all new pupils. We believe that through good home-school relationships good discipline can be established and maintained. Pupils are encouraged to show respect for self and others. Staff model good relationships and positive interactions with others. Pupils are treated fairly; with respect and pupils are encouraged to treat adults and others with respect. Staff seek and utilise different approaches to encourage pupils to behave positively, show high levels of motivation and a positive work ethic.

CLOTHING AND UNIFORM Pupils attending schools within West Dunbartonshire Council are strongly encouraged to wear a school uniform. Our contact with parents in recent years has also made us aware that the vast majority are in favour of uniform. The wearing of school uniform helps promote the identity of the school in the local community and helps create an ethos of sharing and pride in the school. West Dunbartonshire Council supports the wearing of school uniform in all of its schools because it:

improves school security by making it easier to identify intruders

builds a sense of identity and belonging to the school

gives pupils an equality of appearance thereby discouraging competition

is cheaper to buy than other clothing which pupils may wish to wear

encourages school discipline and a work ethic amongst pupils The forms of dress which are unacceptable in school are items of clothing which:

potentially encourage faction (such as football colours)

could cause offence (such as anti-religious or political symbolism)

could cause health and safety difficulties, such as loose fitting clothing, sportswear made of flammable material, and body piercings/jewellery for PE and sport

could cause damage to flooring

carry advertising, particularly for alcohol or tobacco

could be used to inflict damage on other pupils or be used by others to do so

are valuable or expensive items of clothing or jewellery which present a security issue for the school

Some pupils may be eligible for a clothing grant. Parents can ask at the school office or they can access information on the council website. Appendix 1 of our handbook has a copy of the application form for your information. The agreed school uniform for Gartocharn is: BOYS GIRLS

Grey trousers Grey skirt/pinafore white shirt white shirt School tie School tie red jersey red jersey/cardigan Red sweatshirts, white polo shirt, reversible rain jackets and a range of items bearing the school badge can be purchased via order forms available from school office. The school will prepare a group order at the end of term in June and January/February.

We ask that all items of uniform be clearly marked/labelled with your child’s name and class to ensure that is does not get lost.

SCHOOL MEALS

The school offers a selection of healthy school meals and we operate a pre-ordering system for lunch. Pupils choose what they would like to eat from the menu each morning and every effort is made to ensure that their choice is given at lunchtime. Payment for school meals is made weekly on a Monday. Payment may be made by cheque, made out to West Dunbartonshire Council. The Menus for our school meals are available on the West Dunbartonshire Council Website. Or from the school office. Special diets are available and parents are asked to let us know if their child requires a special diet for medical reasons. Provision is made in the lunch hall for children who bring their own home prepared packed lunch. Some children may be entitled to a free school meal and parents can ask at the school office or they can access the information on the council website www.west-dunbarton.go.uk/education-and-learning/schools. Appendix 1 of our handbook has a copy of the application form for information. Only those children whose parents are receiving income support will be entitled to free milk with their lunch. Milk is now provided free of charge to all pupils immediately following the morning interval. We ask parents to encourage children to drink their milk on a daily basis. At the present time all pupils stay in school for lunch. Primary one pupils are encouraged to stay for lunch from their first day at school.

TRANSPORT

West Dunbartonshire Council has a policy of providing free transport to all primary pupils who live more than one mile from their zoned local school by the recognised shortest safe walking route. Application forms and information on transport are available on the council website and must be submitted by the end of February each year to enable the appropriate arrangements to be made. Where free transport is provided it may be necessary for pupils to walk a certain distance to the vehicle pick up point. It is the parents responsibility to ensure their child arrives at the pick-up point in time. It is also the parents responsibility to ensure the child behaves in a safe and acceptable manner whilst boarding, travelling in, and alighting from the vehicle. Misbehaviour could result in your child losing the right to receiving free transport. Parents should ensure that their child knows what to do in the event of transport not arriving at the pick up point, if not accompanied by an adult. Transport may be cancelled, for example, due to adverse weather conditions. The education Authority does not provide transport for those pupils in receipt of a placing request. In the case of under age placing requests if the child is offered a place in his or her catchment area school, transport will be provided in accordance with council policy. Those of our pupils who are receipt of free school transport are conveyed to and from school by bus. Occasionally a bus may break down and fail to arrive at the school. In such cases Mr McDonald may have to telephone parents to ask for assistance. If there should be a breakdown on the journey from school, parents will be notified by Mr McDonald as soon as circumstances are known. Parents are asked always to inform the school on any occasion an alteration is made to a child's travelling arrangements. Parents of pupils travelling on the school buses are asked regularly to impress upon their children the necessity of, and reason for, their maintaining very good behaviour whilst on board. Drivers must not be distracted for obvious reasons of safety. The Pupils' Safe Travel Conduct Code will be issued regularly throughout each school session.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO

In line with Council Policy no photography of individuals is permitted on council premises where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy without their consent or in the case of children under 12 years, the consent of their parents/guardians. Parents/guardians will be asked to give written permission on an annual basis for their child to be photographed or videoed for specific purposes related to the life and work of the school and the education service.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH CARE

West Dunbartonshire Council has strict guidelines and policy on administration of medicines. Consent/information must be given if medicine is to be administered in school. In our school we have a member of staff who is qualified to administer first aid to assist with minor injuries and accidents. Parents are asked to inform the school of any medical requirements of their child. While the school provides minor first aid treatment, parents should provide the school with an emergency contact so that children can be taken home if illness occurs. The school should be notified immediately if the emergency contact changes.

Minor accidents will be dealt with in school by staff members. In the event of a serious accident the child will be taken directly to Vale of Leven Hospital or Royal Alexandria Hospital, Paisley. Parents will be notified immediately. Minor injuries will be noted in our accident log book and a note of this will be given to the child to take home. In the event of more serious injuries and all head injuries, parents will be contacted by telephone. The school nurse is involved with all aspects of health screening and health education. Hearing, vision and dental checks are also carried out throughout the year. Primaries 1 and 2 take part in a tooth-brushing project. Pupils in P1– P4 engage in the fluoride varnish project. The school nurse is also available to help, advise and guide parents/carers with individual concerns over pupils health and wellbeing. Please contact the head teacher if you would like to have an appointment with the school nurse.

INFORMATION IN EMERGENCIES We make every effort to maintain a full educational service, but on some occasions circumstances arise which lead to disruption. Schools may be affected by, for example, severe weather, temporary interruption of transport, power failures or difficulties of fuel supply. In such cases we shall do all we can to let you know about the details of closure or re-opening. We shall keep you in touch by using letters, notices in local shops and community centres, announcements in local churches and announcements in the press and on local radio. You will also be able to access up to date information from the West Dunbartonshire Council website. This can be located at www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk It is normal practice within West Dunbartonshire Council to operate a helpline when emergencies arise. Details will be made available when an occasion arises. Please note that it is the parents responsibility to check with the bus company, who holds the contract, as to whether the service is running or not. At present it is McColls and current information can be found on their website www.mccolls.org or phone 01389 754321.

Local Learning Communities

All educational establishments within West Dunbartonshire Council are members of a Local Learning Community (LLC). These LLC’s are made up of one secondary school and its associated primary schools and include a number of Early Education and Childcare Centres and Partnership Nurseries. Gartocharn Primary School is a member of the Vale of Leven Academy Local Learning Community ( VOLA). The five Learning Communities in West Dunbartonshire have been established as part of West Dunbartonshire’s educational improvement strategy. This strategy has a clear focus to raise educational aspirations, achievement and attainment of all pupils while improving the skills and knowledge of all staff involved in the education of children and young people. Mr McDonald represents Gartocharn primary school on the Vale of Leven Academy LLC; however other members of staff may attend meetings in support of improvement work. The VOLA LLC is led by Matthew Boyle Educational Services Manager who is assisted by the school’s Quality Improvement Officer Julie McGrogan. Updates on the work of the LLC’s will be made available through parent council meetings and through Standards and Quality reporting.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Co-operation between the home and the school is essential for the wellbeing of the child. Parents are very welcome in school to discuss any aspect of their child’s development or progress. It is advisable to telephone first to make an appointment. There are various opportunities throughout the year when parents can discuss their child’s progress with the class teacher and view children’s work. Information on these and other activities is communicated to parents in newsletters or by a note taken home by the children. Parents' Evenings tend to be in November and May. Alternative arrangements can be made for parents who are not available to attend on the agreed parent information evening. Parental opinion or comments may be sought and we welcome responses from parents. Please try to respond so that your feedback can be part of any changes introduced. Additional curriculum meetings may be held throughout the year. Parents are welcome to help with a variety of activities. Let us know if you can help in this way. Throughout the year, parents are invited to take part in different activities or attend school functions. This year there has already been a Family Fun Night, Advent Fair and Christmas Nativity. Further events such as a Spring Show, Sports days, Fun Run are all planned for this year. We have a highly successful Parent Council who meet regularly to support the life and work of the school.

THE PARENT COUNCIL Gartocharn Primary has an active Parent Council which is committed to supporting the life and work of the school. As a new parent you will be invited to join the Parent Council or take part in fundraising initiatives during the school year. See contact details on page 30 for further information on parental involvement. Our parent council members give generously of their time for a meeting each term to discuss how they can best support the school with different projects. They plan and organise specific fund raisers and in a previous session planned and organised a highly successful Starstruck Contest. Proceeds from this have been used to support outdoor learning; playground equipment, and to fund parties at Halloween and Christmas. Parents on the Parent Council represent the wider parent group and often represent viewpoints leading to changes in procedures and routines in the school. New members are very welcome.

Telephone Interpreting The Council provides a 24 hour telephone interpreting service, the current provider is Language Line. We are currently reviewing out translation and interpretation services. The telephone interpreting service is simple and easy to use and the supporting material makes it easy to identify language requirements in face to face situations. A ‘Guide to Using Services’ is available from Community Planning and Policy or can be downloaded from here Face to Face Interpretation Where services need to provide information in community languages guidance is provided within 'Communicating Effectively'. This includes a list of approved contracts and is available on the Council's website or from Community Planning and Policy. Interpreters can be engaged to assist at meetings or in other situations as required. Translated Text All council publications must be offered in alternative formats or community languages. It may not be cost effective to translate a large publication, and in these instances a summary version of the document should be offered, or a meeting, supported by an interpreter, could be arranged to explain the key issues. Download examples of the standard phrase in community languages. We are currently reviewing our translated materials and the languages they are provided in and working with relevant community groups on this.
