Science Honors Program
The Columbia University Science Honors Program (SHP) is
a highly selective program for high school students who
have a strong interest in science and mathematics. The
SHP holds classes at Columbia from 10:00 A.M. to 12:30
P.M. on Saturdays throughout the academic year. Courses
are given in the physical, chemical, biological, behavioral,
and computing sciences, as well as in pure and applied
mathematics. Instructors are scientists and mathematicians
who are actively engaged in research at the University.
The SHP is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021
academic year. Applicants must currently be in the 11th,
10th, or 9th grade. Columbia will be selecting 400 students
for the program from approximately 750 schools in the
metropolitan New York area. The program uses an online
application process.
The selection of students will be based on the online
application, grade transcripts, letters of
recommendation, and student performance on an
entrance examination to be taken at Columbia
University on either March 28, 2020 or April 25, 2020.
There is a $50.00 testing fee that must accompany
the application (a fee waiver may be requested).

The College Board National Recognition ProgramsStarting in fall 2019, if you take the PSAT/NMSQT and you're African American, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, attend
school in a rural area, or are from a small town, you may be invited to apply for academic recognition as part of the College Board
National Recognition Programs*.
Benefits
The College Board National Recognition Programs are academic honors that can be included on college applications. They're not scholarships, but
colleges use them to identify academically exceptional students.
We are working with four of our College Board strategic partners to distribute the honors. These partners are:
•African American Recognition–Jackie Robinson Foundation
•Hispanic Recognition–Hispanic Scholarship Fund
•Indigenous Recognition–Indigenous Education, Inc.
•Rural and Small Town Recognition–Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
The College Board reaches out to students who:
• Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of their junior year.
• Identify as African American, Hispanic or Latinx, or Indigenous.
• Attend school in a rural area or are from a small town. Location is based on information from the National Center for Education
Statistics.
• Achieve the minimum requested PSAT/NMSQT scores (qualifying level may vary by state each year).
• Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year.

South Asian Youth Initiative (SAYI)South Asian student leaders at Yale, Columbia, and other partner schools have been
collaborating to create a unique event called the South Asian Youth Initiative (SAYI). The
initiative has an overarching goal of creating community amongst young South Asians
and South Asian-Americans from all over the US, while also serving as a forum for
activism, discussion and solidarity.
This year, SAYI is organizing a series of workshops (on topics such as campaign strategy, mental
health, gender violence), panel discussions (on topics such as business, activism, politics, etc..),
affinity groups, break out sessions, performances, mentorship events, and a speaker series.
Although the topics that will be discussed throughout this conference will be diverse, they will fall
on the spectrum of issues that disproportionately and uniquely affect the South Asian diaspora.
The South Asian Youth Initiative Conference tackles a wider range of topics and conversations
than ever before, and has the theme-- “Empowering and Mentoring Our Generation” --as a
guiding principle in conference planning and preparation.
The conference is going to be held on February 8th, 2020 at Yale.
For more details about the conference, please visit the
website: https://southasianyouthini.wixsite.com/mysite
