LEVEL: Intermediate (B1) TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Group work SKILLS: Speaking (vocabulary) AIM To revise vocabulary related to school and education. LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL AREA Vocabulary related to school and education. TASK To play the School Board Game in groups. PREPARATION AND MATERIALS Make a copy of the board game per group (4 students). Make a copy of one set of questions (green vocabulary cards) and one set of answers (red vocabulary cards) per group. You also need a die and 4 counters per group. TIMING +1 hour (depending on how talkative the class is). PROCEDURE Tell students that they are going to play a board game in order to revise vocabulary related to education. Hand out a copy of the board game, a copy of the two sets of vocabulary cards (questions and answers), a die and counters for each group. Students have to throw the die and follow the instructions on each square of the board game. There are three options: 1. If students land on a green square, they have to pick a green card and answer a vocabulary question. The other students have to check the answer. If it’s correct, the student can throw the die again (3 times maximum). If the answer is incorrect, the student goes back one square. 2. If students land on a square which has a topic written in blue, they have to speak about the topic on the board for 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes, each of the other students has to ask one question related to this topic. 3. If students land on a square with a black number, they simply have to read the instructions and either move forward, go back or miss a turn. 4. The first player to reach the finish wins the game. ANSWERS See red vocabulary cards with answers. The teacher has to circulate and monitor the students’ answers when they are doing the speaking topics.
