school council elections
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our
School Councillors of 2019 for their commitment and
contribution to our school. Parents on School Council
help to shape the direction of the school and have a
direct influence on the quality of education provided
for our students. It is time for our annual School
Council elections. Information regarding the role of
School Council and the process involved in becoming
a member has been sent home with the children
today.
We are currently calling for nominations for 4
parent positions and 2 DET positions. Please
refer to the additional information sent home
today if you are thinking of nominating and would
like to become a part of our School Council for
2020.
Nomination forms are available at the office on
request and are due in by 4 pm Thursday 20th
February.
Changes to assembly
As a result of feedback from students and teachers,
along with an increase in school numbers, we have
made the decision to trial a change to assembly. We
will be alternating each Monday between a Junior (P-
2) and Senior (3-6) assembly with the final assembly
at the end of each term for the whole school. The aim
of this change is to provide greater space for our
increase in numbers and provide our students with
additional learning time. We are hoping that
assembly will become more relevant to the age of the
students and that we can have additional student
items to keep them engaged. Please refer to the
assembly timetable on the calendar page of this
newsletter. We will also flexibuzz an assembly
reminder each week.
Road work on Mornington Tyabb Road
We have been notified by the Shire that there will be road works on Mornington Tyabb Road during February and March. These road works may lead to a part closure and detour. We have expressed our concerns to the Shire that this is our main access, drive through and carpark and have been told that they will provide us with greater detail closer to the time. At this stage we are unsure of the impact of this and will keep you up to date as we are provided with
further information.
School leaders
Our Year Six students have had a great start to the
year. During the ‘start up’ program it is reinforced that
all of our Year 6 students are leaders of the school
and role models to the younger year levels. The
beginning of the year also brings with it an
opportunity for our senior students to take on
leadership positions across the school. I congratulate
the following students who have been appointed
leadership positions for 2020:

Year 6 camp
Last week Ms Grinsted and Mrs Howden visited the grade 6 students at Camp Woorabinda. The children enjoyed hiking, flying fox, high ropes, canoeing, raft and hut building and a visit to the farm. Our students had a fabulous time and are to be congratulated for their excellent attitude and for making the most of every opportunity. Well done grade 6!
READING ROCKS AND SO DO YOU!!
It was terrific to hear that many students continued their
love for reading over the holidays. Sophie, Emily and
Hannah from 3A proudly showed me that they read most
nights during the holidays. Now that we are back at school
we will start to count our nights of reading ready for our
100, 200 and 300 nights of reading.
Canteen
The canteen is looking for more volunteers. If you are
able to assist at all, can you please let the office know
or contact the Canteen Manager, Jantina Forecast.
Canteen helpers are required on Tuesday mornings,
Wednesday mornings and afternoon and Friday
afternoon. Volunteers will require a Working with
Children's check. These are free for volunteers.

School receives 5% commission that goes back to the
school.
Rugby jumper update
At the end of last year, the
company that provides us
with our rugby jumpers
informed us that there will be
a substantial increase in
price, due to the small
number of jumpers that we
order each year. As the price for these jumpers was
already $75 we have decided to go with our current
uniform company Beleza who can provide us with a
very similar rugby jumper with school logo for
approximately $50. These will be stocked at Beleza
and parents will be able to buy them directly from the
store. Parents who paid for their jumpers last year will
be refunded so they can purchase directly from
Beleza. These may not be available until June/July.
Students will be able to wear old jumpers until they
gradually phase out.
Tyabb Primary School Bulletin: 13th February 2020 Page 3 ‘From little things, big things grow’
We appreciate that we have parking and traffic issues
at drop off and pick up time, especially at 3.30pm due
to the high volume of students leaving both Tyabb PS
and Flinders College. With patience the traffic is
always clear by 3.50pm. We would fix these problems
if we could but are restricted by a lack of funds, lack of
land owned by the school and the fact that we do not
own the land that the drive through sits on .
Our School Council has been in constant discussions
with both the Local Council and Vic Roads to see what
can be done to improve some of the parking issues.
There have been many ideas put forward over these
years including a turning lane on Mornington Tyabb
Road, extending the drive through in to the reserve,
widening the drive through to include a path and angle
parking, carpark in the old tennis court of the reserve
and a carpark at end of the oval. The problem is that
significant projects like these need approval from
various authorities and cost thousands of dollars.
Funds which are well out of our reach.
In the meantime our School Council have
implemented small measures to improve the flow.
These have included pushing for new paths and the
parking lane on McLaurin Drive. We worked with the
Local Council to implement the 5 minute pick-up zone
out the front of the school which has significantly
helped with the flow of traffic.
We share the concern of our community and urge you
to consider your children’s safety and the safety of
others when you are dropping off and picking up from
the school by being patient and considerate. Please
consider some of the following:
Please do not stop and wait in the middle of Jones
Road for a spot.
If there is not a parking spot please keep moving
along to see if there are spots further on. Parents
often stop when there are spots further on.
If there is not a spot continue along Jones Road,
turn around and come back for another attempt. To
turn around you must drive around McLaurin Drive
and turn back on to Jones Road or continue to the
Bungower Road roundabout.
Obey all parking restrictions and signage including
NO STANDING zones. Parents are not permitted to
park opposite the school and crossing this road is
extremely dangerous for both you and your child.
NO STANDING zones are there to keep people
safe and are fully enforced .
Obey the NO ENTRY sign on Mornington Tyabb
Road as entering this may lead to a collision with
vehicles using the drive through correctly and
threaten the safety of students and parents.
Obey the 5 minute parking rule at the front of our
school between 3.30 – 4.00pm. Stress to your child
to ‘watch and wait’ so you do not need to get out of
the car to look for your child. A speedy changeover
of cars improves the flow of traffic.
Police patrol local schools to improve the flow of traffic. The
Mornington Peninsula Shire also send out officers to
enforce the rules listed on the following document. All of
these rules are aimed at improving the flow of traffic and
ensuring the safety of our students, drivers and
pedestrians. Please note that infringements are from last
year and may be higher in 2020.
Warning: Parents that enter the driveway through the middle exit on Mornington
Tyabb Road by ignoring the NO ENTRY sign are posing a real risk and threat to
the safety of our students and parents. Please obey all signs!!!
Tyabb Primary School Bulletin: 13th February 2020 Page 4 ‘From little things, big things grow’
Parking Awareness Program
Many schools on the Mornington Peninsula face challenges in relation to the amount of available parking close to school entrances and this limited parking leads to problems with traffic flow and safety during drop off and pick up times. The School Parking Awareness Program aims to reduce the congestion and improve the safety of pedestrians and drivers specifically during these times by ensuring drivers are aware and observe road rules and signage which is in place. Council Officers will be attending schools on a random basis across the year. Officers will identify drivers committing offences, drivers may be verbally cautioned, or issued with an infringement notice. The types of offences relating to the Road Safety Road Rules 2017; Rule 171 – Stopping on or near a children’s crossing: ‘A driver must not stop on a children’s crossing, or on the road within 20 metres before the crossing and 10 metres after the crossing’. Infringement notice: $161.00 Rule 167 – No stopping signs: ‘A driver must not stop on a length of road or in an area to which a no stopping sign applies’. Infringement notice: $161.00 Rule 183 – Stopping in a bus zone: ‘A driver must not stop in a bus zone unless the driver is driving a public bus’. Infringement notice: $97.00 Rule 197 – Stopping on a path, dividing strip, nature strip, painted island or traffic island: A driver must not stop on a bicycle path, footpath, shared path or dividing strip, or a nature strip adjacent to a length of road in a built-up area: Infringement notice: $97.00 Rule 189 – Double parking: ‘A driver must not stop on a road if to do so would put any part of the vehicle that the driver is driving between a vehicle that is parked on the road and the centre of the road’. Infringement notice: $97.00 Rule 203 – Stopping in a parking area for people with disabilities: A driver must not stop in a parking area for people with disabilities unless: the driver’ vehicle displays a current parking permit for people with disabilities; and the driver complies with the conditions of the use of the permit. Infringement notice: $161.00 Rule 169 – No stopping on a road with a yellow edge line: A driver must not stop at the side of a road marked with a continuous yellow edge line. Infringement notice: $97.00 Rule 205 – Parking for longer than indicated: A driver must not park continuously on a length of road, or in an area, to which a permissive parking sign applies for longer than the period indicated by information on or with the sign or, if rule 206 applies to the driver, the period allowed under the rule. Infringement notice: $81.00 Drivers should be aware that at times Officers will take notes or photographs of drivers parking in contravention of the road rules. Any notes or photographs taken are used for the sole purpose of proving evidence that an offence has taken place. The Shire works directly with many schools to improve the traffic flow and availability of parking. However, the reality is such that there will never be enough parking during the high demand periods. Other options to reduce congestion may include walking to and from school, carpooling or arriving earlier or later to
the main peak which often lasts only a short time.

VISITING PSYCHOLOGIST / COUNSELLOR
In 2018 we secured the services of ER Psychology
for the students requiring assistance with their
mental health.
Liz will be offering her services on a fortnightly
basis at Tyabb. The students accessing this service
at the school require an up to date Mental Health
Plan to access up to 10 sessions with Liz. Some
students require less than 10 sessions. These
sessions are held at the school during school hours.
If you feel that your child would benefit from the
services of a psychologist/counsellor, please do not
hesitate to make contact with Kris Grinsted (Acting
Assistant Principal) / Welfare co-ordinator. Please
read the information below as to the services that
are offered.
Liz Russell
B.A., Post Grad Dip. (Psych), M. Psych (Health),
MAPS
Registered Psychologist & Director at ER
Psychology
Fully registered as a psychologist with the Australian
Health Practitioner Registration Association (AHPRA)
since 2008, Liz has completed a Master’s degree in
Health Psychology at Monash University, and also a
Supervised Practice Plan in Darwin and Melbourne.
Liz has 18 years of counselling experience, and has
worked with adults, adolescents and children in
individual and group settings. In addition to seeing
private patients at ER Psychology located at the
Humphries Road Medical Centre, Liz provides on-site
psychological therapeutic care to children ranging in
age from 5 – 11 years, at several Peninsula based
primary schools.
Liz has worked with a range of presenting problems
including health related concerns, chronic pain,
depression, anxiety, stress; loss of confidence, poor
self-esteem, adjustment disorders, grief and loss, and
behavioural disorders.
Liz’s approach to presenting problems is to examine
the biological, psychological, and social components
that underpin the issues presented by clients. She
takes an integrative approach to counselling, and
mainly uses client-centred, cognitive behavioural,
and strength based therapies.
Liz and Dominique visit the school on a regular basis
and have been very proactive in helping a number of
students at Tyabb PS over the past 12 months.
Sessions are held at the school during school hours.
They have a passion for helping children and their
professional approach to a range of requests from
parents has been outstanding.
I highly recommend their services for any children
who are experiencing stress, anxiety, school refusal
or personal issues in their life.

Mathletics At the beginning of the year, all
parents paid for a Mathletics account
as part of their booklist payments. We
encourage your students to use
Mathletics at home as well as it is an
online program. Students will be able
to challenge students from all around
the world and increase their
knowledge of concepts they have
been learning at school.
To use Mathletics at home students
need to visit www.mathletics.com
and enter their username and
password. Please contact your child’s
teacher if you do not have the
username and password at home.
Maths Workshops Students from grades one through to
six will be learning about Number and
Place Value in Term One this year. This
will help build the foundational
knowledge of number that is integral
to understanding harder concepts.
Students will be completing pre-tests
to show what they already know.
They will then visit a variety of
teachers to learn with other students
at their point of need. This helps to
target the needs of students and
ensures students are learning the
next steps in their Mathematical
journey.
Prep Our prep students have begun
learning their numbers and basic
counting. When they aren’t counting,
they are learning about location,
including under, beside and next to.
Grade 5 Students in grade five have been
learning about measurement and the
many different formal and informal
ways to measure objects. They have
been focusing on estimating how
many objects make one metre.

Grade 6 students visit Woorabinda Camp Woorabinda is located in Yallourn North, on the beautiful Lake Narracan. It was the perfect setting for
our Grade 6 week long camp, which focuses on building cooperation, courtesy and consideration for others.
Over the course of the week, the students cooked their own lunch on a campfire, built rafts, went canoeing,
fed alpacas at the farm, balanced on the High Ropes, zoomed down the zip line and shot arrows at the
targets during archery. The week ended with The Quest but “ssshhhhhhhh”… The secrets of the Quest will
be kept for future students who attend this camp. Mr Emmett, Mrs Monea, Mr Davies, Yashmin and Jaye
were so impressed with the students’ behaviour and attitudes throughout the entire week. Thanks go to
Jenny Johnson and Simone Kingston for volunteering their time to help our students during camp. We all
left camp feeling exhausted but completely thrilled and grateful for all of the fun that we had.

Music Instrumental Program: Our Instrumental program has begun so if you would like your children to learn an instrument please obtain a form from the office to fill out and hand in. We are offering guitar, vocals, piano, violin, drums and some woodwind instruments.
On a sad note one of our long time teachers is stepping back from teaching piano at Tyabb. Julia Furneaux, now Johnson, has been at Tyabb for 18 years and taught many of our students successfully, some doing exams and passing well. Her contribution to the music program has been outstanding. Thank you Julia.
At this point Nathanael Furneaux is teaching piano on Tuesday mornings and hopefully will be able to take on some of Julia’s students.
Band: Monday lunchtime beginning 1:30. There has been a lot of students joining band from Grades 5 and 6 as evident at the whole school assembly. Well done to the band for their first performance playing the anthem. Great job. Keep practising.
Choir: Tuesday Lunchtime 1:30 – 2:00. This has also started. Students in grades 3-6 are welcome.
