Scholarships for Studying Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren

Scholarship if you are:

A U.S. citizen at the time of application

A high school graduate, or have earned a GED

Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United

States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration

of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.

Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country

outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren Scholarships are

not for study in the United States.

Boren Fellowship

Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique

funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in

world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa,

Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of

Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Award Amounts

Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for overseas study. In addition, Boren Fellowships can

provide limited funding for domestic language study that will supplement the overseas

component. The maximum award for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000.

WOLLITZER MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS IN AREA OR COMPARATIVE STUDIES. For high-

achieving students who want to study in one of 19 locations in Africa, Asia, or Latin America, or

pursue comparative studies in such areas as religion or business. Awards: $2,500 per student

CIEE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS. For strong students of

architecture, design, or engineering who want to attend an architecture and design program in

Barcelona, Berlin, Prague, or New York City. Awards: $2,500 per student

CIEE ENGINEERING MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS. For strong students of engineering who plan

to further their studies with one of three programs: Engineering, Technology & Society in Dublin;

Engineering & Society in Madrid; or Business, Engineering, Arts & Sciences in Sharjah, United

Arab Emirates. Awards: $2,500 per student

CIEE BUSINESS, FINANCE, AND MANAGEMENT MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS. For high-

achieving students in business, management, finance, and accounting programs who enroll in

programs that focus on business or economics. Awards: $2,500 per student

RITZMANN TROPICAL AND MARINE ECOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS. For strong students

who plan to further their studies in environmental sciences and sustainability with the

Sustainability and the Environment or Tropical Ecology and Conservations programs in Costa

Rica or Bonaire. Awards: $2,500 per student

CIEE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES/SCIENCES AND SUSTAINABILITY MERIT

SCHOLARSHIPS. For high-achieving students of environmental sciences and sustainability who

want to pursue these topics with study abroad. Awards: $2,500 per student

MCDERMOTT HEALTH SCIENCES, NURSING, AND PUBLIC HEALTH MERIT

SCHOLARSHIPS. For high-achieving students who want to study community public health or

nursing with specific CIEE programs in Argentina, Botswana, Dominican Republic, and

Thailand. Awards: $2,500 per student

LANGUAGE INTENSIVE-FOCUS TRACK (LIFT) MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS. For students

who want to pursue an intensive language program for one academic year in Argentina, Belgium,

Brazil, Chile, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Peru, Russia,

Senegal, Spain, or Taiwan. Awards: $5,000 per student

Access Grants and Scholarships – for students who have historically been unable to study abroad

because of financial circumstances

CIEE offers three types of scholarships to make study abroad affordable for students who face

financial and social hurdles. Awards are made based on personal statements from student

applicants and financial need, based on economic profile and estimated family contribution

(EFC).

GLOBAL ACCESS INITIATIVE (GAIN) GRANTS. For students who demonstrate financial

need, CIEE provides direct support for travel. Awards: Up to $1,500 per student

BAILEY MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTION GRANTS. For minority students from

minority-serving institutions who demonstrate financial need based on EFC. Awards: Up to

$2,000 per student

BOWMAN TRAVEL GRANTS. For students who want to pursue study abroad in Africa, Asia

Pacific, the Caribbean, or Latin America, and who demonstrate financial need based on EFC.

Awards: Up to $2,000 per student

CIEE/MIUSA ACCESS TO THE WORLD SCHOLARSHIP. CIEE and Mobility International

USA are partnering to give more U.S. college students with disabilities the chance to study

Ambassador Grants – for motivated, high-achieving, students who are committed to capturing

and sharing the many transformative benefits of international education after they return to

campus.

CIEE GLOBAL AMBASSADORS MERIT GRANTS. Awarded to motivated students who are eager to

share the many transformative benefits of studying abroad when they return to campus. Awards are based

on personal statements from student applicants that demonstrate motivation and financial need based on

estimated family contribution (EFC). Awards: Up to $1,500 per student

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship

There are seven types of Japanese government-sponsored scholarships available under the

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program: those for research students,

teacher training students, undergraduate university students, Japanese studies students, college of

technology students, special training students and YLP students

Morgan Stanley Scholarships for Study in Japan

Underscoring its long-term commitment to education and fostering U.S.-Japan relations, Morgan

Stanley, which has had a presence in Japan for more than 40 years, is proud to support the US-

Japan Bridging Foundation’s Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan.

For the next competition, applications are being solicited in spring of 2015. Eligible students

include students at US universities who have an interest in economics and international finance

and who have been accepted for study in Japan for the 2015-2016 academic year. Winners of the

Morgan Stanley Japan Scholarships will be awarded scholarships of $7,500 to help finance their

studies.

AIFS Study Abroad Scholarships, Grants and Financial Support

Each year, more than $600,000 in scholarships, grants and financial support is awarded to

deserving students & institutions. Funds are available for both summer and semester programs.

AIFS Generation Study Abroad Scholarships

Semester: $1,000/scholarship, up to 40 awards

Summer: $500/scholarship, up to 50 awards

Eligibility: Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they

are applying and have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

Diversity Scholarships

DiversityAbroad.com Scholarship – sponsored by the AIFS Foundation

DiversityAbroad.com, in cooperation with the AIFS Foundation, will offer five $500

scholarships per semester for study abroad. Scholarships are available for students studying

abroad on any program offered by a DiversityAbroad.com member organization. African-

American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native-American students are strongly

Diversity Abroad Achievement Scholarship – offered by AIFS

Each semester, AIFS offers up to 10 semester scholarships of $1000 to outstanding students from

under-represented groups. Applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement and/or

participate in community service activities.

AIFS-HACU Scholarships

The purpose of the program is to provide scholarships for outstanding Hispanic students to study

abroad with AIFS. This special scholarship will be available to students attending HACU

member schools. To find out more about HACU, visit www.hacu.net .

Scholarship winners can study for a semester (Fall or Spring) or summer on any AIFS program.

Awards/Eligibility: Students will receive scholarships of 50% of the AIFS all-inclusive program

fee. Students must meet all standard AIFS eligibility requirements.

AIFS Foundation/Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship

The AIFS Foundation has donated five $5,000 scholarships to the Fund for Education Abroad

(FEA) for study abroad semester programs. To apply for these or any of FEA’s scholarship

opportunities, visit www.fundforeducationabroad.org.

Awards:

Five (5) AIFS Foundation/FEA scholarships worth $5,000 each for students to study abroad

during the semester.

An additional $500 scholarship will be awarded by AIFS Study Abroad to any of these

scholarship recipients that participates on an AIFS program.

Study Again with AIFS Grants

If you studied abroad on an AIFS summer program, you will receive a $1000 grant to study

abroad on an AIFS semester or academic year catalog program, or a $500 grant toward a summer

catalog program.

U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Project Abroad Scholarship

for Programs in China

The CIEE scholarship program was created with funding from the U.S. Department of Education

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad to provide scholarship funding to qualified CIEE

program participants that intend to continue advanced studies in the Chinese language and

pursue a career in academia or public affairs following their semester or year with CIEE in China

or Taiwan. Participants of advanced language programs offered by the CIEE Study Centers at

Peking University (Beijing), East China Normal University (Shanghai), Nanjing University

[Nanjing], and National Chengchi University (Taipei) are encouraged to apply for these awards.

Interested students must meet the following requirements:

* Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident. Proof of this status is required as part of the

application for this scholarship (copy of a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or green card).

* Be a junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an institution of higher learning who plans

to pursue advanced study or a career related to China in the areas of academia or public affairs.

* Have completed 2 years, or the equivalent, of college-level Mandarin Chinese language

training by the beginning of the program. Equivalency may be based on a language professor's

evaluation or a language proficiency exam score.

* Demonstrate high merit.

* Demonstrate financial need.

Available to CIEE Study Center applicants for the programs in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and

Taipei only.

API awards approximately $400,000 in study abroad scholarships annually ranging from $250 -

$1,000 per student. Participants may apply for multiple API scholarships (though may only be

The API regional scholarships provide awards that range from $250 to $800 per session.

academic year, and summer students.

API-JCU Early Bird Scholarship Students who are interested in studying abroad with API at John Cabot University in

Rome have the opportunity to earn an “early bird scholarship” in the form of a $200 –

$350 program fee deduction, simply by applying to the program in advance of the

application deadlines.

In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must submit their application to the

API/JCU program according to the following schedule:

provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant

funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad

programs worldwide.

Rotary District 5890

2015-2016 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

District 5890 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships will be used to fund one year of post-

baccalaureate study at a recognized university in a non-U.S. country in a study discipline that

supports the Object of Rotary and the Mission of The Rotary Foundation (see www.rotary.org).

Applicants’ planned studies must:

Lead to sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of the following six Areas of Focus:

(a) Peace and conflict prevention/resolution;

(b) Disease prevention and treatment;

(c) Water and sanitation;

(d) Maternal and child health;

(e) Basic education and literacy; and/or

(f) Economic and community development

Rotary club in District 5890. All Required Documents (see page 5) must reach the District

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships Chair no later than October 10, 2014. Applicants are not to

Lulac National Scholarship Fund

LNESC and LULAC established the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) to help youth

in underserved communities make the dream of college enrollment a reality. LNSF is a unique

partnership between grassroots advocates and corporations that funds educational opportunities

for deserving youth across the U.S. Every dollar raised by local LULAC Councils is matched by

corporate partners secured by LNESC, increasing the amount given in both the council and

corporate names. This model results in a true grassroots/corporate partnership for the

empowerment of the Latino community. Former recipients of LNSF scholarships are now

leaders in fields of business, science, government, and education. A rigorous selection process

assures the expectation that future recipients will demonstrate the same level of excellence.

LNSF Award Criteria: Applicants are eligible for the following three types of scholarship awards.

National Scholastic Achievement Awards ($2,000) GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and if the student is an entering freshman. 29 or

higher on the ACT test, or 1350 or higher on the SAT test.

Honors Awards ($500 to $2,000)

GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and if the student is an entering freshman. 23 or

higher on the ACT test, or 1100 or higher on the SAT test.

General Awards ($250 to $1,000)

Grades and academic performance will serve as indicators of potential; however, an emphasis

may be placed on the individual's motivation, sincerity, and community involvement.\

GE/LNESC Scholarship

The partnership between the General Electric Foundation and the LNESC Scholarship Program

is intended to assist and encourage outstanding minority students in completing their college

education. The program is directed specifically to disadvantaged minority students with career

interests in business or engineering.

The GE/LNESC Scholarship Program awards $5,000 scholarships to qualified minority students

who are enrolled as business or engineering majors. Applicants must be working towards a

bachelor's degree at an accredited US college or university, and must be classified as college

sophomores in the fall. The $5,000 awards will be divided into two equal disbursements made on

September 15th and January 31st. Scholarship awards are sent directly to the recipient’s college

or university and deposited in the recipient’s name. The funds will be allocated toward the

payment of tuition and academic fees, and the purchase of required educational materials and

books. The school is custodian of the funds and will disburse the award consistent with the

purpose of this program.

ExxonMobil/LNESC Scholarship (students who plan to attend a full-time

program in engineering leading to a bachelor’s degree an accredited college or

university in the U.S.)

The ExxonMobil/LNESC Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding Hispanic high school

seniors who plan to pursue a degree in engineering at U. S. post-secondary institutions.

Sponsored by the Exxon Mobil Corporation, LNESC will award one (1) national scholarship of

$20,000, paid over four years, and twelve (12) $2,000 local scholarships to qualified high school

seniors.

RMHC®/HACER® Scholarship

RMHC/HACER is a scholarship for Hispanic students presented by Ronald McDonald House

Charities® with the support of McDonald's®. The scholarship provides financial assistance to

graduating Hispanic high school students to fulfill their dreams of pursing a higher education.

Students are selected based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and

community involvement. Since 1985, RMHC has awarded more than $24 million in scholarships

to Hispanic students to support their college education dreams.

CHCI Scholarship Program Mission

The mission of CHCI Scholarship Program is to provide critical financial assistance that will

increase graduation rates among Latino students in post-secondary education.

CHCI's scholarship opportunities are afforded to Latino students in the United States who have a

history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who

demonstrate a desire to continue their civic engagement in the future. There is no GPA or

academic major requirement. Students with excellent leadership potential are encouraged to

apply.

CHCI scholarships provide recipients with a one time scholarship of:

$1,000 to pursue an associate degree

$2,500 to pursue an undergraduate degree

$5,000 to pursue graduate-level study

Scholarship awards are intended to provide assistance with tuition, room and board, textbooks,

and other educational expenses associated with college enrollment.

In an effort to ensure the progress of scholarship recipients and encourage completion of the

over the number of years required for graduation (i.e. a $2,500 scholarship for a college

freshman will be distributed in four equal installments of $625 a year).

Students continue to receive annual disbursements as long as they maintain good academic

standing. CHCI manages the disbursement of the scholarships; an annual check is sent directly to

recipients.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS)

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program staff now begins the next phase of the work to

select 1,000 extraordinary young people, each who will receive a good-through-graduation

scholarship to use at any U.S. based, accredited college or university of their choice.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda

Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American

Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American**, and Hispanic American students

with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of

interest. Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree

program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering,

library science, mathematics, public health or science.

Fulbright Program

Fulbright-mtvU Awards

Up to four Fulbright-mtvU awards will be available. Applications will be accepted for any

country to which there is an active Fulbright U.S. Student Program for Academic and Arts fields.

Projects should center around research on an aspect of international musical culture, and should

focus on contemporary or popular music as a cultural force for expression or change.

Preference will be given to creative projects that are conveyed in a dynamic fashion and are

accompanied by a feasible plan. In addition to presenting unique projects on music as a global

force for mutual understanding, applicants must submit a Documentation and Outreach Plan

describing how they intend to share their activities with their peers during their Fulbright year

abroad through mtvU print, broadcast and/or online mediums. The Documentation and Outreach

Plan form must be uploaded as part of the Fulbright application. Upload instructions can be

found in the application.

Applicants are encouraged to consider all aspects of the power of music in developing their

proposals. Along with the study of music in a specific cultural context, proposals will be

considered in other music-related fields, including music and social activism, music in learning,

music and the community, and musical performance.

Fulbright Academic, Arts and English Teaching Assistant Program Grants

Types of Applications

There are three types of grants offered:

Academic: Applications for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants will be considered for

academic study or research, or a combination of the two. Depending on the country of

application, grants may be for graduate study which lead toward a degree.

Arts: Applications for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants will be considered for practical

training in the creative and performing arts. To review the disciplines that qualify click here.

ETA: The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places recent college graduates and young

professionals as English teaching assistants in primary, secondary schools or universities

overseas - improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United

States while increasing the U.S. student's own language skills and knowledge of the host country.

Types of Applicants

You will apply either through a U.S. institution or At-Large. If you are currently enrolled in an

undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university, you are required to apply

through that institution, even if you are not currently resident there. If you are not currently

enrolled, you may apply through your alma mater, provided that the institution is willing and

able to accommodate alumni applications.

All other candidates will apply as At-Large applicants from their states of permanent residence,

even if they are currently overseas.

INSTITUTE OF HISPANIC CULTURE OF HOUSTON

The Institute of Hispanic Culture is now accepting applications for scholarships that will be

granted to high school, college, and medical school students for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Scholarship funds will be in the amount of

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS:

1.Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the U.S.A. Students with student visas

are not eligible.

2.They must be residents of the Houston Metropolitan area and be enrolled or anticipate to enroll

in an accredited junior college or college or university in Harris or adjacent counties.

3.High school students need to submit an official transcript from their high school(s) at the time

they submit their application. College or junior college students must submit official transcripts

from all colleges or universities they have attended. Graduate students will enclose an official

transcript of their graduate work. If they have completed only one semester of graduate work,

they should include a transcript or transcripts of their

undergraduate work.Copies of transcripts are not acceptable.

4.With each application, the student should enclose two letters of recommendation written in the

form provided by the Institute in two sealed envelopes signed on the back by the recommending

instructor.

5.High School students must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or its equivalent if GPA

is based on a scale of 4. If GPA is based on a scale of 5, students must have an overall grade

point average of 3.3.High school students whose transcript does not show a GPA score or class

rank should get a written statement from a school official indicating what the student's GPA is,

the rating scale that has been used and the student's class rank.

Such statement must be on school letterhead paper.

6. College or junior college students must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or its

equivalent. Students from colleges or universities that do not include a GPA score on transcripts

(Rice University, for example) must figure it out themselves and write it on the application form.

7. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to require evidence of financial need (such as

copies of income tax returns).

Deadlines: no later than Friday, March 6, 2015 or hand delivered to the IHCH Offices, no later

than 4:30 p.m. on Friday March 6, 2015.
