Scholarships make a difference for students at Waukesha County Technical College

“I am currently enrolled at WCTC full time, and I also have a full-time job and part-time job on the side, so receiving this scholarship has really helped. With the cost of tuition and books, I am grateful to have received this scholarship.”

Through scholarships, the WCTC Foundation helps WCTC students pay for tuition, books and other school related expenses. Currently, only about 10 percent of WCTC full-time students can receive a scholarship because of limited funding.

“I have returned to school after staying home with my three children for the last 18 years. This scholarship money has greatly helped my family financially and for that I am truly grateful. Thank you for providing scholarships to non-traditional students such as myself.”

Additional scholarship funding is needed for WCTC students as federal financial aid and employment programs lose funding, according to the College’s financial trends and data. Twice as many WCTC students are eligible to receive State of Wisconsin grants compared with those who actually receive the funds.

“Your generous support has had a profound impact on where I will transfer after graduating from WCTC. I have been accepted into the College of Engineering at Marquette University. Your generosity has made me appreciate the importance of charity.”

A WCTC full-time student’s base budget for an academic year is $5,300 for tuition, fees, books and supplies. A scholarship can help meet these costs and have a lasting impact on a student’s educational journey.

Annual Report JULY 1, 2011 – JUNE 30, 2012

Mary Manning and Stuart R. Schroeder

WCTC Foundation’s new leadership

The WCTC Foundation Board of Directors recently elected new leadership for the next two fiscal years. Stuart R. Schroeder will serve as chairman. Schroeder is the founding attorney and CEO of The Schroeder Group. Mary Manning, vice president of finance with the Spacesaver Corporation, has been elected the Foundation’s vice chairwoman. Manning is also a WCTC graduate and involved in the College’s Alumni initiative.

Ways to giveThere are several options which allow donors to support the students of WCTC:

Endowments

An endowment with the WCTC Foundation is an excellent tool for making a perpetual scholarship gift. An investment of $10,000 establishes a named endowment to benefit a specific category of students or a field of study that has been chosen by the donor. To accomplish this goal, gift commitments may be completed over a five-year period. Scholarships are awarded beginning the semester after the $10,000 goal is reached.

Named Scholarships

Named Scholarships are established to recognize a particular individual or organization. The purpose of the scholarship may be designed specifically by the donor. Honorary and memorial scholarships usually define a field of interest specifically related to the donor’s motivation. All Named Scholarships are promoted to students with information about the source of funding and purpose of the scholarship.

Advised Funds

Another form of support is through an Advised Fund. An Advised Fund is used for the support of specific programs of a department or division and/or the support of students enrolled at WCTC. Donors designating their gifts to an Advised fund may restrict their gift to student assistance, staff development, materials, equipment, etc.

In-kind Gifts

Each year, in-kind donations of equipment and services assist in enhancing the educational experiences of students at WCTC. In-kind giving is a unique and meaningful way to support the educational advancement of students and utilizes items that may have concluded their usefulness for business. In-kind donations can include: new products and inventory, production equipment, buildings, land, raw materials, machinery and tooling, office furniture and equipment, heavy equipment, vehicles and services.

WCTC Foundation recognizes graduates

More than 850 students applied to receive their degree, diploma, apprenticeship and/or certificate from Waukesha County Technical College this past spring. A record 405 graduates took part in WCTC’s Commencement held on May 23, 2012.

The keynote speaker was state Rep. Paul Farrow, a WCTC alumnus. At the ceremony, Tom Dalum, CEO of Dueco Inc., received the College’s “Citizen’s Service Award” for his contributions to WCTC and the Waukesha County community. Tom served on the WCTC Foundation Board for 10 years, and served as chairman from 1998-2000.

New this year, graduates were given maroon-colored “Stoles of Gratitude” from the WCTC Foundation in recognition of their achievement. Students were encouraged to pass the stoles on to someone in their life who helped them succeed or reach their educational goals.

Emergency funding for WCTC students Hand Up Grant (HUG)

Increasingly WCTC students face economic challenges as they work to complete their educational journey.

The “Hand Up Grant” (HUG) was developed to assist WCTC students in situations that would prevent them from continuing their education due to an emergency financial issue. The HUG is used to assist students who do not receive any financial assistance or scholarship funding. Students must be nominated for this grant by a WCTC counselor.

WCTC Campus Cupboard

Waukesha County Technical College opened the Campus Cupboard food pantry for students in need. The cupboard, located in the WCTC College Center, was opened to help students who would otherwise struggle with hunger. In an alarming new trend, college students are skipping meals to cope with the cost of tuition and a tough economy.

“Last spring, WCTC staff surveyed students to find out if there was a need for a Campus Cupboard at WCTC,” said Kelly Ratliff, assistant director of Student Development. “They received almost 500 responses from students and the results were overwhelming.”

“When we surveyed our students last year, nearly 40 percent of them reported skipping meals in order to save money,” said Ratliff, who organized the Campus Cupboard. Some students said they were skipping meals daily and others commented they skipped meals so they could feed their children first, she said.

Students who utilize the cupboard are asked to show their student ID and are limited to one pre-packed bag of food, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner items. The cupboard will help students meet their basic needs and perform better in the classroom, Ratliff said.

“We know that some of our students are struggling to make ends meet as they complete their educational journey,” Ratliff said. “We hope that by providing nutritional support at our Campus Cupboard, we can assist students in their success at WCTC and beyond.”
