SCHOOL OF DRAMA General

The following schedule indicates the scholarships and prizes which are available during 2004. Eligibility is confined to full-time students, and awards will be made only if a sufficiently high standard of work or performance is reached.

Scholarships

The Arnold Fleming Scholarships Two travelling scholarships of £150 each, for award annually to students in the first year of the undergraduate courses. The Avrom Greenbaum Players Award for Direction An award of £500, to the most promising student who is either on the postgraduate course in Direction or is an undergraduate in the final year having Direction as a specialism. The Julia Stewart Award An award of £250, to the best student of the year from all students of all undergraduate courses, as adjudged by the Director of the School of Drama.

Prizes for award on the results of specific competitions

The Foil Competition Prizes Prizes of fencing equipment, to the winners of the First Year Foil Competition. The Elaine Campbell Gullan Trophy A prize of £100, for verse speaking, for award to a third year student of the Acting or Contemporary Theatre Practice courses, or a student of the Master of Drama courses. The Duncan Macrae Memorial Award A prize of £300, awarded for the speaking of Scots verse or prose, to a third year student of the Acting or Contemporary Theatre Practice courses. The Duncan Macrae Competition Prize A prize of £150, awarded for the best single item in the Memorial Award competition.

Prizes awarded for good work or performance during the academic year

The Gordon Bottomley Prize A prize of £150, awarded by the Scottish Community Drama Association to a third year student of the Contemporary Theatre Practice course, for play direction. The Charles Brooke Memorial Prize A prize of £25, awarded for the speaking of Scots verse. The Mac Brydon Prize An annual award of £100 to a student displaying exceptional energy in the performance of rôles requiring physical stamina. The R C Buchanan Prize A prize of £35, awarded for good diction. The Citizens Theatre Society Award A prize of £100, awarded for a performance by a third year student of the Acting course in a modern play. The Norah Cooper-Mulligan Prize Two annual awards of £20 each for progress in verse speaking, to be awarded to second year students. The Simon Crowther Memorial Award A prize of £150 to commemorate Simon Crowther (DDA 1991), awarded to a third year student of any of the Drama courses who, in the judgement of the staff, has shown enthusiasm for and commitment to all aspects of the School. The Drama in Education Prize A prize of £50, awarded to a fourth year student of the Contemporary Theatre Practice course, for work in drama in education. The Margaret Gordon Prize A prize of £50, awarded for the best performance by a third year student of the Acting course in a theatre production.

The John Groves Award A prize of £100, awarded to a graduating third year student of the Technical and Production Arts course who has shown outstanding achievement in all areas of study during the three years of the course. The Hyacinth Havergal Prize A prize of £50, awarded for style in acting. The Incorporation of Wrights in Glasgow Prizes The terms of the award of these two valuable prizes will be announced at the start of the 2004/2005 academic session. The Dorothy Innes Prize A prize of £150, awarded for good studentship. The Paul Kelly Memorial Award A prize of £20, awarded to the student who has best displayed the qualities of talent and commit-ment as shown by Paul Kelly (DDA 1985). The balance of interest which has accrued on the Trust Fund in the preceding year will be paid at the discretion of the Governors of the Academy, in consultation with the current recipient of the Award, to a recognised medical charity concerned with cancer research or the care of persons suffering from cancer. The Phil McCall Memorial Prize A prize of £25 to commemorate Phil McCall, awarded for the best performance by a mature student on the BA(Acting) course. The Alex McCrindle Award A book awarded by the Scottish Committee of Equity for an outstanding individual piece of work by a third year student of the Technical and Production Arts course. The Mary Marquis Prize A prize of £100 for performance in television. The Movement Prize A prize of £20, awarded to a second year student of the Acting or Contemporary Theatre Practice courses. The Perth Festival of the Arts Award A prize of £100, awarded for non-performance work in television studies, to a student of the Technical and Production Arts course. The Tricia Scott Prize An annual award of £150 to commemorate Tricia Scott (DDA 1969), awarded to a third year student of the Acting course who has, in the opinion of the fellow students of his or her year group, displayed the qualities that typify a good company member consistently over the three years of the course The TPA Course Leader's Achievement Prize (Year I) A prize of £50, awarded to a first year student of the Technical and Production Arts course who has shown outstanding achievement in all areas of study during their first year. The TPA Course Leader's Achievement Prize (Year II) A prize of £50, awarded to a second year student of the Technical and Production Arts course who has shown outstanding achievement in all areas of study during their second year. The Percival Steeds Prize Books to the value of £50, awarded for appreciation of the spoken word. The Mary Stuart Prize A prize of £20, awarded for public speaking.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC General The following schedule indicates, in the briefest possible form, the awards which are available during Session 2004/2005. It should be noted that there are alterations from, and additions to, previous lists of awards. For the purposes of eligibility for entry to any of these competitions, full-time students are defined as those who are matriculated on any of the following courses: BA(Musical Studies); BA(Scottish Music); BMus; BEd(Music); PhD; MMus; Postgraduate Diploma. Part-time students include all those enrolled in the Department of Continuing Education (Junior/Intermediate/Higher/Advanced).

Scholarships and Prizes will be awarded only if a sufficiently high standard of performance is reached. A person who has previously been awarded a prize may not compete for it subsequently, except in the case of the Concerto Competition. Those prizes to be awarded at the Principal's discretion may, however, be awarded more than once.

Withdrawals from competitions are permitted at the discretion of the Director of Music only for good reason, and should be notified to the Concerts Organiser not less than seven working days prior to the competition. Students who withdraw from a competition after this without good reason will not be permitted to take part in any further competitions for the remainder of the session.

Competitors must supply their own accompanists, as necessary, except for the Governors' Recital Prizes, the Watson Forbes Prize for Viola Players and the Viola/Cello Challenge Prizes, when an official accompanist will be provided for each competitor if required.

The Willie Macpherson Prize for Scots Fiddle A prize of £300 to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to a student on the BA (Scottish Music) Course. The William & Betty Macpherson Prize A prize which combines the use of the Macpherson violin, the annual insurance premium for the violin and £250 to be awarded to a student selected from a competition by the Head of Strings.

Scholarships open to full-time students A number of Entrance Scholarships will be awarded on the results of the entrance examinations for full-time courses; no special entry is required. The Eric Dodds Brown Memorial Scholarship A prize of £300, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to an outstanding senior violin student (viz: Year III and above), for the continuation of his/her studies.

Prizes open to full-time students only

*The Hilda Bailey Prize for Violin A prize of £100, to be awarded for excellence in solo violin-playing on the results of a public competition. The work set will demand a high standard of technical proficiency. The set work for 2005 will be announced early in the first term. The Blair Brass Prize A prize of £100, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal for excellence for brass playing. The British Reserve Insurance Prize for Early Music A prize, total value £200, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal for the best solo or ensemble contribution to the work of the Early Music course. *The Chanterelle Guitar Prize A prize competition to promote solo and chamber music for the guitar. Candidates should offer two contrasting works, one of which should be chosen from the Chanterelle catalogue. Ensembles (mixed instrumental and/or vocal), should comprise between two and six performers. The overall duration must not exceed 20 minutes. The winner(s) will receive a voucher to the value of £200 to be spent on music or merchandise from the Chanterelle catalogue. *The Concerto Competition A performance of a concerto with one of the Academy orchestras at a public concert during the 2005/2006 session. The concerto must be for one or two solo instruments and of no more than 35 minutes' duration. The competition is open to undergraduate students in Years III and IV and to all postgraduate students. Students graduating at the end of the current academic year (2004/2005) are eligible. A condition of receiving the prize is that the winner(s) must be available for any performance date(s) offered. There is no monetary award or performance fee attached to this prize. A preliminary round will be held in which candidates perform c.8 minutes of their concerto. In the final round the chosen candidates will perform the concerto complete. This competition is not open to the public. The Eugene Cruft Prize for Double Bass A prize of £35 for good work, as decided by the Principal. The Hilda Anderson Deane Prize A prize of approximately £140, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to a full-time student in any musical subject for the furtherance of musical studies. This award represents the Academy's share of a bequest made by Mrs Deane for the benefit of students in the four Royal Schools and in the Guildhall School. The Bill Dewar Memorial Award A prize of approximately £400, presented by the Trustees of the Award to a Scottish full-time student of singing nominated by the Principal. The award is to be used to assist in the education and training of the student with a view to establishing a professional career in opera.

*The Dunbar-Gerber Prize for Chamber Music The object of this prize is to encourage string players and pianists to explore the rich chamber music repertoire. A prize of £200 (divisible equally among the winners) will be awarded on the result of competitive public performances of a single work drawn from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. The work should be written for one of the following instrumental combinations:

Duos Trios/Quartets Quintets Violin and piano Violin, cello, piano Two violins, viola, cello, piano Viola and piano Violin, viola, cello, piano Violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano Cello and piano

Other instrumental groupings (maximum five players) may be admitted, subject to the advance approval of the Concerts Organiser in consultation with the donors, but in any event a string player and a pianist must be included in the ensemble. The work offered must be of at least 20 minutes' and not more than 40 minutes' duration. The Euing Prizes for History, Form and Analysis Prizes of £30, to be awarded on the results of the annual examinations/assessments in History in Years I, II, III and IV of the undergraduate courses. *The Watson Forbes Prize for Viola Players Prizes of £150 (first) and £50 (second), awarded for competitive performances of:

Any movement(s) from the unaccompanied Cello Suites by J S Bach arranged for viola, duration not exceeding 10 minutes;

or

Any movement(s) from the Violin Sonatas and Partitas by J S Bach arranged for viola, duration not exceeding 10 minutes;

and

A piece of the candidate's own choice with piano accompaniment. This piece can be a solo or movement(s) from a concerto or sonata (with an official accompanist provided), again not exceeding 10 minutes. The James H Geddes Bursary for Repetiteurs A bursary of £250, awarded at the discretion of the Principal to assist in the education and training of a repetiteur. *The Norma Greig French Song Prize A prize of £150 for the best singing of a short programme of French Mélodies. Eligibility is confined to third and fourth year undergraduates and to students in any postgraduate course. Candidates should present a varied recital of approximately 15 minutes' duration and the programme must include at least one song by Roussel. *The Governors' Recital Prizes To be awarded on the results of competitive public recitals. There will be an external adjudicator in each subject. The duration of programmes, which must be approved by the Principal (and which are unalterable once submitted), will be 30 minutes for singers, percussion and woodwind players, 40 minutes for pianists and string players, and 25 minutes for brass players. The prize in chamber music may be awarded to Chamber Ensembles of three to eight players (including voice) and the programme should consist of a work or works with a total duration of not less than 25 minutes and not more than 40 minutes. Ensembles entering for this competition must have a consistent record of working together and this must be certified by the Departmental Heads concerned.

The programme content in each competition will be taken into account by the adjudicator. A preliminary round may be necessary for any of these competitions, in which case a shortened version of the submitted programme (c.10 minutes' duration) will be heard in a non-public context. With the exception of the competition in chamber music, Year I students are not eligible for these prizes.

Brass £125 Singing £125 Chamber Music £125 each Strings £125 Percussion £125 Woodwind £125 Piano £125 *The Jock Holden Memorial Mozart Piano Prize An annual prize of £500, to be awarded for a competitive performance of a Mozart piano concerto. In session 2004/2005 the set work will be the Piano Concerto in C major K467 and the winner will perform the concerto with the Academy Symphony Orchestra. The Florence Veitch Ibler Prize A prize of £10, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to the best performance by a student in a public performance of oratorio or in the Oratorio Class. *The John Ireland Prize Prizes awarded on the result of competitive performances of works by John Ireland in Voice and Piano Duo, Solo Piano and Chamber Music in rotation. This session the competition is for Chamber Music and the prize offered will be £250. Candidates should offer a programme of John Ireland's works of 20 to 25 minutes' duration. In addition to the prize money, the winner will be presented with a copy of the solo piano works of John Ireland. The David Knox Memorial Prize A prize of approximately £350, presented by the Trustees of the award to a student nominated by the Principal; the award to be used to assist in the education and training of a student who intends to follow a performing career. The Sandy and Rena Lyle Scholarship A prize of £250, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to a promising student in Year I of the BA(Scottish Music) course. The Jacqueline McCarthy Prize for Piano A prize of £100, to be awarded for the best performance of Russian piano music presented within the Governors' Recital Prize Competition. The piece(s) must be either a sonata and/or a set of smaller works by either Rakhmaninov or Prokofiev, and must represent a substantial part of the candidate's programme. The Robert McCreath Memorial Prize A prize of £100, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal and the Head of the Brass Department to a student who has made outstanding progress and the most significant contribution to the Department over his/her period of study.

The John MacGregor Flute Prize To be awarded at the discretion of the Principal and the Head of the Woodwind Department, to the most promising student on the basis of his/her musicianship and technical ability on the flute. The award, of £400, is to be used for or towards the purchase of a better instrument in order to assist the winner at the outset of a professional career. The John McInulty Prizes for Orchestral String Playing Prizes of £250 (first), £150 (second) and £100 (third), to be awarded on the recommendation of the Principal to a student who has made a conspicuously significant contribution to the string-playing element in the Academy's orchestral activities. The Alex Menzies Memorial Fund A prize of £450, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal to an outstanding piano accompanist. The Agnes Millar Harmony & Counterpoint Prizes Prizes of £20, to be awarded on the results of the annual examinations/assessments in Years I, II and III of the undergraduate courses. The Agnes Millar Prize for Sight-Singing A prize of £25, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal. The Peter Morrison Prize A prize of £250 to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal for all-round excellence and contribution to the corporate life of the Academy. The Patron's Fund Prize (Royal College of Music) for Composition A prize of £50, to be awarded for the best portfolio of original compositions presented by a full-time student of any course in the annual examinations. The Piano Accompaniment Prize A prize of £50, to be awarded to a student for general excellence in piano accompaniment as decided by the Principal. The Hugh S Roberton Prize for Orchestral Conducting A prize of £200, to be awarded at the discretion of the Principal. The Bessie Spence Prize for Violin A prize of £150, to be awarded for the public performance of a violin concerto, a comparable work for violin and orchestra, or a movement from either, at an Academy orchestral concert. *The Viola Challenge Prizes Prizes of £15 (first) and £10 (second), to be awarded on the result of a competitive performance of a set work. The set work will be announced three weeks prior to the competition and must be prepared unaided. Each candidate will be allowed a period of rehearsal with the official accompanist.

*The Violoncello Challenge Prizes Prizes of £30 (first) and £20 (second), to be awarded on the result of a competitive performance of a set work. The set work will be announced three weeks prior to the competition and must be prepared unaided. Each candidate will be allowed a period of rehearsal with the official accompanist. *The Ian D Watt Award The object of this award is to encourage string players and pianists to explore the rarely-heard sonata repertoire of twentieth-century composers. The award (annual value £300 divisible equally between the performers) is decided by public competition, which may take the form of either the performance of a complete sonata or a lecture-recital on one movement of a sonata. Works selected for performance must be approved in advance by the Concerts Organiser in consultation with the Director of Music. The award is open to all full-time students playing any orchestral string instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass) and their pianists. *Ye Cronies Opera Award An annual prize awarded by Trustees on the result of a competition, to make provision for the subsistence and tuition of advanced students of opera. Candidates will be required to sing two substantial and contrasting operatic arias. Eligibility is confined to final-year students of any undergraduate course and to students of the postgraduate courses. The winner of the Award must pursue full-time or part-time studies in opera at the Academy, another college of music, a university department of music or with a private teacher approved by the Head of the Department of Vocal Studies.

Scholarships open to part-time students only

The Macfarlane Scholarships These scholarships are grants to cover partial tuition fees for Junior students of British parentage at the Academy. Awards are made on the results of competitive examinations which are held during the Summer Term. Forms of entry must be lodged by 31 January. The John Macintyre Memorial Scholarship for Oboe A scholarship open to Junior students to cover partial tuition fees. The award is made on the results of entry auditions and reassessment auditions held during the Summer Term. Application forms must be lodged by 31 January. The Stevenson Scholarships Scholarships for part-time students progressing to full-time courses at the Academy. Awards are made on the results of the Academy's full-time entrance auditions. Two further scholarships are available for students studying in part-time courses at the Academy. Application forms, available from the General Office, must be lodged by 31 January. The Wolfson Scholarships These scholarships are grants to cover partial tuition fees for Junior students. Awards are made on the results of entrance auditions and reassessment auditions held during the Summer Term. Application forms must be lodged by 31 January.

*The Nan Christie Memorial Prize for Strings A prize of £50, to be awarded on the result of a public competition. Candidates will perform one piece of their own choice which must not exceed eight minutes' duration and should be equivalent to Grade 7 standard or above of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. The Dunbartonshire Music Club Prize A prize of £15, to be awarded by the Principal to a Junior student for outstanding work.

The Pearl Gelfer Prizes Prizes to be awarded to the candidates in the Associated Board Exams for Pianoforte (Grades 6, 7 and 8) who gain the highest marks in each grade. To qualify for a prize, the mark gained must be of 'Distinction' level (130 or above).

The William Hume Prize A prize of £30, to be awarded to the Junior Academy student who has made most progress during their first year on the course. *The Gilbert Innes Prizes for Piano, Woodwind and Brass Three prizes of £25, to be awarded on the result of public competitions. Candidates in each subject will perform one piece of their own choice which must not exceed eight minutes' duration and should be equivalent to Grade 7 standard or above of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Grade Prizes (Associated Board) Practical Examinations To be awarded to the candidate who gains the highest mark in Grade 5 and above in the practical examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. To qualify for a prize, the mark gained must be of 'Distinction' level (130 or above). This applies to each subject that is examined.

The minimum number of participants is three, the maximum nine. *The Bach Prize for Harpsichord, Piano and Organ A prize of £150, to be awarded on the result of a competition. Candidates will be required to offer a programme of keyboard works by J S Bach of 15 to 20 minutes' duration.

*The A Ramsay Calder Prizes Prizes of £800 (first) and £300 (second) – divisible equally between the performers – to be awarded on the result of a competitive performance of set works by Debussy in Pianoforte, Chamber Music and Voice and Piano Duo in rotation. This session the subject is Voice and Piano and candidates should present a programme of no more than 20 minutes of Debussy songs.

*The Margaret Dick Award A prize (minimum value £250) awarded by Trustees on the result of a competition. Candidates will be required to sing three works of a contrasting nature: for example, an aria, an item of Lieder and a twentieth-century song. Eligibility is confined to third and fourth year undergraduates, all postgraduates, and part-time Higher and Advanced Continuing Education students who wish to continue their studies either in the Academy or elsewhere in a full-time or part-time capacity during session 2005/2065. The Hester Dickson Prize A prize of £25, to be awarded to the pianist adjudged to be the best accompanist in the Frank Spedding Lieder Prize Competition The Philip Halstead Prize for Piano A prize of £75, to be awarded for the public performance of a piano concerto, a comparable work for piano and orchestra, or a movement from either, at an Academy orchestral concert. *The Peter Lindsay Miller Prize for Piano Duo Prizes of £30 each to two students for competitive performances of either Ravel's Ma Mère l'oye for Piano Duet or Milhaud's Scaramouche for Two Pianos. *The Hugh S Roberton Prizes for Scots Song Prizes of £75 (first) and £30 (second), to be awarded on the results of a competition. Candidates will be required to sing two contrasting Scots songs of their own choice. *The Frank Spedding Lieder Prize A prize of £200 to the best duo (singer and pianist), to be awarded on the result of a competition. Each duo will be required to present a programme of five songs in which the work of at least two of the following composers should be represented: Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Richard Strauss. Multiple entries by pianists are permitted. *The Dinah Wolfe Memorial Award A prize of £300, to be awarded for an original composition. The precise requirements will be announced early in the first term. The composition will be adjudicated by a distinguished guest composer and the first public performance of the winning work will take place during the Academy Now! Festival in May 2005.
