Seattle School Hall of Fame Kicks OffBy Dee Hawkes ’54

Think about it, for the fi st time, the Seattle Public School District has established an Athletic Hall of Fame (www.spsathletichalloffame.org). Kudos go to the committee for including old Broadway High School, Queen Anne and Lincoln, all which are now closed down. The committee made a significantdecision to honor both men and women athletes. Unfortunately, until Title IX passed in 1972 there weren’t any interscholastic girls’ sports. Justice has finally beenserved, but it was almost too late for Queen Anne.

There can be little doubt that Queen Anne’s choice to be in the inaugural class would be Bob Houbregs ’49. His accomplishments as All-City basketball and baseball player for Queen Anne are well known in Seattle history. Later he played college for the UW and professional basketball. Bob is the only player from our state in the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Sadly, we lost Bob on July 28, 2015. It was my honor to represent his family at the Washington Athletic Club luncheon when the awards were presented, as Bob’s wife, Ardis, is now living in Fayetteville, GA. These days, you don’t see many celebrity athletes whose long sports journey come front and center in such a humble manner. President’s Message

By Sherry (Peck) Moody ’66

Well, hello there, fellow Grizzlies! How are you? As

we leave the rainy season here in Seattle, I hope that some of you were visiting sunnier climes these last few months.

In case you missed it, our annual Spring Luncheon was held April 29th at the Seattle Yacht Club, sponsored by Kerry McMahan ’54, for which we are so very thankful for his continued support of both of our luncheons. Our theme was Century 21, in honor of 55 years since the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962. A big thank you to our Events chairperson, Jeri Samuelsen ’63, who put all of this together, but was ill and not able to be with us.

Our meals were delicious, and the company delightful. As we finishedour lunch, Vice President Kim Turner ’61 shared his memories and some of the history of Century 21. That certainly caused conversation, as we all remembered back to that summer of 1962. Kerry then led the singing of our alma mater and the fight song.

Our luncheons are always fun events that we all look forward to. If you haven’t been to one, our Fall Luncheon will be on October 21 at the Seattle Yacht Club starting at 11:30 a.m. A coupon can be found in this KUAY. You will also find acoupon for donating/supporting or updating your contact info. Because we are a non-profit organization, a y donation is tax deductible and much appreciated!

Donations are enthusiastically requested, as they sustain the Association. Board meetings are generally held each month and are open to all graduates. Phone Sherry (Peck) Moody ’66 at 206-282-3585 for details. See website for minutes. The KUAY is printed by PacificPublishing Co., Seattle. The QAHSAA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Halfway through the year already? It’s been a great one so far. Earlier this year I was chosen to be one of 10 people my company will send to Bolivia in the fall to build a bridge to help the communities of smaller towns gain better access to healthcare and education. I could not be more excited. Hope the year is treating everyone else well!

Speaking of support, we have openings on the QAHSAA board, so I would love to hear from you, if interested. As I have said before, we need help to keep the alumni association afloat, or itwill just disappear…Contact any board member…One of our board members, Glo (Gleason) Holcomb ’46, has informed the board that she will not be submitting her name for re-election this fall. “It is time for younger people to get involved.” She will leave a huge hole. She has been a board member since 1987. She has been president, events chair, and willingly available to pitch in wherever she could. A confidan e, telling us how to do and where to do things, Glo, you will be missed!

Our other major event will be our annual Picnic, which will once again be at Gas Works Park on August 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We still have monthly meetings at Aegis of Queen Anne at Rogers Park, 2900 3rd Ave. W., 98109, each 3rd Wed., at 7:00 p.m., so join us if you would like.

Have a fabulous day, everyone!

WHO’S NEWSCompiled By Kim R. Turner ’61

First, a correction to the item on the death of Coach Reese Lindquist – his son Mark Lindquist is still alive, and serves with honor as head of the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office. Er or caught by Russ Guppy ’65. Thanks, Russ – I misread an earlier item on Coach Lindquist, so the error was mine.

Fred Tatsuo Sato, football and wrestling coach at Queen Anne during its last decade, and afterward serving as coach elsewhere in the Seattle/Metro League, died April 17, 2017, at the age of 89. He was also a noted judo instructor and held a black belt in that sport. He helped guide the Grizzlies to their last city football title (Div. II) in 1980.

1940s: Marian (James) McCann ’41 is living with her husband Mike at their daughter’s home in Snohomish. Marian and Mike celebrated

their 50th wedding anniversary last August. Marian achieved fame as the fi st policewoman in the Edmonds Police Department, serving as the fi st female detective and receiving the Edmonds Jaycees Police Officerof the Year Award in 1969. She is an active Seahawks fan, having retired in 1982. She turned 94 last March! John Nordin ’43 died in April. John and Juanita have been mainstays at our luncheons and summer picnics. Glo (Gleason) Holcomb ’46 tells us that Lee Monteith ’47 gave a

clarinet performance for Mardi Gras at the Ballard Senior Center. His final number as “When the Saints Go Marching In,” which caused the attendees to get on their feet and march around the tables!

1950s: Bob Lamborn ’54 has been celebrating his notable birthdays – 65th, 70th, 75th, and 80th – by skydiving! Bob lives in Honolulu, HI and is a docent on the USS Missouri and at the USS Arizona Memorial. James Scott ’57 lives at the Island Point Retirement Community in North Bend, Oregon.

Gerry Bradley ’59 has a radio talk show on KLAY Radio 1180 AM in Tacoma, “Chit Chat with Mr. Chit Chat.” This is a short

program which airs Saturdays at 8:45-9:00 a.m. and 7:03 a.m. on Sundays. It’s also streamed. He’s been broadcasting for 18 years.

1960s: Richard Pearson ’60 who died last September, has been honored by his brothers Jim Pearson ’63 and Carl Pearson ’69 who have established a memorial scholarship in Richard’s name. Richard taught school, both junior and senior high, mostly in northwest Oregon. Helping students to understand math was his passion. The scholarship is for future teachers. The death of Wally Foote ’61 last fall brought numerous memories to friends. “Wally had leg surgery to make both of his legs the

same length. He had to wear a cast and was therefore freed from gym class, to the envy of his classmates who had to survive their hours of ‘terror’ from Coach Henkel! We were 13 at the time, and when Wally’s cast came off – his leg was covered in hair! Very cool!” This memory came from classmate and friend R. Barry Hood ’61. Jeff W. Pickard ’61 points out the need for our tax ID on the form for donations. Much easier to get the tax credits with that info. (Editor’s Note: The tax info is included in the acknowledgment letter every donor receives). Bonnie Allen ’62 is a ski instructor at White Pass. This past season she taught 308 students (as of April 13, 2017). She lives on the Washington coast. Rob Wesson ’62 retired from the US Geological Survey after 37 years in 2007. He has written a book about Charles Darwin, “Darwin’s First Theory,” released this April by Pegasus Books. Scott Dahlberg ’62 has deep Queen Anne roots. His great grandfather, Charles Wilhelm Dahlberg, served as Custodian at John Hay Elementary from 1905 until his retirement, as late as 1940. His story appears in the May 10, 2017 Queen Anne & Magnolia News. George Schofield ’6 has his second book for an August release, “Making Organizations Sustainably Successful”. His earlier work was “How Do I Get There From Here?:

Planning For Retirement When the Old Rules No Longer Apply.” Steve Myrvang ’66 has the third and final bookof his Reach Series, “A Beam

Reach.” The books are issued by Undercover Books, Gallows Bay, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where Steve lives.

Queen Anne Invitational Golf TourneyNeither rain, wind, sleet, hail or snow will keep the US Post Offic from its appointed rounds … however, some wind and steady rain did discourage approximately one third of the 29 players who began golfing n the Queen Anne Invitational Golf Tourney.

Saturday, April 22, dawned a bit dark and blustery at the Whitehorse Golf Course in Kingston, Washington. It was great to see “Old Timers” Bob Morris’58, Pete Werle ’58, Doug Knight ’52, Rob Thompson ’59 and Karl Kollen ’59 as well as younger players like Jim Bowe (son of Bruce ’62), Ole Carlson ’77, Mark Owen ’81, Gordon Capretto ’72, plus Ron and wife Chris Housh.

We had a great time at the Awards Ceremony, thanks to prizes provided by Jim Bowe (McCormick Foods) and Cory Rockey (Bad Alberts Grill – in Ballard). Roger Jensen ’61 emptied his “Golf Garage” with semi-valuable gifts to various golfers.

Annual MWOQA LuncheonWe are planning to have our Annual Luncheon and Awards ceremony on Tuesday, December 26 at Anthony’s Pier 66 at 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Don Lorentz ’60 at 206-948-4197 or Roger Jensen at 206-354- 5478. Validated (free) parking is available across the overpass at the Art Institute.

Fall GolfThe Bob Houbregs Queen Anne Golf Classic will be held at Whitehorse Golf Club in Kingston, WA on Sunday, September 17, 2017. We will check in after 10 a.m., with a “drop-in” shotgun start at noon.

The Fall outing will cost $85, which will include golf with cart, range balls and dinner. Due to a “no show” problem at prior events, we are asking that a pre-registration check of $60 per player be sent to Roger Jensen, c/o CB Bain Real Estate, 1200 Westlake Ave N #406, Seattle, WA 98109. We will need all registration to be complete prior to September 10th. We invite all QA Grizzlies and their friends to join us in honoring the memory of Bob Houbregs ’49, and in enjoying a day of fellowship and great golf on the links.

If you have any questions, call or text or email Roger at 206-354-5478 or rogerjensen at cbbain.com.

A Tale of Two City Grizzlies

Many QA Grizzlies have served Seattle as city employees. Here are two who spent most of their lives working for the city: Glenn Felix Hubbard ’74, who worked fi st in the Engineering Dept., and later transferred to the Parks and Recreation Dept., and Kim R. Turner ’61, who recently retired from Seattle Public Library.

Glenn was a Seattle native who grew up in the Central District, but who attended McClure Middle

School and Queen Anne High School, graduating from the latter in 1974. He spent almost 40 years in service with the city. During the last half of his career, his specialty was mentoring and working with children as a member of the Seattle Parks and Recreation Dept. He was honored by the city in having a room at the Rainier Beach Recreation Center named for him. Unfortunately, he was unable to enjoy the joys of retirement very long, dying last November at the age of 60. He was a fine xample of what it means to be a Grizzly.

Kim Turner, on the other hand, spent his entire career at Seattle Public Library’s downtown (or central) library. He was a tour guide on the

opening day of the former “new” library when it opened in early 1960, as one of a group of 16-year-old high school library workers who had been invited to participate in the opening ceremonies. Just over a year later, this Seattle native began working for the library, a month prior to graduation, a position he never left until just a few months ago, having served 55 years, 9 months and one day. His departure was not a surprise to his co-workers, but a legend had already grown around him: “There’s this guy who has worked for the library for 60 years or more...” Of course, it isn’t quite true, but there have been so many changes to library service during his tenure that it’s hard to realize that the printed book still remains the most checked out type of library material.

Turner’s years allowed him to assist in numerous programs at the library and meet numerous noted authors over the years. He says it was a career of fun and more free education in every aspect. The farewell party he attended was marked by a chocolate fountain and freshly-made lime Italian sodas, among various other treats. The number of younger employees he has assisted in the development of their skills is unknown, but, as with Glenn Hubbard, he made a difference.

Many of you reading this may have worked for the city. Please send in your own stories of which department(s) you worked and for how many years.

Gas Works Park On The Alert for Grizzlies August 27th!By Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

Seattle’s Gas Works Park will be on the lookout for an influx of oaming hungry QA Grizzlies of all ages. But no need to worry since the Grizzlies

will be well fed by burgers cooked on the grill from Al’s Hamburger Place, hot dogs, pop, water, tea and coffee, along with side dishes provided by QAHS Alumni Association members. And if you would like to help feed the QA Grizzlies feel free to bring a side dish or dessert, along with a fellow Grizzly. Donations are appreciated (another way of feeding the QA bears at the Alumni Summer Picnic).

We hope to see you Sunday August 27th, 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. to join QA Grizzlies of all years for feeding and fun. Not predicting the weather...only know that it will be daylight.

Gas Works Park is located at the north end of Lake Union. Parking is available (Meridian Ave. N. and N. Northlake Way). Visit www.qagrizzlies.org for directions.

Cash Only Bar & Raffle

2017 Spring Luncheon Salutes World’s FairBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

The QA Alumni Association annual spring luncheon was held on April 29th at the Seattle Yacht Club on a typical Seattle Weather color (Damp Gray) day, offset by the beautiful room the luncheon was held in.

Association VP Kim Turner ’61 led us down Century 21 memory lane to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair. I’ll do the math...it was 1962. And what a great fair it was, with the city today still enjoying its many venues still on the grounds. Miss the rides that were left for a few years even after the fair closed.

Kim surveyed the attending Grizzlies with great participation in answering questions of who rode the Bubbleator (now a greenhouse in the front yard at a private residence in Redondo Beach, WA. ), who got in free (answered particularly by one of the SYC wait staff and other Grizzlies not to be named), who saw Elvis (I still do) were some of the questions asked. Glad we were not questioned about Gracie Hansen’s since some of the alumni would have been old enough to be let in.

An amazing display of memorabilia from the fair was provided by Jackie (Moore) Zobrist ’63 and L.D. Zobrist ’62.

Winners of the raffle bas ets (one with Century 21 items from the Space Needle gift shop) were: Lee Monteith ’47, Sherry (Peck) Moody ’66, Kim Turner ’61, Alecia Nowak ’66, Meri (Gundram ) England ’58, Tim Moody ’66, and Ann Walther spouse of faculty member Dan Walther. Chris Backman ’66 won the 50/50 for $64.00.

Teachers in attendance were Dan Walther, Bob Morris and Bob Brubaker.

We look forward to seeing fellow Grizzlies at the fall luncheon at the Seattle Yacht Club on Saturday October 21st starting at 11:30 a.m. No weather prediction needed I’m sure.

Class of ’52 Annual LunchThe Class of 1952 annual President’s Day men’s lunch was held at Ivar’s Salmon House this year. Queen Anne High School rose in the distance. Looking another year older are (L to R): Karl House ‘51, Dick Vanderpool, Winston DeForest, John Privat, Terry Howard, Bob Boyd and Dick Bean.
