Who Do I Contact for Answers About My Child’s Education?1. If you have a question, your first contact should

be your child’s teacher. Please call the main office of your student’s school and they will put you in contact with your child’s teacher. Email addresses and phone extensions are also available online at www.schodack.k12.ny.us. Parent-teacher conferences, scheduled in the fall and spring, are great times to ask questions. You may also request a parent-teacher conference at any time.

2. If you are not satisfied after speaking with your child’s teacher, please contact your child’s principal.

3. If you are not satisfied after speaking with your child’s principal, please contact Superintendent Jason Chevrier at (518) 732-2297.

4. If you are not satisfied after speaking with Mr.

Chevrier, please contact the Board of Education by attending a Board meeting or emailing [email protected].

Who Do I Contact If My Child Will Miss School or Will Be Late?If your child will be absent or late, please call your school’s Health Office. Phone numbers are listed in this calendar. You can call the Health Office at any time, day or night. If we do not hear from you, we will place an automated phone call to ensure your child is accounted for and safe. If your student is absent for multiple days and we do not hear from you, our school nurses will make a personal call to check on your child. Please send a note with the rea-son for your child’s absence when your child returns to school.

Who Do I Contact for Answers About Student Transportation? Please contact the Transportation Department at (518) 732-2070.

Question?Whenever you have a question, please call your stu-dent’s school. While Schodack CSD utilizes many com-munication tools, a phone call or a meeting with a teacher or principal is often the best way to resolve questions about your child’s education. Commonly requested phone extensions are available in this calendar and online at www.schodack.k12.ny.us.

School District WebsiteCommunity members are encouraged to visit www.schodack.k12.ny.us for the most up-to-date informa-tion about the school district. The website is updated regularly and includes resources such as an online calendar, emergency announcements and stories about what students are learning.

eNewseNews is an email sent out every two weeks, sharing upcoming events, emergency announcements and other school information. Sign up by visiting www.schodack.k12.ny.us and clicking on “eNews”.

FacebookEnjoy stories and photos of the great things going on at Schodack CSD schools on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Schodack CSD. The social media site also provides reminders about upcoming events and emergency announcements.

TwitterEach school building, the district and the athletics depart-ment has its own Twitter account. The accounts provide announcements similar to the district Facebook page.

Many of our teachers and administrators also use Twitter to share what is going on in their classrooms. Visit www.schodack.k12.ny.us to see a list of teachers on Twitter.

Parent Portal and CanvasParents can follow their students’ education through the district’s Parent Portal. It offers parents a secure, online way to access attendance, grades and other student information. Canvas is a platform where Maple Hill students can communicate with teachers, find class materials, track assignments & due dates, find class meeting links and more. For more information on Parent Portal & Canvas, visit www.schodack.k12.ny.us.

Student PortalStarting in 6th grade, every student is provided his/her own Student Portal account. Similar to the Parent Portal, the Student Portal allows students to check their grades and other pertinent information. Students are encouraged to use the portal throughout Junior and Senior High School.

Automated Phone CallsSchodack CSD uses an automated phone system to call parents in the event of an emergency such as clos-ing early due to weather and to share other important information. Please verify that we have your correct contact information on file to ensure we can reach you by checking the Parent Portal or call the main office of your child’s school.

Dropping Off StudentsIf you drop off your child in the morn-ing, please use the designated parent drop off zones and do not leave your car unattended. For the safety of our students, please drive slowly and take extra care to look for students. Give yourself enough time to drop off your student safely. Please do not use desig-nated bus loops to drop off students.

Dropping Off Students After School StartsIf your student is going to be late for school, please provide a written excuse for the student’s tardiness. Students arriving late to school should report directly to the school’s main office. For more information, please see the student handbooks which are available online at www.schodack.k12.ny.us.

Please No Parking in Bus LoopPlease do not park your vehicle in the bus loop in front of school buildings. For the safety of our students, faculty and staff, it is imperative that bus loops be kept clear for emergency vehicles.

Please Drive CarefullyFor the safety of our students, we ask all visitors to please take extra cau-tion when driving on school grounds. Drop off location and parking lots can get quite busy so please adhere to the 15 MPH speed limit and watch care-fully for students. It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its signal lights are flashing.

STUDENT DROP OFFWho Do I Contact for Answers About Student Transportation? Please contact the Transportation Department at (518) 732-2070. Change in TransportationStudents cannot change their district transportation pick-up/drop-off locations on a day-to-day or week-to-week basis this year. For instance, if there is a day of the week that your student needs to be picked up or dropped off at a location that is different than their official designated pick-up/drop-off location, you will need to make your own transportation arrangement.

Requesting Someone Else Pick Up ChildIf someone other than a parent/guardian is picking up your child, you will need to use the PikMyKid app on the day of to delegate that person and call the school’s main office to let them know. That individual will also need to show photo identification in order to pick up your child.

Early Release RequestsIf your student needs to be excused early from school for illness or a medi-cal appointment, please submit a written request to the Main Office before the start of school. Parents are required to pick up students at the Main Office and sign them out for early dismissal.

School Bus SafetyTo ensure the safety of students, it is important that parents review the following bus safety rules with their children.• There will be extra protocols in place on district busses this year to

mitigate the spread of COVID-19. You can find these on the district website, www.schodack.k12.ny.us.

• Students must sit in seats at all times while riding the bus.• Eating and drinking are not allowed while riding the bus.• Talking loudly or making noise that could distract the bus driver

should be avoided.• All rules described in the district’s Code of Conduct should be followed. If these rules are violated repeatedly, a student may be suspended from school transportation. Parents would then be responsible for trans-porting their child to and from school each day, per New York State Education Law.

A Vision for the Schodack Central SchoolsThe Schodack Central School District offers a small nurturing setting that will expand the educational, cultural, and social opportunities for our children and adult citizens through the use of thought-provoking experiences, high-quality resources, and technol-ogy. The community will be engaged in the life of the schools and, in return, the schools will serve the com-munity through the use of their facilities and resources. The quality of life will be enriched through access to adult education, college and job related educational opportunities, as well as social opportunities and sup-ports. The whole community will proudly celebrate academic, cultural, competitive and social successes that stem from our schools. The resulting high quality of life will attract citizens who enjoy sharing their talents with neighbors and the school.

Students of Schodack Central will graduate with strong academic competencies from a challenging curricu-lum, and will have opportunities to earn credits from our educational partners. They will have learned to value societal and global diversity, communicate effec-tively, collaborate by working in teams, and demon-strate self reliance and self responsibility. They will develop lifelong learning skills grounded in their curi-osity, creativity, and problem solving skills. Their citi-zenship skills will be enhanced through community and peer to peer service, and a commitment to civility. They will be prepared socially and ready to make healthy productive choices. Their exposure to technology and knowledge of how to use it will also prepare them for an ever-evolving future.

Schodack Central School District students will be nurtured and taught by passionate and caring teachers, staff, administrators, and board members all of whom serve as good role models, in a district that is exem-plary, innovative, community involved, and a valued asset to our entire greater community.

To develop our students to become active, reflective, creative learners. In our schools, they will engage in rewarding work and practice behaviors that are intelligent in both an academic and a practical sense. Students will develop the attitudes, skills and understandings that will allow them to fulfill their potential and to function successfully in their individual and social roles.

M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T

The Board of Education consists of nine community members elected to serve three-year terms of office without pay. The Board acts as a collective body to establish the policies under which the Schodack Central School District operates. The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for administering the school program within the context of these policies. The Board typically holds meetings on the third Thursday of most months at 6 p.m. in the High School library. Please see this calendar or visit www.schodack.k12.ny.us for a list of meeting dates and locations. Board agendas and meeting minutes are also available online or by calling the district office at (518) 732-2297. If you have a question for the Board of Education, please attend a meeting, call District Clerk Michele Reickert at (518) 732-2297 option 1, or email [email protected] (your email will be sent to all Board members).

BOARD OF EDUCATION

Page 6: Schodack 21-22 Calendar - Revised September 16, 2021

Dignity for All Students ActAll students have a right to attend school in a safe, wel-coming and caring environment. To help ensure all schools support a school climate where students can learn and focus, New York State passed the Dignity for All Students Act in 2012 which created procedures to ensure every school environment is free of discrimination and harass-ment. This includes school property such as playgrounds, athletic fields, school buses and school-sponsored events. Schodack CSD fully supports the Dignity for All Students Act. The Board of Education has adopted a policy to help prevent student harassment and bullying. That pol-icy along with additional information is available at www.schodack.k12.ny.us. If parents have any concerns about harassment or bul-lying, please report them immediately to your student’s principal so we can investigate the concern.

Emergency Closing AnnouncementsIf the district needs to close school because of an emergency or inclement weather, an announcement will be made on our district website, Facebook page, Twitter account, eNews, text alerts and local television and radio stations. If the district needs to close school early, an automated phone call will be made to all designated student emergency contacts. Please ensure your Emergency Contact Information is up-to-date to ensure you receive these phone calls.

Safety DrillsTo help ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff, all Schodack schools practice safety drills throughout the school year with the assistance of police and emergency responders. Most safety drills are unannounced to better prepare schools in the event of an emergency. If you have a question about safety drills, please contact your student’s principal.

Free or Reduced School Lunch ProgramUnder USDA guidance, SCSD will again offer free breakfast and free lunch to every student for the 2021-22 school year. The district will also continue to collect and process free and reduced-price meal applications to establish eligibility for Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT) only. All applications that will be collected will be used to certify students for free and reduced-price meals, specifically for purposes of PEBT only.
