Custom cabs

Schindler Elevator Corporation knows elevator interiors like no one else in the industry. Over the last few years we havesuccessfully provided kits to upgrade over 10,000 cabs all over North America. Our Schindler pre-designed models seem toplease almost everyone. But for those looking for something a little different, we have custom interior options.

The processOccasionally, a Schindler sales representative is asked by an architect,designer or elevator consultant to price a cab that has been carefullyspecified to blend with the overall scope of a project. When thishappens, it is the perfect time to set up a design session with one ofour experienced, knowledgeable and competent staff. They will walkyou through the design process using highly-customized 3D modelingsoftware. Video conferencing is easy, requires no special hardware,software or cameras (although you may use one if you like).

Schindler will price the cab as originally specified and also provide anyvalue-engineered alternatives that were created during the designsession. These alternatives will typically cost 20% less than thespecified cab and will be easier to install and maintain. Often, thesecabs are accepted as a practical alternative.

However, when clients choose to go forward with their original specified design, Schindler turns on its manufacturingexpertise and becomes the specifier’s best friend. The results have been spectacular. Some of our most beautiful cabs havebeen produced in partnership with first-rate architects and designers. In fact, this collaborative approach has been sosuccessful, that a LEED Accredited Professional is on staff to further enhance our ability to turn your ideas into reality.

Most cabs have existing wall panels, ceilings and handrails. If the weight of those items closely matches the weight of thenew items listed here, no adjustments to your system are necessary. However, if there is a significant weight difference, orif there are presently no panels in your cab, the impact of the weight must be considered, as should the super-light paneloption (additional cost).


Modular Downlight CeilingThis option combines the efficiency and light weightof the Frame Ceiling with the style of modular lighting.The aluminum ceiling frame is devided into six sections(nine for larger elevators); each section contains a fire-rated panel faced with plastic laminate.

Handrails and bumpers

Handrails are through-bolted at our factory, makingSchindler elevator handrails among the most secure inthe industry. Handrails are mounted 32” above thefloor, unless otherwise requested, and meet or exceedADA specifications. Standard handrails and bumpershave returned ends for added safety and durability, andset screws for access.

Bumpers are an option and, like our handrails, theyare securely through-bolted at the factory. Bumpersare mounted 12” above the floor, unless otherwiserequested.

Handrails and bumpers are available in satin stainlesssteel, satin bronze, mirror stainless steel or mirrorbronze.

Interlocking panelsThe patented interlocking panel joint is how the panelscome together. As each layer is installed in the cab, thenext layer hides the screws from the layer below. Unliketraditional hanging panels, no clips or hardware otherthan the provided screws, are necessary.

Top capOnce all the panels are securely mounted into the cabshell, the walls are finished with an aluminum top cap.This piece features an integrated pad hook channel,which eliminates the visual nuisance and the added costof having pad buttons installed on your panels.

Protect your new cab interiorwith superior vinyl pads withpre-attached pad hooks. Therugged polyester thread through-out will stand up to years of use.Matching, heavy duty vinyl bind-ings are added for good looksand extra durability on all edges.

CeilingsThe right ceiling can dramatically affect the appearanceof a cab interior. Schindler offers four standard ceilingoptions, with many variations. See pages 38 and 39 fordetails. Custom ceilings are also available, see page 36.

Panel replacementThere are several reasons why a building owner wouldwant to change one or more panels down the road:damage, vandalism or possibly a change in the build-ings appearance. With the Schindler Elevator Interiorspatented interlocking panel system, replacement forany reason is fast and easy.

Pre-attachedhandrailsYet another benefit ofour system is that allhandrails and bumperscome pre-attached andthrough-bolted fromour factory. This makesthem the most safeand secure in the in-dustry! See page 40and 41.

Toe kicksToe kicks (layer 1) prevent damage to the interior sur-face material by providing a small buffer zone at thebottom of the cab and are available in black powdercoated steel, satin stainless steel or satin bronze. Justabove the toe kicks are the aluminum toe kick bindersthat protect the bottom edge of the panels. This binderis what the first panel (layer 2) rests in, and provides theventilation necessary to meet elevator code.

FlooringMost building owners prefer to select flooring thatmatches other floors in their building. One importantreminder: if new flooring will add significant weight (ce-ramic tile or stone, for example) be sure to consult withyour Schindler representative beforehand, as the weightmay impact the elevator system.

Panel binderFor cabs with side opening doors, the visible paneledges near the door(s) are protected with aluminumpanel binders. The angle on the panel binder will deflectany objects that may otherwise damage the panels. Thisis yet another feature not found with traditional hang-ing panels.

Front returns and doorsDecide if your front return wall and doors require atten-tion. You can elect to keep them as is, refinish them orreplace them. A Schindler Elevator Interiors panel canalso be applied to most return walls.

FixturesYou can upgrade the car operating panel, position indi-cator, telephone and other fixtures to more modern de-signs. Often, they can introduce new functionality at thesame time.
