33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

[Good and Faithful Servants Await the Lord]

Recently the equity markets have been on a tear with all three ma-jor indexes reaching record highs. For the bearish investors they have been anticipating market correction so they might have parked their money in cash and missed out the recent gain, but other investors believe that the bull has more room to run. They are not afraid of taking on invest-ment risks. As a result their in-vestment returns have paid off decently. I am not a financial ad-visor and am pretty much finance illiterate. However, today’s Gos-pel reading makes me think about my “God-given portfolio” and how I have put the entrusted talents to work while waiting for the return of the master. In the Gospel, a wealthy master gives his possessions to each of his three servants with no specific instructions. Upon his return the owner sees that two of the three servants have invested and dou-bled the money. Nice! The mas-ter was delighted with the returns

and praised these two as good and faithful servants. These ser-vants were like the bullish inves-tors who took risks and were re-warded with the talents as well as a “share of the master’s joy.” The third servant was the focus of the parable. Instead of investing the given talent he was careful and buried his master’s money under-ground to preserve its value. When challenged as to why he did not invest it, he responded by characterizing the master as a demanding, harsh and unjust man who instilled fear in other people. The master was disap-pointed and upset with this ser-vant not because of the negative characterization but because of his fear and inactivity. For this he was called wicked and lazy and was condemned and thrown into the darkness where there will be suffering. This parable invites us to be pro-active and to take good care of the gifts and resources that God has generously entrusted to us—our God-given portfolio. The Lord has given us 24 hours a day. How have we used our time to build up his Kingdom of hope, love and peace? Our God has given us our life and health. Have we taken good care of our-

selves as the temples of the Holy Spirit? Have we squandered it with toxic substances and offen-sive contents online and on TV? The master gave us the seed of the Gospel. Have we shared the messages of Christ with others or have we suffocated it and let it die? The Lord entrusted us with our family and community, but how have we nourished and cared for them? The master gave us the earth, the rivers, the lakes and living creatures, but have we been responsible stewards by caring for them or have we abused these God-given re-sources by polluting our environ-ment and driving the living crea-tures to extinction? As we reach the end of our liturgi-cal year the readings invite us to think about the Parousia (the sec-ond coming) where the Lord will return. St. Paul in the second reading reminds us that this time will come unexpectedly “like a thief in the night”. He reminds us to be sober and alert. Meanwhile we shouldn’t await the return of the master in fear and inactivity. We need to be active and utilize all our God-given talents to build up His kingdom of love, peace and justice.

Trilingual Thanksgiving Mass Thursday, November 23, 2017 @ 9 AM

On Thanksgiving day our parish will be coming to-gether to celebrate our annual trilingual mass. This

mass will be celebrated in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. In the spirit of Thanksgiving we are all

invited to attend this special mass.

Donations for the needy

Due to the lack of space to store large quantities of food, we are encouraging parishioners to give monetary or gift card donations rather then the

usual food donations at the annual collection during the Thanksgiving day mass. The Christian Service

Volunteers will make sure that these funds are used to help the less fortunate in our community.

The Giving Tree

Help make Christmas a little merrier for the less fortunate in our community by choosing to sponsor a family or child. Let them know that they haven’t been forgotten and share with them the love of Jesus Christ.

To do so please take a tag from the giving tree. On this tag you will find a single child or a family of 2 or more children. We ask that you provide at least one new gift per child and if possible, food for the family. Please bring your NEW unwrapped gift(s) and/or food with this tag to the parish center by Dec. 10, 2017. Thank you for helping those in need have a Merrier Christmas.

The giving tree will be in the Church, as of Thanksgiving day.

Chúa Nhật 33 Quanh Năm ngày 19 tháng 11 năm 2017 – A
