SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

We wish you a blessed Easter Season!

Thank you, Peggy! I was so sad to hear that Peggy Dupree will be leav-ing us in a month as our Parish Administrative Associate to take a position at Immaculate Heart in New Melle, which will be a 5 minute drive rather than 45 minutes. She has so beautifully and lovingly served our Borromeo Family for almost 30 years. She truly is a Saint: Christ-like in her self-sacrifice and so competent and full of faith. We will have a Mass of Thanksgiving for her on June 12 at the 10am Mass followed by a reception in which we can all say: THANK YOU, PEGGY, & WE LOVE YOU. Please let me know quickly if you or anyone you know would be interested in serving our parish in this position which includes:

Hospitality on phone/email Bulletin—weekly Parish and Sacramental Scheduling Recording of Records, contributions, and tuition and so much more support to all our staff and

2016 Annual Catholic Appeal Peace Be With You

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” (John 14:27) These fa-miliar words from the Gospel of John invite us to reflect on the great need for peace in our world today. The Annual Catholic Appeal is an invitation to reflect Christ’s peace to a world in need. Thousands of people turn to the Archdiocese for hope and healing every day. In our parishes and apostolates, they experience the light and love of Jesus. The Appeal is also the single most important annual charitable undertaking in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, because it helps the Church respond to the genuine needs of all people. The apostolates funded by the Ap-peal directly or indirectly affect everyone throughout all counties of our Archdiocese. In 2015, the ACA directly benefited St. Charles Bor-romeo Parish and School thru:

$4,491 for Teachers Professional Growth $5,310 in Tuition Subsidy for Paul VI Institute Right Start Student and Parent classes were conduct-

ed for our Parish School and PSR by the Respect Life Apostolate.

Members of our parish attended the Catholic Wom-en for Christ and Catholic Men for Christ Confer-ences, sponsored by the office of Laity & Family Life.

Couples from our parish participated in “Joy-Filled Marriage,” the Archdiocesan marriage preparation class, sponsored by the Office of Laity and Family Life.

Together, we are building up a community of peace. As missionary disciples, we give of ourselves—offering Christ’s hope and joy to the least of our brothers and sisters. This Easter season, let us experience Christ’s peace, and joyfully share that peace with everyone we meet.

It is essential that every Catholic participate by contributing something to the Appeal. Please take the time after Mass TODAY to pick up your card and make a payment or pledge. Your gift, added to all the others, will do more good than you could ever imagine.

Good News of Jesus Working in His Borromeo Family

Congratulations to Beth Wehmeier, life long member of St. Charles Borromeo, who was recently named Dis-trict Teacher of the Year by St. Charles City School Dis-trict. She teaches 3rd grade at Coverdell Elementary. She has also taught 4th and 5th grades there. Beth is an excellent educator and a very caring, nurturing adult in the lives of her students. She takes her Catholic values with her to work every day, making a difference in the lives of the children she teaches. Katy Smith, another great Borromeo parishioner, was named Teacher of the Year at Blackhurst Elementary School in the St. Charles City School District. Congratu-lations to Katy on this recognition. Our prayer of thanks to both of these wonderful Bor-romeo parishioners who are making a positive difference in our community and with the children who live here.

Grateful Thanks A big Thank you and prayers for Virginia McGuire who generously left Borromeo in

her will, which has so far given SCB $18,309! Knights of Columbus—St. Charles Council for rais-

ing and donating $3000 to our SCB School with much hard work of love!

My Faith Journey—Don Richardson (a new Borromeo Catholic—Easter 2016)

St. Charles Borromeo Prayer Tree: 928-2970 or [email protected]

Before RCIA I only saw reasoning in praying to God. I thought of God as a main power, and I thought if God is the main power then why would I pray to anything else. But once I prayed to Jesus I found this easiness to connect with Him. It felt as if Jesus understood what I had been through. Also, I can read about how Jesus lived. Jesus was a man just like I am, so I find it easier to follow Jesus’ lifestyle, compared to following the laws of God. I see God as more of a father figure. It seems like God will punish you for your wrongdoings, and make you think about what you did wrong. Jesus will sit with you and talk out what you did wrong, why you did it, and how to prevent it. I see God as a father and Jesus as a compan-ion. Also, I have been able to see the Holy Spirit. I used to never know what the Holy Spirit was. I feel the Holy Spirit is always trying to come through you, but you must let it through, it won’t just come. The Holy Spirit comes through the body, that is why doing exercises can help you feel relaxed, being relaxed brings you out of the flesh and into the spirit. Any form of healthy expression brings forth the spirit. It could simply be writing. Writing empties the mind and leaves only the spirit to speak. That

is why we shouldn’t live from the neck up. Living in your brain only holds back emotion and represses thoughts and actions. Get out of your head and express. Sing, dance, run, paint, these are all expression. Art is nothing until you put your meaning to the art. Express your thoughts, just like Jesus expresses His love.

The challenges I faced with my rela-tionship with God is breaking the barrier of stopping what I am doing to talk to Him. I find that I only want do what I want to do, but when I talk to God I like talking to God. I feel the only challenge fac-ing my relationship with God is my not sacrificing or devoting enough to Him, because everything you give to God He gives back.

Wanting to pursue my First Com-munion led me to RCIA. I always wanted to have Communion. Nothing seemed more amazing than being able to receive Jesus Christ.

I learned that I still have a lot to learn about, God, the Church, Jesus, philosophy, and the people around me. I learned what God and Jesus mean to me, and I learned how everybody in the Church is differ-ent, with different views, different lives, different upbringings, but we all want to be closer to God and

bring other people towards God with us. Everybody in the Church wants to make a bigger church com-munity.

I have found that RCIA has been beneficial because it has helped me to share faith with others.

I do not know where I am in my faith journey. I do not know how far my faith journey will go, so I cannot say where I am at. I believe God has great plans for me, and I don’t know what they are. All I know is to follow my heart and conscience, and God and that will lead me to what my calling is. I find if I choose a certain path, I will never be able to take the best path for me. I do not want to take a path that is a straight arrow, I want to follow a path that goes through all kinds of directions no matter how good or bad. The only true way to take a good path is have experience with everything, because that is how you learn. I will take the path and not let the path take me.

I see a path of becoming closer to Jesus and understanding Jesus after receiving Him weekly. I believe it will enhance our relationship and help me through more experiences.

Pope Francis Speaks to our Hearts Unity is the Work of the Spirit

When we are the ones who try to create diversity and close ourselves up in what makes us different and other, we bring division. When we are the ones who want to build uni-ty in accordance with our human plans, we end up creating uniformity, standardization. But if instead we let ourselves be guided by the Spirit, richness, variety, and diversity never become a source of conflict, because He impels us to experi-ence variety within the communion of the church.

The St. Charles Borromeo Journey 1867—1885

Late in the pastorate of Peter Verhaegen, he had several improvements made to the stone church. He added a low tower to the front of the structure, and restored the roof. Inside he added curtains to the church windows, and overhauled the organ. However, these improvements only delayed the inevitable. The stone church was simply too small for the congregation, and had been since great waves of foreign im-migrants began to settle in the St. Charles area. The creation of St. Peter’s parish in 1850 had merely slowed Bor-romeo’s growth. In addition, by 1869 there was little empty

ground left around the stone church, which had stood nearly alone when built in the late 1820s. Shortly after Verhaegen’s death, the parish began preparing to move liturgical services up the hill to Decatur and Fourth Street, part of which had served as the parish cemetery. This site is the exact same location where our present church now sits. Father John Roes stationed at Borromeo since 1867 succeeded Fr. Verhaegen as pastor. He became the driving force behind the move. Although the parish lacked comprehensive funding for the construction of a new larger church, on May 9, 1869 Archbishop Kenrick laid the cornerstone for a new structure. Contributions continued trickling in, so that by the end of 1870 the brick church was roofed in. Funding then slowed for a while, as did construction. An entry in the Jesuit’s record states for 1871: “This year the church tower is nearly built up; but for want of money, the church remains in the same state, because superiors have decided it is better to delay work on it than to be loaded with a debt.” The following year the still-incomplete structure was consecrated. On October 13, 1872, the archbishop’s coadjutor, Pat-rick J. Ryan, dedicated the church under the protection of St. Charles Borromeo.

In this Gospel, Jesus prepared his disciples for his return to God. Jesus promised them that the Holy Spirit would live within them and provide strength and courage. The Spirit would always be available to help them as a coun-selor and advocate. Through the Spirit, they would recall the words and teachings of Jesus and even come to un-derstand these things in a way that they could not be-fore. In addition the disciples would receive peace from the Spirit. The peace of the Spirit would be a “shalom” kind of peace which provided a special inner serenity.

This reading is especially helpful when parents have to explain death to their children. Jesus told his disciples that if they truly loved him, they would be happy that he was going to be with his Father. While the words are sometimes hard, even for us as we face a loss through death, our faith lets us know that Jesus and our loved ones are truly happy in a way we can’t fully understand. Jesus offered the Spirit to the disciples because he knew the days ahead would be hard for them. It is that same Spirit that helps us and our families when we face hard days following a death. The greatest news in this reading is that Jesus will be back for us!

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be with us in the world until he returned for us. Take a look in your parish bulletin, local newspaper, or at school, work, or in your neighborhood and list as many examples as you can where you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world. If you notice someone on your list who needs to be re-minded that the Spirit is active in their lives, call or visit them and let Jesus’ presence be seen through you.

Easter Season Reflection

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All the Difference

“...do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

Our limited human understanding cannot begin to un-derstand the immense power of God. Instead of trust-ing in God, we think we can control every outcome. Do you want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. The next time worry, anxiety or fear creeps in, thank God for all He has given you and trust He has a better plan for you.

We pray that the next time worry, anxiety or fear enters our life, our first thought is to thank God for all he has given us.

Joke of the Week I love the self-checkout aisle at my supermarket. The only problem comes when I leave an item on the scanner too long and the robo-voice scolds, “Please move your whole milk [or whatever] to the bagging ar-ea.” Ordinarily, I just ignore it. But on my last shop-ping trip, I moved fast when the voice began shouting, “Please move your pork butt.”
