As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

-Fr. William Dotson

Las Posadas This Saturday, December 2, there will be a Las Posadas procession on Main Street St. Charles. This event reenacts Mary and Joseph searching for a room at the inn. The procession begins at 6:30pm at the intersection of S. Main St. and Boone’s Lick Rd. and continues to the Main Pavilion at Frontier Park. This event brings together members of various churches and organizations in the area to witness to the true reason for Christmas. As we prepare for the Advent season, all parishioners are invit-ed to participate in this beautiful event.

Advent Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. In Advent, we prepare for to celebrate how Christ came in Bethlehem, but we also recall that Christ will come again and our need to prepare for His second coming. Christ’s coming is not just a historical event. He will come in the future, and He comes to us in various ways each and every day, most especially in the Eucharist. Advent marks both the period of preparation for Christ-mas and also the beginning of the liturgical year. It is inter-esting that we don’t begin the liturgical calendar with a big celebration, but with a period of prayer, longing, and preparation. As we begin this Advent season and new li-turgical year, how are we preparing to receive Christ in our life? Is our hope in Christ, or have we placed our hope in the things of this world and lost our desire for Christ’s coming? It is common for people to make New Year’s resolutions on January 1. As we begin a new liturgical year, perhaps we should ask ourselves: what spiritual reso-lutions can I make to be more ready to receive Christ?

End of the Year Gifts If you plan on making an end-of-the-year donation to the parish, please be aware of the following law. Ac-cording to the IRS, for the donation to be applied to 2017, you must either deliver it to the parish office be-fore December 31, or, if you are mailing it, it must be postmarked by December 31. Any gift delivered to the parish after January 1 or postmarked later than January 1 will appear in your 2018end-of-the-year statement. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Our Saint of the Week- -St. Andrew– Apostle-

St. Andrew, also known as Andrew the Apostle, was a Christian Apostle and the older brother to St. Peter.

According to the New Testament, Andrew was born in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee during the early first century. Much like his younger brother, Simon Peter, Andrew was also a fisherman. Andrew's very name means strong and he was known for having good social skills.

In the Gospel of Matthew, it is said Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and saw Andrew and Simon Peter fishing. It is then he asked the two to become disciples and "fishers of men."

In the Gospel of Luke, Andrew is not initially named. It describes Jesus using a boat, believed to be solely Simon's, to preach to the multitudes and catch a large amount of fish on a night that originally was dry. Later, in Luke 5:7, it mentions Simon was not the only fisherman on the boat, but it is not until Luke 6:14 that there is talk of Andrew being Simon Pe-ter's brother.

However, the Gospel of John tells a separate story, stating Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. When Jesus walked by one day, John the Baptist stated, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" It is then that Andrew and another made the decision to follow Jesus.

Little else is said about Andrew in the Gospels, but it is believed Andrew was one of the closer disciples to Jesus. It was he who told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes, according to John 6:8. When Philip wanted to speak to Je-sus about Greeks seeking him, he spoke to Andrew first. Andrew was also present at the last supper.

Per Christian tradition, Andrew went on to preach the Good News around the shores of the Black Sea and throughout what is now Greece and Turkey. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion in Patras. He was bound, rather than nailed, to a cross, as is described in the Acts of Andrew. He was crucified on a cross form known as "crux decussata," which is an X-shaped cross or a "saltire." Today this is commonly referred to as "St. Andrew's Cross." It is believed Andrew requested to be crucified this way, because he deemed himself "unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus."

Andrew's remains were originally preserved at Patras. However, some believe St. Regulus, who was a monk at Patras, received a vision telling him to hide some of Andrew's bones. Shortly after Regulus' dream, many of Andrew's relics were transferred to Constantinople by order of Roman emperor Constantius II around 357. Regulus later received orders in a second dream telling him to take the bones "to the ends of the earth." He was to build a shrine for them wherever he shipwrecked. He landed on the coat of Fife, Scotland.

In September 1964, Pope Paul VI had all of St. Andrew's relics that ended up in Vatican City sent back to Patras. Now, many of Andrew's relics and the cross on which he was martyred are kept in the Church of St. Andrew in Patras.

St. Andrew is venerated in Georgia as the first preacher of Christianity in that territory and in Cyprus for having struck the rocks creating a gush of healing waters upon landing on the shore.

His saltire cross is featured on the flag of Scotland and is represented in much of his iconography. He is commonly portrayed as an old man with long white hair and a beard, often holding the Gos-pel book or a scroll.

St. Andrew is the patron saint of fishermen and singers. He is also the patron saint to several coun-tries and cities including: Scotland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Patras and his feast day is cele-brated on November 30.

Feastday: November 30 Patron of Fishermen, singers, Scotland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Patras Birth: Early 1st Century Death: Mid-to late 1st Century on November 30.

Giving Tree 2017 Announcements

Giving Tree is the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul’s effort to help make Christmas special for families in need within our par-ish boundaries in our local community. Everyone can participate! Here’s how it works and how you can help: Refer: Families who live in our parish boundaries referred by school personnel, parishioners, or self referred and

must demonstrate that they are a family in crisis/need by SVDP. Donate: In November, St. Charles Borromeo classes hold their annual Food Drive. Food items gathered by classes

become our Christmas food baskets. There is enough to provide multiple meals for the holiday season. Adopt a Family: Families, friends and coworkers adopt a full family and spoil them with minimal gifts plus extra

special items. Contact Mary Medina if you are interested in adopting a full family. Any size family can be adopted. Pick Ornaments: Giving Trees go up in the Narthex on November 18th, giving you an opportunity to choose items

(ornaments) off the tree to shop for and wrap. All wrapped gifts need to be returned to church no later than December 10th SVCP and Mini Vinnies sort these packages and ready them for pick up on December 21st this

year. Donate: Some parishioners want to participate, but are unable to shop for items! A check

made out to SVDP and noted for Giving Tree is earmarked for meat purchased for meal, as well as missing gift items.

Hope everyone will participate as we join together to brighten the Christmas season for those less fortunate in our community. Mary Medina [email protected] or 636-699-9427

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

November 26, 2017-Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Today as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear Jesus say,” whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Knowing that we find the face of Christ in the poor, this month through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 127 families with rent and utility bills, serv-ing 385 meals for the homeless/hungry , and volunteering 291 hours of help/assistance to neighbors in need. Thank You!

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treas-

ure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

Contributions for November 18/19, 2017

These numbers were not available at the time this bulletin went to press Due to holiday schedules for printing of the bulletin, we might be running late a few times during the holiday and Christmas season. We at the parish are sorry for this inconvenience caused by early bulletin printing schedules. Next week’s bulletin will have both the 19th and the 26th of November’s totals. Thank You for your Patience.

St. Charles Borromeo Memorial Gift Cards

We have available in our Narthex, church office, and at our local funeral homes, Memorial Gift Cards. You can designate your gift to our Capital Improve-ment Fund, SCB School’s Help-A-Student Tuition Aid, SCB St. Vincent DePaul Society, or any other SCB pro-gram or project. When you are making arrangements for the funeral and visitation, you may ask your funeral director to set these cards out. Or, when you are going to the visita-tion, you may pick up a card in the box in our Narthex. I would bet many of our beloved Borromeo mem-bers who pass on would love to have their Memorial Gifts given to SCB Parish because they (and we all) are so proud of our wonderful Parish Family here.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us that we will be judged on only one thing: the acts of mercy we have shown to the least among us. Jesus identifies with the least ones; thus we serve Jesus whenever we serve one of the least ones. The Church calls the actions that Jesus de-scribed in today’s Gospel the Corporal Works of Mercy. These works are to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to bury the dead, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick and imprisoned, and to give alms to the poor. In these actions we show God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. As you gather as a family, recall the list of the Corporal Works of Mercy. Talk about some concrete ex-amples of how your family might do these actions in your community and then discuss why it is important that we do these things. Read Matthew 25:31-46. Ask: Why does Jesus say we ought to do these works of mercy? (Because whenever we show mercy to another person, we show mercy to Jesus himself.) Choose one Corporal Work of Mercy that your family will act upon this week. Jesus tells us the story of the final judgment to show us what kind of a king he is. He is not a king inter-ested in power and glory but in serving the needs of oth-ers. Since Jesus is our king and we are his loyal sub-jects, we strive to imitate him and to live according to his will. Conclude in prayer together asking Jesus for the help needed to serve him through the people around us, especially the least ones among us. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
