The artwork on the front cover is an original hand-drawn work by Paige McKee, who was a
3rd grade student at St. Mary Catholic School during the 2016-2017 school year. Paige’s
artwork was selected from over 100 images submitted for the Art Contest as part of Shangri
La Gardens’ Eco Fest event. Congratulations, Paige!

Statement of Education Goals and Philosophy
Shangri La offers a safe environment where students can connect with and develop a relationship with nature.
Whether we are teaching school children, families, or adults, we
aim to incorporate the following pedagogical principles into our programs: Hands-on Experiential Total immersion Small group experiences If you aren’t doing, you aren’t learning Teacher as guide and facilitator, not as lecturer
Structured and safe environment to explore the outdoors Encourage students to think for themselves
We try to do what teachers cannot easily do…
take students into the swamp, forest, meadow or bayou; and provide activities that incorporate kinesthetic and fine motor skills.
In an effort to create a well-rounded program, we use a three-tiered approach when we
design our lessons. In each lesson, we aspire to integrate the following concepts:
Natural History: name the local flora and fauna and provide “fun facts” for each
Ecology: show relationships between flora and fauna, between abiotic and biotic factors, and how humans fit into
the ecosystem
Sustainability: consider changes that we can make in our behavior so that our actions have a positive impact on
ecosystems instead of a negative impact
“I love the fact that the students receive hands on learning. They were really engaged!”
6th Grade Teacher, West Orange-Stark Middle School
Before you register for Shangri La Field Trips….
Schools in Orange County attend for free if scheduling permits, including busing to/
from Shangri La.
Schools outside of Orange County attend for free if scheduling permits, but must
provide and pay for their own transportation.
Each classroom may register for one (1) date and time slot only.
No one is guaranteed registration for a field trip to Shangri La.
Guidelines for Field Trip Registration
Orange County teachers may register starting at 7:00 a.m., August 14, 2017.
Teachers outside of Orange County may register beginning at 7:00 a.m., August 28,
2017
Please use the registration form on our website at www.shangrilagardens.org. When
you click the “Submit” button, your registration form will be automatically emailed to
our scheduler, Jamie Massa. If you do not complete all of the required infor-
mation, your request will not be forwarded.
If you are unsure whether your registration was submitted, please send an email to
Jamie Massa at [email protected].
After receiving your request, Shangri La will send a confirmation email with the date
and time of your scheduled field trip.
If you do not receive a confirmation email within 2 weeks, check with us to ensure we
received your request. If you do not receive a confirmation from Shangri La,
please do not plan to attend.
Did You Know… There are around 200 different owl species.
Thanks to the support of The Stark Foundation, the education programs at Shangri La
are free for you and your students.
While you’re at Shangri La….
Students with bee allergies must carry their epi-pen with them at all times. Our gar-
den programs are marked with a caution sign because we have a working beehive in
our Children’s Garden. However, stinging insects (including bees, wasps, hornets,
and ants) are everywhere at Shangri La.
Students, teachers, and parent chaperones must wear closed-toed shoes and
shoes with a closed heel (no sandals, flip flops, etc.).
Most of our programs have a rainy-day/indoor alternate lesson plan; therefore,
most programs will be conducted, rain or shine. The indoor version requires students
to walk from building to building. Please make sure students dress appropriately.
Please provide name tags for your students.
We recommend that all students carry a water bottle with them during the
field trip (no soda or sugar drinks).
Some of the programs include a 1/2 hour break for lunch. If you register for
one of these programs, make sure students bring a sack lunch. (No soda, sug-
ar drinks, or gum.)
If more than one class is coming from your school, be sure to separate the
lunches by class. Classes usually eat lunch separately.
If the program does not include a lunch break, your students may stay after or
arrive early to enjoy a sack lunch in our student picnic area. If you choose to do
this, make sure your students bring a sack lunch. Please let us know in advance so
we can reserve our picnic area for you.
Parent Chaperones For safety reasons, Shangri La requires 1 adult for every 10 students, plus one
extra. For example, if you have 20 students in your class, you should bring 3
adults, including teachers and parents. Exception: one-on-one aides.
Please make sure parent chaperones do not bring younger siblings/children or
strollers.
Ensure parent chaperones arrive with the students. Parent chaperones must stay
with the class at all times.
Shangri La is open to the public. It is our policy that they are not allowed to interact
with their child or any other children participating in the school program.
Did You Know… Owls are active at night (nocturnal).
Bus Arrangements
Teachers must make all bus arrangements.
Schools in Orange County will have your transportation costs reimbursed by the Stark
Foundation. Your transportation department should submit invoices for bus reimbursement
at the end of each semester; no later than January 30 for the previous fall semester and no
later than June 30 for the previous spring semester. Semesters are defined as
“Fall” (August/September through December) and “Spring” (January through May/June).
Invoices can be mailed to Jamie Massa at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center
at P.O. Box 1044, Orange, TX 77631-1044; faxed to 409-670-9341; or emailed to
Invoices shall be paid by the Stark Foundation no later than February for the previous fall
semester, and July for the previous spring semester.
The bus drop-off and pick-up site is on West Park Avenue directly across from a blue house,
at our Bus Drop Off gate. The bus will stay on the street, pull up to the gate along the black
fence on the Shangri La side of the street, and drop-off or pick-up the students. Please ask
the bus driver to use their warning lights as directed by state law. A Shangri La educator
will be there to greet you.
Please have the bus drop you off at Shangri La at the scheduled start time for the
program. The bus should return to Shangri La to pick up the students at the scheduled end
time for the program, unless…
...you would like to stay late or arrive early to enjoy our picnic area. Please arrange for the
bus to pick you up approximately 1/2 hour after the scheduled end time, or drop you off
approximately 1/2 hour earlier than the scheduled start time.
Free bus parking is available in our parking lot across the street from the main entrance.
Cancellation Policy
Because most programs have rainy-day/indoor versions, Shangri La generally does not
cancel programs due to weather. We strongly discourage teachers from cancelling their program. Many classrooms are turned
down every year because our programs fill up. When teachers cancel at the last minute, we cannot fill the slot.
We understand that unexpected situations arise. If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible.
Did You Know… Owls can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees, but NOT all the way around.
“Excellent tour! The students were engaged and learning the entire tour. We had a great
time and experience.”

Explorer Tours offer a little more flexibility for local teachers.
You, the classroom teacher, will lead your students on an educational excursion through our gardens and Nature
Discovery Center. You can teach your students about science, art, history, and more!
Shangri La offers workshops to introduce you to the gardens so you will be comfortable leading your own tour. Learn to identify some of our plants, discover fun facts about them,
and learn tips to engage students in the gardens. There is a pathway marked by numbered stones that can be used with
our guidebook. After the workshop, you are certified to register your class for an Explorer Tour. Attend only once and you are “certified” for life.

We want your class to build a scarecrow!
Find rules and entry form on our website at
www.shangrilagardens.org.
If your class builds a scarecrow, you can schedule a class visit to Shangri La for free to enjoy all of the scarecrows on display in the gardens. Shangri La does not pay for busing for these visits.
This scarecrow was entered in 2016 by Ms. Davis’s and
Ms. Ellis’s third grade classes. Little Cypress Elementary
Shangri La’s 9th Annual
Scarecrow Festival October 10 through November 4, 2017
