From Your Pastor…..
Last Sunday the Outreach Team was able to meet together to begin dis-
cussing what it would look like for our church to effectively reach our
neighborhood with the gospel. The members of this team are: Michael
Lail, Doug Cantrell, Donny Black, Kay Black and Joe Beeler. Over the
coming weeks, this team will look at two concepts.
First, the team will explore the concept of ‘Incarnational Evangelism’.
Just as Christ was sent into the world to save the lost, so we have been
sent by Christ to proclaim his message. Incarnational Evangelism in-
volves entering the world of those who don’t know Christ, sacrificially
serving them in Jesus’ name, and proclaiming the good news of the king-
dom.
Second, the team will seek to aid in developing a ‘culture of evangelism’
at Smithwood Baptist Church. When a church has a healthy culture of
evangelism, the church is equipping and empowering its members to
share the gospel regularly in daily life, the church sees the task of evange-
lism as a community effort, and the church has a heart to see people come
to faith in Christ.
Be in prayer for the Outreach Team as they explore these things. Pray
specifically that our church will be effective in reaching Fountain City
with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Grace and Peace,
Jeff
Beginning on Saturday, September 7th, at 9:30 a.m., Angela Lane will lead a women’s Bible study. The study chosen is “Exodus: Part 1”, by Jen Wilkin. Meetings will then be every other Saturday. Coffee and do-nuts will be served. This will be a wonderful opportunity to study God’s word and connect with other women. Please see Angela or call the office if you are interested in participating so that we can be sure to have enough materials on hand.
Enjoy Mighty Wurlitzer organ performances by Freddie Brabson and spe-cial guests, Dor L’Dor. Dor L’Dor is a band playing traditional Jewish folk and dance music (Klezmer music) and will be joined by Jon Walton on trombone, Joe Christian on trombone and vocals, Sean Copeland on trom-bone, and Dave Peeples on bass. They will also joined by Kelle Jolly on vo-cals and Will Boyd on saxophone. After the show, our Keenager group gathers to have lunch and continue the fellowship at Shoney’s on North Broadway. The van leaves Smithwood at 11:00 a.m.
The Trustees have decided to replace the roof on the entire church building because of recent storm damage and aging. Fortunately, our insurance company has agreed to pay for almost half of the work that needs to be done. We also have some that has come to us through estate gifts and in the capital improvement fund that will help us pay for this project.
Random Acts of Flowers is a non-profit operating in Knoxville, staffed by volunteers, to which Smithwood has frequently donated altar ar-rangements. Random Acts of Flowers’ mission is to take unwanted flo-ral arrangements, break them down into vases, and distribute those to people in hospitals and nursing homes. They are always in need of vas-es. If you have been given floral arrangements and find yourself with more vases than you need, please think about donating them to this ministry. Your unwanted vases can be brought to the church office at any time. Thank you!
