RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
1. Neurotoxic disease - Dr. Schaumburg, in collaboration with Drs. Peter Spencer, Cedric Raine and
Joseph Arezzo at Albert Einstein and with Professor P.K. Thomas at the Royal Free Hospital in London,
has conducted and is currently performing several ultrastructural and electrophysiological studies of
nervous system disease produced by neurotoxins in primates and dogs. In addition to experimental
studies, he is pursuing federally funded clinical studies designed to help in the early detection of nervous
system disease among individuals exposed to neurotoxins in the workplace and directs the
Neurotoxicology Clinical Center at Montefiore Medical Center to evaluate such persons.
2. Adrenoleukodystrophy - Dr. Schaumburg has investigated both clinical and morphological aspects
of adrenoleukodystrophy. He has conducted an electron microscopic examination of serial sections of
the demyelinating lesions in ALD to determine both the role of the lymphocytes and the nature of the
oligodendrocyte reaction in this condition.
3. Peripheral Neuropathy - Dr. Schaumburg is Co-Director of the Neuromuscular Division of the
Neurology Department and supervises the weekly neuromuscular conference. He has written a well-
received textbook on Diseases of Peripheral Nerve, now in its third edition (Oxford University Press
2110) and has written the chapters on peripheral neuropathy in Editions 17 and 18 of Cecil's Textbook
of Medicine. Dr. Schaumburg has also co-authored the chapters on Industrial Toxins and
Pharmaceutical Agents in the 4th
edition of Peripheral Neuropathy (Dyck & Thomas eds., Elsevier
Press, 2005). Dr. Schaumburg, in concert with Dr. Arezzo, has designed and developed several
diagnostic instruments for testing sensory dysfunction (Vibratron, thermal device). Dr. Schaumburg has
been the Principal Investigator of a clinical study of the efficacy of aldose reductase inhibitors in treating
painful diabetic neuropathy, two studies of nucleoside neuropathy in AIDS patients, and a clinical study
of an outbreak of peripheral neuropathy in workers at the Shell Oil Refinery in Deer Park, Texas. He
and Dr. Alan Berger and Dr. Joseph Arezzo established a Sensory Motor Evaluation Center and a
Neuromuscular Center at Montefiore Medical Center to evaluate peripheral nerve disease and to act as a
9
resource service for the institution.
CLINICAL, TEACHING AND NEUROTOXIC PUBLIC INTEREST ACTIVITIES:
1. General Neurology - Dr. Schaumburg, as Chairman of the Neurology Service at Jacobi Medical
Center and Montefiore Medical Center, presides over weekly grand rounds and clinical conferences. He
also is an attending physician for two months of every year.
2. Clinical Neurotoxicology - Dr. Schaumburg, as Director of the Neurotoxicology Clinical Center,
evaluates and treats many individuals with neurotoxic illness. He has consulted on diverse intoxications
including: toluene, ddC, taxol, ethylene oxide, cisplatin, vincristine, cyanide, carbon monoxide,
mercury, cadmium, nitrous oxide, n-hexane, acrylamide, pyridoxine, pyrethrum, ciguatera, lathyrus, and
organophosphate intoxication. Publications have resulted from many of these cases.
3. Medical Undergraduate Teaching - Dr. Schaumburg is responsible for the peripheral neuropathy
and neurotoxicology section of the second year Nervous System Pathophysiology course at Albert
Einstein. In recognition for excellence in teaching, the undergraduates elected Dr. Schaumburg to the
Leo M. Davidoff Society in 1979.
4. American Academy of Neurology Course in Neurotoxicology - Dr. Schaumburg directs, organizes
and participates in the Neurotoxicology Course at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of
Neurology.
5. Textbooks - Dr. Spencer and Dr. Schaumburg edited the first comprehensive (925 pages) textbook
on Neurotoxicology - Experimental and Clinical Neurotoxicology, 1980, Williams and Wilkins.
Oxford University Press published the second edition of this textbook in March 2000. Dr. Schaumburg,
assisted by Drs. Spencer and P.K. Thomas, has written a 241-page textbook Disorders of Peripheral
Nerve, published by F.A. Davis in 1983 as Volume 24 in the Contemporary Neurology Series. A second
edition appeared in 1991 as Volume 36 in the Contemporary Neurology Series and a third edition (now
entitled as: Peripheral Neuropathies in Clinical Practice) has recently been published (2110, Oxford
University Press).
6. Public Service
Served as vestryman, then senior warden, of Grace Church (Episcopal) 1974 - 1978
Served on the Board of Directors of Morningside House, a skilled nursing facility
affiliated with the Grace Episcopal Church 1989 - 1991
Invited to be a participant of an expert panel at the National Institutes of
Health Technology Workshop on Gulf War Syndrome 1994
