Its perimeter is 100 mileslong and its deepest point is 372 meters. The position of the lake surrounded by Hills andmountains which protect it from the rigors of the north creates an environment in which thewarmth of the temperate climate is combined with the fresh air from the mountains. It is characterized by precious examples of architecture, 19th century villas and by thefamous pink granite quarries; it is a site of noteworthy antiquity, as can be seen from theRoman tablets on the facade of the Parish church. The monumental complex of the provostrycollegiate church, in the town center, includes the baptistery, whose original octagonalstructure dates back to the Palaeocristian age (5th century); Renaissance frescoes inside. The church, dedicated to Saint Jervis and Saint Protasio, still bears intact the original 12thcentury facade, square of partially plastered stone. Since the early 19th century, it has been awell-known by the beautiful villas of the surrounding area among which, villa Henfrey (nowBranca), where Queen Victoria stayed, and villa Fedora, which belonged to the composerUmberto Giordano. The quarrying of the precious pink granite, still carried out today, reachedits peak in the early 20th century. Some of the most important monuments in the world havebeen made of this material.

STRESA - This sleepy Swiss/Italian town is situated in a central, but also panoramic andpicturesque position along the lakeside roadway, stands just in front of the Borromee isles.Piazza Marconi, with its landing-stage and the Church of S. Ambrogio, which was restored inNeo-Classical style by G. Zanoia in 1790, stretches from the beautiful beach of the lakesideroad. Just at the back of the church you see Villa Ducale the first one to have been built in1770 and after which all the others follwed this is also where here Antonio Rosmini died.Celebrated by II Centro Internazionale di Studi Rosminiani (an international religious andcultural center), which holds its seat in the Villa.
