Mercateo AG, Leipzig
Mercateo is Europe’s leading procurement plat- form for business customers and brings together buyers, manufacturers, suppliers and service pro- viders to conduct transactions with one another. In collaboration with design2sense a spatial and graphic concept was developed in order to create new spaces in which to think and work.
The team decided to transfer the network mission statement to the over 10-metre-high wall surface. Representing the information and communication structures, a delicate network of lines covers two storeys of an open spatial structures, reaching the top of the roof. The regular layout of the beams, the brightly-lit window niches and the interaction of light and shadow serve to generate an almost sacral character.
The linear two dimensionality evolves into three dimensional structures micro-perforated on both sides, which visually and functionally reflect the communicative behaviour of the different spatial zones and significantly influence the acoustics of the space. Zones with higher noise insulation requirements receive condensed structures, areas of privacy reduced acoustic elements. Individually-drafted flowcharts illustrate the metier of the IT sector and provide recommendations for social behaviour in the kitchen, sanitation and working areas. As a progression of decision-making processes towards the resolution of a task, the f lowcharts each offer a real and a surreal, ironic instruction. A cheeky little monster acts as a perso- nal, weaker inner self.

Vor 3000 Jahren – Die Erste Geesthachterin / 3000 years ago – The first female citizen of Geesthacht

In 1932 archaeological excavations near the town of Geesthacht in Schleswig-Holstein revealed a burial complex with five graves dating from the Bronze Age. Particularly noteworthy here was the remains of a mortuary chamber with the grave of a woman and a child. Employing artefacts and atmospheric staging, the exhibition Geesthacht Museum reconstructs the image of this woman – the first female citizen of Geesthacht.
A spacious installation with a scale, abstract model of the mortuary chamber provides an atmosphe-ric introduction to the subject. Five floor-to-ceiling Plexiglas columns in the documented former post holes are duplicated via a reflective surface and, together with an abstract roof, form the cubature of the former burial site. The spaces that follow are each assigned sub-aspects of the reconstruc-tion. The key elements of costume accessories, clothing, hair and hair adornments are atmosphe-rically presented in spatial, graphic and tactile form, with the tour completed with a retrospec-tive portrait of the Geesthacht woman.
At a text level, the font Maple was employed. Specific elements of the text degenerate into fragments. The traces of blurred silhouettes serve as metaphors for the archaeological work.

In 1999 a significant Bronze Age find was made in Central Germany. The 3,600-year-old »Nebra Sky Disc« is considered to be the oldest specific depiction of cosmic phenomena. The Arche Nebra Visitor Centre, designed by Holzer Kobler Architekturen, provides information about its spectacular discovery and history.
Who did the sky disc belong to, and who buried it? The exhibition addresses these questions with a comprehensive overview of the prospering Bronze Age culture. It describes the rise, transformation and downfall of the mighty Unetice rulers, renowned for their opulent chieftain tombs, as well as the subsequent dynasty of the »Sögel warrior class«.
A low outer ring of irregular islands surrounds three large, dark exhibition structures with the presti- gious objects. In the centre is the sky disc as ruler insignia, uniting both cultures chronologically as well as ideally. A 5 m high red arch as the scale interpretation of a chieftain‘s burial mound stands directly over a yellow circle symbolising the sky disc. Tables of the Unetice and Sögel people flank the spatial layout on two opposing walls.
Blue and green islands appear to emerge from the ground as fragments, enclosing small glass vessels, the interiors of which can be viewed from all sides. In contrast, the dark cabinets only permit small individual, circular viewing points. White silhouettes of the rulers‘ insignia are assigned to each section and are found on all communication material.

The exhibition at the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig provides an initial overview of the planning and construction history of the city in this era, organising the key construction projects into three chronological sections: Sta- bilisation of authority 1933 – 36, Demonstration of power 1936 – 40 and Wartime reality 1940 – 45.
The idea for staging the exhibition is based upon highlighting the central role of propaganda and mass rallies as a means of exercising the authority of National Socialism via drills, training and forming of the individual. Uniform wall elements are arranged diagonally in the space in strict patterns. They are reminiscent of a marching column, in which all individual interests are dissolved. Narrow, red f lags extend each individual wall, reinforcing homogeneity and the monumental impression of the space. Orientation is aided by black walls and f loor lettering, together with a red line. The f lags are coloured in an increasing gradient of black to red. Whilst they maintain their rigid order – representing totalitarian ideo- logies – in the three chapters, in the final chapter the formation of the information bearers is disrupted: walls stand crooked or lie on the f loor.
The exhibition concept is transferred to all communication and advertising material: the formation is visualised through the serial arrangement of an image motif in combination with a red surface.

Clara & Robert Schumann in Leipzig, 1840 – 1844
Between 1840 and 1844 the composers Robert and Clara Schumann lived in Inselstraße, in Leipzig. The house has been used as a museum and training facility since 1999. In the anniversary year 2010 the historic exhibition rooms were extended to include the former workroom of Robert Schumann.
In the newly-furnished workroom the central exhibit is a piece of so-called exhibition furniture. A hybrid object between grand piano and writing cabinet, it enables the themes of Schumann‘s different activities as composer and journalist to be addressed. Secret compartments, drawers and buttons, together with an audio station, aim to appeal to a younger audience in particular. Schumann‘s list of works is displayed on the wall, analogue to an audio trail.
The present-day f loor plan does not correspond to the historic room. Its original cubature has now been recreated via movable panels, enabling use of the entire space for events. The front of the panels depicts real and fictitious figures from Schumann‘s League of David, in silhouette form. The reverse details these protagonists in the form of short biographies.
In the hall area a newly-created wall area explains the genealogy of the family and the places of residence of the couple.

In 2009 a special exhibition opened at the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde on a 650 m² surface area, dedicated to ageing and its various facets in Germany and other cultures.
The exhibition title »FaltenReich« refers to the external changes that affect the human skin from the first hours of life onwards. As a metaphor for this, fabric was used for the design of the exhibition. This triggers associations of vitality and lightness: mobilised by streams of air, it symbolises the action of breathing. Room-height swathes of fabric define a meandering path through the three consecutive exhibition rooms.
The textile material serves both the spatial struc- ture and the illustration of content. Portals of white f lags guide the visitor to each theme and, in combination with the alternating colours, lend the exhibition a rhythm of its own. Questions and quotes arranged diagonally across the fabric are directed at the visitors, joining exhibition fixtures, audio and video points in characterising the interactive part of the exhibition.
Heritage conservation concerns meant that an exhibition system was required that left the rooms untouched. An aluminium construction produced for this purpose was installed as a supporting fixture for the f lag elements.
