Cardinal Stritch University’s Saint Clare Center for Catholic Life Saturday Institute for Lay Ministries To serve publicly as catechist, teacher, liturgical, administrative or pastoral minister in the Catholic Church, lay persons are expected to receive appropriate education and formation in Catholic theological and spiritual traditions. In 2005, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops produced “Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord” to affirm and guide the development of Catholic laity seeking to serve in Church ministries. In addition, the Dynamic Catholic Institute suggests that ‘study’ is one of the four key dimensions to be embraced by all Catholics in these times.

In an attempt to respond to this reality, Cardinal Stritch University’s Saint Clare Center for Catholic Life was established in 2007. The Center has developed the Saturday Institute for Lay Ministries to be a flexible, practical program of adult formation that is faithful to the Church’s theological and doctrinal tradition and aligned with the principles outlined by the U.S. bishops in “Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord.” The Saturday Institute meets on the main campus of Cardinal Stritch University in Fox Point, Wisconsin and provides a systematic curriculum of education and formation which is offered on six Saturdays during each fall semester and six Saturdays during each spring semester. All individual courses meet for 1 hour and 40 minutes on each of six Saturdays, for a total of 10 classroom hours per course. Courses may be taken a la carte or in a prescribed sequence for the sake of earning a particular certification. Saturday Institute classes may be taken in English and Spanish language cohorts. Certification Possibilities: Certificate of Completion in Lay Ministry: Through the Saint Clare Center’s Saturday Institute, Cardinal Stritch University grants a Certificate of Completion in Lay Ministry to students who complete the prescribed requirements. Students seeking the certificate of completion may enter their studies at the beginning of either Cycle A or B and must continue their studies for four consecutive semesters, fulfilling the specific requirements established by the staff of the Saint Clare Center. A core curriculum of 160 hours of study, ministry formation and retreats must be completed. The specific requirements: 4 Classes in Theology 2 Classes in Scripture 2 Classes in Spirituality 4 Classes in Ministry Formation 4 Retreats

Saturday Institute Features: • Offered every semester on Saturdays only

• Each course meets for 10 hours (total) on 6 Saturdays

• Courses may be taken a la carte

• Courses may be combined to earn a certificate (see certification possibilities)

• Two day long 8 hour retreats offered annually

• Courses may be taken in English OR Spanish language

Certification Possibilities: in Religious Education:

The Saturday Institute may serve catechists and catechetical program coordinators as a resource toward Archdiocese of Milwaukee Religious Education Certification. The following pathways can be followed:

Pathway toward Basic Religious Education Certification: For a catechist who has no prior training or religious education certification, Basic certification may be attained by completion of FOUR Institute courses - one each in theology, scripture, spirituality, and methods. Courses may be taken a la carte and in any order (or in any Institute cycle) and applied toward BASIC religious education certification. Catechists are encouraged to consult their parish coordinator/director of religious education for religious education certification expectations and applications.

Pathway toward Intermediate Religious Education Certification: For a catechist who already has earned Basic religious education certification, Intermediate certification may be attained by completion of FIVE Institute courses – one each in theology, scripture, spirituality, and methods plus a fifth course in either theology, scripture, spirituality or methods. Courses may be taken a la carte and in any order (or in any Institute cycle) and applied toward INTERMEDIATE religious education certification. Catechists are encouraged to consult their parish coordinator/director of religious education for religious education certification expectations and applications.

Pathway toward Advanced Religious Education Certification: A. For a catechist (or program coordinator) who has already earned Intermediate religious education certification, completion of SIX Institute courses – one each in theology, scripture, spirituality, and methods plus a fifth and sixth course in either theology, scripture, spirituality or methods. Courses may be taken a la carte and in any order (or in any Institute cycle) and applied toward ADVANCED religious education certification. Catechists are encouraged to consult their parish coordinator/director of religious education for religious education certification expectations and applications.

B. Anyone who completes the full required course of study and formation to earn a CERTIFICATE of COMPLETION in LAY MINISTRY through the Saint Clare Center (160 hours of prescribed core curriculum, ministry formation and retreats) may also apply toward ADVANCED Religious Education Certification (Please consult Saint Clare Center staff for further details).

Important Note: A given Saturday Institute for Lay Ministries (the Institute) course may only be counted or applied toward any certification requirement once. For Religious Education Certification, courses may be applied in any order. Religious Education Certification attempted through the Institute will require successful completion of course requirements as outlined by each instructor and in accordance with expectations of the Saint Clare Center staff.

Cualquier persona que complete el curso de estudio y formación, obtendrá un CERTIFICADO de CUMPLIMIENTO en el área de MINISTERIO LAICO otorgado por el Centro Santa Clara (160 horas prescritas por el plan de estudios, formación ministerial y retiros). También podría aplicar para obtener una Certificación avanzada de Educación Religiosa (Por favor, consulte al personal del Centro Santa Clara para más detalles).

Nota Importante: Un curso dado los sábados por el Instituto para la Formación de Ministerio Laico (en el Instituto) podría contar o aplicarse hacia cualquier certificación solamente una vez. Para la Certificación en Educación Religiosa, los cursos podrían ser aplicados en cualquier orden. Posibilidades De Certificación: Certificado en Ministerio Laico: A través del Instituto de los Sábados del Centro Santa Clara, la Universidad Cardinal Stritch otorga a los estudiantes que cumplen con todos los requisitos, un certificado de culminación en el área de “Ministerio Laico”. Los estudiantes que buscan el certificado de culminación deben comenzar sus estudios al principio del Ciclo A o Ciclo B, y deben continuar sus estudios por cuatro semestres consecutivos, cumpliendo así con los requisitos establecidos por el personal del Centro Santa Clara. Centro Santa Clara de la Universidad Cardinal Stritch para una Vida Católica El Instituto de los Sabados para Ministros Laicos

Para poder servir públicamente en algún ministerio como catequista, ministro en la liturgia, ministro administrativo o ministro pastoral dentro de la Iglesia Católica, se espera que la persona laica reciba una apropiada educación en teología católica y formación en las tradiciones de la Iglesia. En el año 2005, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos elaboró: “Colaboradores en la Viña del Señor” para afirmar y guiar el desarrollo de los laicos que buscan servir en los diferentes ministerios de la Iglesia Católica.

En un intento por responder a ésta necesidad, el Centro Santa Clara de la Universidad Cardinal Stritch para una Vida Católica, fue fundado en el año 2007. El Centro ha desarrollado El instituto para Ministros Laicos como un programa flexible y práctico para la formación de adultos. Este programa es fiel a las enseñanzas y doctrinas de la Iglesia Católica. El programa está basado en los principios de “Colaboradores en la Viña del Señor”, establecido por los Obispos de los Estados Unidos. El Instituto de los sábados se reúne en el edificio principal de la Universidad Cardinal Stritch localizado en Fox Point, Wisconsin. Este programa provee un plan de estudios sistemático en educación y formación laical, el cual se ofrece seis sábados por cada semestre, es decir, seis clases en otoño y otros seis sábados durante la primavera. Cada clase se reúne por 1 hora y 40 minutos en cada uno de los seis sábados, dando un total de diez horas de clase por curso. Los cursos se pueden tomar a la carte (a su elección) o por secuencias previamente establecidas para que cada estudiante pueda obtener alguna de las certificaciones que se ofrecen. Las clases se ofrecen en inglés y en español.
