SCC Soft Computer - A Record ofAchievement in IT Healthcare

SCC will soon celebrate a quarter of a century of service, but thefocus of its vision is towards the next twenty five years.

As the most functional LISavailable today, SoftLab’s

technical and functionaladvantage continues to grow inthe highly competitive informationmanagement field. SCC SoftComputer, at one point or another, has replaced every major LISvendor system in the market-place. With dwindling vendorcompetition due to the specializednature of the LIS market, manyinstitutions with legacy systemsoperate today without vendorsupport or seek new LIS solutions.Healthcare economics, along withrapidly changing healthcaretechnology, are two reasons forSCC’s rise to prominence.

To date, SCC has displaced over118 systems with its SoftLab suiteof products. But there are otherreasons for SCC’s growingsuccess. With close to a quarterof a century of product deve-lopment and technologicalinnovation, SCC’s track recordspeaks volumes on its contri-bution to the industry and itscommitment to its customers-past, present and future.

Working With The Best

Evanston Northwestern Hospital(ENH) is recognized as one of theTop 100 Hospitals. It rankedsecond in the nation in 1999. Thesame year ENH chose to replaceits legacy LIS with a new vendorsolution. The new system had toserve three newly merged multi-site hospitals and several remoteclinics in the Chicago area, including growing OutreachServices.

ENH’s objective was to integratemultiple laboratories and improvethe information flow; implementbar-coding; automate testing withrules based technology; planrobotics; support and expandOutreach Services with remotetracking and reporting capa-bilities. In January, 2000 SCC SoftComputer was selected.

SCC’s full line of products, multi-site capability and leading edgetechnology provided ENH with thesolutions they were looking for.Evanston Northwestern Hospitalwent live in April, 2000, within astrict 100-day period allotted forimplementation.

“From the time we sent out ourRFP for the Pathology systemthrough bidding, implementation, upgrades and the day-to-daysupport of the system, SCC hasbeen a pleasure to work with.In my experience, I have neverhad contact with a represen-tative of SCC who was notcompetent, professional, andfriendly - even in the most try-ing of times and circumstances. In case we don’t have theopportunity for discussionbetween now and September15, I want to thank all of you foryour patience, assistance, andwillingness to explain featuresand functions during these pastthree years. You have beengreat to work with.”

James Townsend, Ph.D.Clinical Information Systems.Prior to his retirementSeptember 15, 2000.

ENH has attributed the successof its modernization, among otherthings, to an excellent workingrelationship established by SCCSoft Computer to meet EvanstonNorthwestern’s goals.

Meeting Clients’ Needs

In July 1997, SCC Soft Computerwas identified by the Mayo Clinicas the LIS vendor most capableof marketing and selling a Mayo-developed Competency andRecord Documentation System(CARDS) for the healthcareindustry. SCC accepted thischallenge and produced SoftETC(Education Training & Compe-tency).

SCC now offers SoftETC as amanagement subsystem toSoftLab to provide documentationfor all training and competencyevents of each laboratoryemployee. The Joint Commissionhas verbally endorsed this systemfor Accreditation of Healthcare

Organizations (JCAHO), theAmerican Association of BloodBanks (AABB), and the College ofAmerican Pathologists (CAP).SCC also sells this system as astand-alone and provides Internetaccess to SoftETC for smallercustomers on a fee per employee-

per-month basis. We are pleasedthat Mayo selected SCC over allLIS vendors to market and sell thismuch needed product.

Technology SolutionsFor The Realities OfHealthcare Economics

Faced with budgetary constraintsand the need to improve costefficiency, St. Mary’s Hospitalmade the decision in 1995 toconsolidate and integrate itslaboratory operations. With annualbudget reductions of 4%-5%,coupled with several hospi-talclosures in the Montreal area, St.Mary’s was challenged with doingmore with less.

Following an extensive workflowanalysis, the 414-bed acute carehospital undertook a process ofmoving from a non-computerizedtraditional laboratory model to afully computerized, robotic CoreLab. In choosing an LIS, St. Mary’slooked for a seamless process, apaperless environment andminimal human interaction. SCC’sSoftLab was chosen as the best-of-breed solution.

St. Mary’s derived significantbenefits from SoftLab’s auto-reporting, auto-validation, reflextesting and bar coding features.St. Mary’s was able to reduce theircost-per-test by 52%, verifiedthrough government audits, duein part to SCC’s powerful programtools.

After going live in 1997, St. Mary’stook the next step movingtowards front end automation, ormodular robotics, knowing SCC’sSoftLab information system, withSoftMic, SoftQC and SoftPathmodules could support thetechnology.

Re-engineering the operationalprocesses in the lab became athree way partnership betweenSt. Mary’s Hospital, SCC SoftComputer and Beckman-Coulter.The net impact since 2000 hasbeen a modern, model laboratory, regarded today as one of themost technologically advanced, efficient and cost effectivelaboratories in North America.

Award WinningContribution

In November, 2001 the DiagnosticLaboratories of St. Michael’ sHospital received the prestigiousCIPA Award of Excellence. Thehospital’s diagnostic laboratorieswere judged by CIPA (CanadianInformation Productivity Awards)as an organization transformed byinformation technology.

The transformation began whenSt. Michael’s Hospital acquiredand merged with another Torontohospital, Wellesley Central. Tocope with the increased work-load, St. Michael’s DiagnosticLaboratory implemented a numberof advanced IT solutions to handlethe enormous increase intransactions and laboratory data.

The first step in the automationprocess was to implement SCC’sSoftLab laboratory informationsystem. Because of SoftLab’sadvanced capabilit ies ofinformation management androbotics readiness, St. Michael’swas able to move forward withits automation plan quickly. TheDiagnostic Lab automated thepre-analytical and loading phases, which in turn freed up valuableresources to deal with the moretechnical work. St. Michael’s wasalso able to reduce errors throughbar coding and labeling at thedraw site.

With its primary tube chain logic,SoftLab allowed a reduction in theamount of tubes needed tocomplete orders. This was an

enormous patient care initiative, affording a 40% decrease to date. With the purchase of an automatedrobotic specimen processingsystem, St. Michael’sDiagnostic Laboratorybecame one of thefirst hospitals inCanada to utilize nextgeneration informa-tion managementtechnology. Coupledwith SCC’s laboratoryinformation system,St. Michael’s diagnos-tic lab links chemistry, immunochemistry, nephelometry andtoxicology instrumen-tation to effectivelymanage information for maximumefficiency.

St. Michael’s now offers full-service, hospital-based testing, with state-of-the-art equipmentand facilities, assuring clients thehighest quality laboratory testing. For its part, SCC Soft Computeroffers instrument interfaces thatare second to none in theindustry.
