HOW TO APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS 1. Read each scholarship description CAREFULLY (some

require additional items—other than the application)2. Fill out the Scholarship Application (at the back of this

booklet) a. Fill out entire applicationb. Check box of scholarship(s) you want

3. Return Scholarship Application and attachments to the address on the back of the application

4. Return portfolios (if required) to person listed

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Most scholarships are based on grades and/or financial

need. Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When several applicants meet the stated criteria, financial need will be considered.

Students who receive scholarships are expected to remain in 12 hours each semester, unless otherwise noted. Students must remain in good standing in terms of conduct and citizenship as determined by the college. They must also pay on schedule debts of any kind owed to the college.

Shawnee Community College (SCC) reserves the right to alter or cancel individual scholarships at any time for failure to meet the requirements. When one of the stated standards is not met, the student will lose the scholarship. Once a student has lost an SCC scholarship for any reason, it cannot be resumed at a later date. The student is responsible for making sure all requirements are met.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID?Financial Aid (FA) is any scholarship, grant, loan, or

work program that helps to pay for your college education. FA is intended to assist, not replace, a family’s

resources. Families should be considered the primary source for funding a college education. FA might not pay for all of your expenses, but it can help.

HOW DOES FINANCIAL AID WORK?Financial Aid is based on family need. Financial need is

the difference between the cost of attending SCC for one year and the amount your family can be expected to pay. For FA purposes, your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is based on the information you submit on the FAFSA.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID?The first step is to complete the FAFSA. This form

automatically applies for a Pell Grant, FSEOG, Work-Study, MAP (Illinois residents), and IIA (incoming freshmen and Illinois residents).

The FAFSA must be filled out each academic year. It is available in high school counselors’ offices, in the SCC FA Office, and at FAFSA on the Web (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov). To complete the FAFSA online, computers are available in the computer labs on main campus, at the extension centers, and in the library. It is even quicker if you bring your tax information into the Shawnee College Financial Aid Office and let a staff member put it online for you.

WHEN DO I APPLY? You should apply for FA for the fall semester as soon as

your income taxes are filled out for the previous year. FOR EXAMPLE: If you apply for FA for the Fall 2007 semester, you may fill out the FAFSA (paper or online) anytime after January 1, 2008. You do not have to mail in your taxes first, as long as you have them prepared before filling out the FAFSA.

However, if your family is NOT required to file income taxes, you may fill out the FAFSA anytime after January 1.

WHAT IS SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS? Students must be making Satisfactory Academic

Progress (SAP) toward a degree to keep federal or state FA. The SAP Policy is available in the college catalog.

WHAT DATES ARE CRITICAL?Meeting the following dates should allow processing time

to receive funds and meet SCC’s billing and other deadlines.

FAFSA February 1Complete and mail the FAFSA by this date for priority

consideration. It is strongly recommended that students complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 . This will help assure that it is on file by scholarship deadline dates.

Monetary Award Program August 1The state-established priority deadline for new and

continuing MAP applicants has been moved up to August 1. These dates refer to the last day the state can receive your FAFSA results. You should send your FAFSA in at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to this date.

NOTE: These dates can change without notice.

Scholarships February 1The Scholarship Application, additional information, and

portfolios should be turned in by this date. Exceptions are noted in this booklet.

Questions?Call the Financial Aid Office at

Page 5: SCC FA book

I SUBMITTED MY FAFSA, WHAT HAPPENS NOW?Three to four weeks after mailing your FAFSA, you will

receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR informs you of Federal Pell Grant eligibility.

Submitting your FAFSA on the Internet will save processing time (it usually takes one to two weeks to receive your SAR if your FAFSA is submitted online and you include your e-mail address).

Review the SAR carefully for any missing information or errors. If you find any errors, bring your SAR into the FA Office and we will make the corrections for you.

WHAT TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID ARE AVAILABLE?

Grants and Scholarships Grants and scholarships are the most attractive sources

of student FA since they do not have to be repaid.

Scholarships Scholarships are awarded based on the following:

Financial need Academic achievement Artistic ability Athletic ability College major Community activities Special interest Military commitment

Federal Pell Grant The Pell Grant is the basis for all Federal FA and is

given to students who have financial need and meet federal eligibility requirements. Pell Grants may range from $400 to $4050 per year (these numbers may change slightly each year).

Pell Grants are based upon the number of eligible credit hours a student is enrolled in on Pell Status Day. This is after mid-term of each semester. Half of the Pell will be paid in the fall semester and the other half will be paid in the spring semester. Only students who do not attend full-time in the fall or spring semester may have some Pell left over for the summer semester.

The federal school code for Shawnee Community College is 007693.

NOTE: Courses repeated after a student has received a

grade of A, B, C, or D will not be counted in determining the amount of federally-funded or state-funded financial aid, including the federal Pell grant and the state Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant, unless one or more of the following conditions exist: The student is allowed to earn credit for the course

more than once. It is the first time the student is repeating the course

and they earned an “F” the first time, or a “C” is required to pass the course and the student has previously earned a “D” or “F” in that course.

Classes dropped after tenth day count as attempted hours, but not successfully completed hours. To remain eligible for a Pell grant, students must successfully complete 67% of the hours attempted.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

FSEOGs are awarded to students who have the greatest financial need. Amounts vary based on annual funding levels.

Monetary Award Program (MAP) The Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant is a state-

funded grant that is awarded to eligible students. It is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is determined by the information reported on the FAFSA. Students must also be Illinois residents and enrolled in at least three credit hours. The MAP grant will only pay for tuition at the SCC in-district rate.

Illinois Incentive for Access (IIA) The Illinois Incentive for Access (IIA) grant is a state-

funded grant that is awarded to incoming freshmen. It is awarded to students with a zero Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The student (or their parent—if they are dependent) must have been an Illinois resident one year prior to the beginning of the award year. In addition, students must be enrolled in at least six credit hours.

Federal Work-Study The Work-Study program gives students a chance to

earn money while gaining work experience. Many jobs are available through the Work-Study

program. Students can work up to 20 hours per week. The amount you will be able to earn depends on your financial need, the availability of funds, and the amount of other aid you are receiving.

Shawnee College maintains a listing of both on and off-campus work and community service jobs through Work-Study. Open jobs are posted on the main campus (across the hall from the Bursar’s Office), at the extension centers, and online at http://www.shawneecc.edu under “Employment”.

HOW CAN I FIND OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS? For access to thousands of scholarships, go to

http://www.fastweb.com. Fill out a questionnaire online and they will match you with scholarships for which you qualify.

Students should check with their high school counselor and with civic clubs or organizations in their hometowns to see if other scholarships are available.

SAMPLE AWARD AMOUNTS Listed below is a SAMPLE award letter that previous SCC students have received. This is an E XAMPLE and does not mean you will be eligible for the awards listed.

Student Aid Award Letter - Initial 2007-2008

Printed Date: 1/24/07

John Doe ID#: 123456

123 State StreetAnywhere, IL 12345

After a review of your financial aid application, the Shawnee Community College Student Financial Aid Office has determined that you may be eligible to receive the following aid to help you meet your education expenses for the 2007-2008 academic year. Please accept or decline and sign at the bottom and return this Award Letter bv the above date.

If you receive any additional earnings from any source, this package will be adjusted. Contact the Student Financial Aid Office concerning any adjustments which you are aware should be made. Failure to return a siqned copy of this Student Aid Award letter bv the above date may result in the cancellation of all aid. Aid is valid only upon enrollment. This award rescinds all previous award letters.

* Est indicates estimated award - amount subject to change

Award amounts for the Pell Grant and MAP Grant are based on an enrollment of 12 hours and will be adjusted based on actual enrollment as of PelI Status Day (October 24, 2007). If you attend less than full-time (take fewer than 12 eligible credit hours per semester), you may not be eligible for a Pell Grant-depending on your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Also, keep in mind that Pell will not pay for repeated classes unless you earned an F in it AND this is the first time you have repeated the course. You must be enrolled in Pell-eligible courses (courses that go toward a regular degree or certificate).

All charges will be applied to your account and the balance (if any) will be mailed to November 8, 2007. Please make sure your address is correct in our system. You will receive a statement in the mail detailing your charges for the semester and you should pay the difference (or make payment arrangements) by August 6,2004, unless you receive an award letter showing enough financial aid to cover your tuition, fees, and book charges for the semester. If you completely withdraw (or stop attending all classes) prior to the 60% point of the term. you may be required to return a portion of the Pell or SEOG grants to the federal government. In addition, you CANNOT RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID FROM ANY OTHER COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY for the same term for which you receive financial aid at Shawnee Community College. Please note that if you are enrolled in Truck Driving or Cosmetology and your start date is different than the beginning of the normal semester, your money will be applied later.

By applying for financial aid and agreeing to share that information with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), you have been considered for the State of Illinois (IL) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant. If you were determined to meet the eligibility criteria for the MAP grant, an award is included on the Award Letter. This award may be an estimate made by the financial aid office and, if so, is identified as a "State of IL MAP Grant (Est)". MAP grants are limited based on the number of applicants and funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. Please be aware that in light of state funding constraints, reductions to estimated or actual MAP grants are possible. If a State of IL MAP Grant (Est) is not included in your award letter, you probably are not eligible for the grant at Shawnee Community College.

Please indicate acceptance of the above financial aid package:

__________ I Accept the entire financial aid package as offered. __________ I Decline the following:

I understand that I must show satisfactory academic progress required (see college catalog-SCC assumes you are or will be familiar with its content) and perform in a satisfactory manner if paid work study and comply with all student loan promissory notes and agreements. Awards are subject to adequate funding and to the verification of your financial assistance form information.
