COME LEARN SCANDINAVIAN! LC 490/596 and LING 598 “Reading Knowledge of Scandinavian” provides an elementary reading knowledge of the Scandinavian languages in one semester. This approach is facilitated by a relatively simple grammar and a vocabulary with many similarities to the Germanic languages, including English. Initially, we will focus on Norwegian while in the last portion of the class, we will work with Danish and Swedish materials, concentrating on the commonalities between all three languages. The aim of the course is to help students learn to read Scandinavian texts with the help of a dictionary. Although the focus of the course is on reading, we will also work on simple conversation and pronunciation to help with vocabulary retention. This course will be particularly beneficial to grad students wishing to fulfill their MA/Ph.D. language requirement; a passing score on the language exam at the end of the semester may serve as fulfillment of this requirement.
