On a dark winter evening, three small elementary and preschool children were visiting each other and their parents at SCAN. The boys had been removed from the home because their dad and mom had neglected them. During the visit the children whispered a lot amongst themselves. The worker thought they were just glad to see each other because the children were in different foster homes. Toward the end of the visit the worker noticed one of the children kept close to the door trying to slip away. She went to get him. When she talked to him she asked the child why he was so anxious to go. The child looked at the worker, squirmed, and finally said “our house is so close to here. I am the big kid in the family and our baby told me during the visit that they had not had a chance to get their favorite stuffed animal when the lady came and took them away.”

Thirty-one years of stories. This is just one, but it is a significant story because it tells us so much.

This story tells us so much about our world of child abuse and neglect. First of all, no parent is all bad. Even neglectful and abusive houses are home for children--their HOME with the people they love the most, their parents and siblings. The parents may lose their temper, be addicted to drugs, or have been abused as a child and know no other way but abuse to discipline but they almost always love their children. They love them enough to provide stuffed animals and good night kisses.

Secondly, removal from the home is so traumatizing to little ones. They go live with strangers. They often do not know or understand why. They are frequently separated not only from mommy and daddy but from siblings, their own bed and their favorite toys. It is up to those of us who work in child welfare to humanize the system as best as we can. We helped that child get his favorite stuffed animal that night. Little things heal a lot. Little things ease pain. That is our job at SCAN.

SCAN sees the possibilities in every child and every parent. Without the vision of what can be, we would not be able to protect children, prepare parents and preserve families. We do not make parents the mothers or fathers of the year, but we do inch parents off stuck, and those small inches mean so much in the life of a child. They can even make the difference between life and death. Every parent wants to be a good parent. These children and parents can live without a lot of things, but they cannot live without HOPE! STAY strong! Be committed, give feet to your religious beliefs by being the HOPE these families need! Continue to create 31 more years of stories of HOPE.

Northern Indiana Preservation Services

In January of 2016, SCAN acquired Family Preservation Services in three regions in Northern Indiana. This acquisition was based on the closing of Indiana Mentor Children’s Programs. In conjunction with the state, SCAN was able to expand the mission into a total of 3 regions and 15 counties. The services provided in these regions by Northern IN Preservation Services are: Family Centered Treatment, Supervised Visitation, Home Based Casework, and Home Based Family Centered Therapy. This expansion allowed SCAN to increase staffing to a total of 222 staff members and services to over 116 families. Northern Indiana Preservation Services maintains three additional office locations: Lake County, IN (Region 1), South Bend, IN (Region 3), Muncie, IN (Region 7).

and families in our community. With

your help, children will build the skills they need to cope with change and adversity caused

by child abuse and neglect. You will give parents the tools they need to care for their

children with love instead of abuse and

neglect.
