4Q15
The image on the front of this 4Q15 newsletter is of MR John Collette with the President and Life members. The November meeting was John’s last meeting before heading off to Perth, Western Australia to live. John has been a very special and unique member of our Modelling Society for over 28 years. We wish you all the best in the west. Thank you John
President’s Report
Hi all welcome to the final newsletter for
2015. What a year it has been. Brilliant
models on the table, some great
techniques demonstrated and learnt a
new member’s choice and feedback
system introduced and some great
speakers. Not to mention a record
breaking annual show and comp, and
some very generous donations for
different causes.
As we wind down for the Christmas
break, enjoy the time with your families
and friends. Whilst "build something" is
always the catch cry of our club, families
and friends will not always be around-
but modelling will. Enjoy your breaks
and safe travels, wherever you may be.
We look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready to go on the third Wednesday of January 2016.

The 4th quarter 2015 Meeting Report
Undoubtedly, this last quarter is a busy one for the committee.
Not only is the AGM a focus period, but also ScaleAct. Amongst
the major events there will always be side issues that the
committee has to discuss and deal with in the interest of the
Club. What follows is a synopsis of these "issues".
Two items that took a lot of attention this quarter
were organising the calendar of events for the remainder of
2015 and throw around some thoughts for 2016, and
revising People's Choice judging. The calendar occupies the majority of Vice President's time. This year
we have commenced the Modeller's feedback forum, that judging by initial reactions was an absolute hit. It
brings the modelling back into ACTSMS. Similarly, People's Choice has evolved into a fair peer based
judging.
With ScaleAct out of the way, attention immediately goes to assessing the event, considering the
feedback, adjusting and planning for next year - including initial thoughts regarding display themes.
So what else attracted the Committees' attention? There were a few things. Here is a snap shot.
We looked at Club shirts. There were club shirts previously, and the committee is keen to make it a
feature of the club – not just the committee.
The club was contacted by the organising committee for CANCON. They requested our assistance to
judge models in the “Flames Of War” competition. 2016 will see CANCON hold the Australian
Championships and they are keen to expand the game’s profile. The committee organised some
volunteers from the club to assist the CANCON folks.
Planning for 2016 is well underway. A letter with preferred dates has been submitted for Hellenic Club’s
consideration. However, we have been advised that due to extensive renovations, the club will need to
find a solution for a venue for both the February and March meetings. We are looking at a few options at
the moment.
Events and publicity. The club continues to participate in events that suit our demographic to increase
our profile amongst Canberra's community. The Defence Community Organisation's expo will be next on
our radar once formalities are concluded. We Committee will also seek to increase our public profile and
awareness through such media as Social Media for a. Thus, we will be looking at appointing a suitable
candidate in the near future. As an aside, the committee placed some effort into traditional media for
ScaleAct, and judging by feedback that was successful. The Cyber world is next.
Club meeting wise. We generally have around
50 to 55 members at each meeting which, I
understand, is a majority portion of financial
members at the moment. Going back to our
fundamental reason for the club, we introduced
the modeller's feedback forum and re-introduced
the workshops. At the November meeting we
had Dr David Stevens, recently retired Director of
the RAN’s Sea Power Centre, who presented an
illustrated talk on “Defending Maritime Australia,
August to December 1914”, covering what the
Royal Australian Navy did to remove the German
threat including, of course, the Sydney-Emden
ACTSMS Page 3
action. From here on in, the feedback and workshops forums will be regular features in dispersed with
guest speakers.
Well, we're in red time. The final siren isn't far off for this year. May your blades stay sharp and your
airbrush unclogged.

Treasurer’s report
Welcome to my first report as treasurer and a big thank you to Dave White for making it an easy
handover.
As with previous years we utilised online banking for annual subs with almost half being paid in this form
along with a steady number also paying in person at the monthly meeting. These subs go a long way
helping the society, for example monthly raffle prizes – there are still a number of members who aren’t
financial - I will be chasing you!
ScaleACT 15, what a weekend! It was healthy from a financial perspective, with the big bill for hiring the
hall still to come in but going by the numbers we have hit a high mark. The society also managed to grab
a few bargains for monthly raffle prizes.

From the Editorial Team
Well the end of the year is here and we hope you can look back at 2015 as a year in which we all managed to
complete at least one kit! Three kits in one year is a great achievement for DW.
2016 will see the newsletter published as a quarterly publication from now on. The decision by the committee has
not come lightly however, due to the uptake of the societies Facebook page and other forms of social media, a
monthly newsletter was no longer required. The Quarterly newsletter will still capture the day to day history and
workings of the society with more of a focus on the people and less on the stuff communicated thru Facebook.

2016 Calendar of events
The Committee have agreed to this template or skeleton program for the year, which will be populated in more
detail and adjusted as required as the year develops. We have a range of entertainment options available to us, but
anyone with any ideas for the program, or who would like to volunteer to be a Guest Modeller or has an idea for a
Modelling Workshop should contact Dave Richardson, Vice President, on 02 6260 6117 or via email at:

ScaleAct 15 wrap up
Scale ACT 15 proved to be a show that broke many records:
- 372 models entered in the competition (previous highest was 358 last year) - 96 separate entrants (previous highest was 88 entrants back in 2010) - A whopping 22 entries in the “Spitfires on Runway 13” 10th anniversary competition - 32 entries from Juniors (previous highest was 23 entries back in 2010)
We also saw a distinct improvement in the numbers of people through the doors, with over 22% more visitors over
last year’s numbers.
And, the traders generally reported improved sales, which will hopefully keep them coming back for more.
Very many thanks to all who took the time to help in the lead up to and during the show weekend, your efforts
were much appreciated!
Aside from a relatively few running improvements that shouldn’t be too difficult to implement, the following are, I
feel, the major areas that we need to address for Scale ACT in the future:
- More themed displays to increase the number of models on show - Improve show publicity (we seem to be reasonably successful at reaching out to modellers, but must do
better to attract the general public to the show) - Improve the club build table, ideally to involve workshops and presentations throughout the show
weekend -
All of the above will require the efforts of the membership as a whole - the committee alone will be unable to take
on it all.
Thanks to all who took the time to respond to our request for feedback, everything raised is being considered.

The Twins at play
RECENT MODELLING INTERACTION BETWEEN ACTSMS, FARNBOROUGH AND OTTAWA
by Dave Richardson, ACTSMS Overseas Liaison Officer
In late 2011, the ACT Scale Modellers’ Society was invited to formally affiliate or ‘twin’ with IPMS Farnborough in
UK and IPMS Ottawa in Canada, to facilitate personal contact between the members of the clubs and to provide
inspiration for modelling subjects and competitions.
While ACTSMS is not specifically an IPMS
affiliated club, we have always aspired to
the same modelling values as IPMS, and
the twinning arrangements offer an
international dimension to what we can
do. To celebrate the twinning
arrangements, at the 2011
“ScaleModelWorld” show at Telford,
IPMS Farnborough displayed members’
models illustrating the equivalent
equipment in service in the three
countries, accompanied by slide shows of
members’ models from the websites of
IPMS Ottawa and ACTSMS.
In the intervening period, ACTSMS has invited Farnborough and Ottawa members to join our occasional Blitz
Builds, which they have done with great success.
About a year ago, my OLO equivalent in IPMS Ottawa, Gary Barling, sought Canberra and Farnborough concurrence
with Ottawa’s proposal for their Commonwealth Trophy competition category at their biennial CapCon show, held
in September. They proposed a theme covering the Mediterranean theatre from 1941 to 1944, which allowed
participants to enter land, sea and air modelling subjects from all three nations.
Gary had a plan to make a Canadian Stuart tank and an RAF Spitfire for the Commonwealth trophy, and he sought
ACTSMS advice on a suitable RAN ship subject to complete the trifecta. On ACTSMS’ behalf, our local RAN guru
David Peterson provided Gary with advice on the NT 1:700 scale resin kit of HMAS Sydney, plus detail sets. Sydney
departed the Med early in 1941, so it just fitted the category. Other ACTSMS members kindly helped Gary via the
club Facebook page.
David also provided Gary with
substantial reference material
which enabled Gary to complete
HMAS Sydney in time for the
CapCon show, in which she placed
first in category for small scale
powered ships, and was placed
very highly in the Commonwealth
Trophy. Gary was very pleased with
his result, and warmly thanked
David Peterson for all his help. A
photo of Gary’s model is enclosed.
ACTSMS Page 10
The interaction between the clubs continues at both a personal and organisational level; indeed, Chris McKee from
IPMS Farnborough will be attending our December meeting. During a holiday in Canada this year, I was able to
meet up with Gary and many of the IPMS Ottawa folk at their July meeting; they were very hospitable and most
interested in hearing about ACTSMS. More recently, your Committee noted how much Farnborough had been able
to donate to a local charity following their very successful annual Modelfest show this year, and sought details from
Farnborough on the income and expenditure streams for Modelfest. The information may prove helpful for future
ScaleACTs.
The latest twin activity occurred in support of ACTSMS member Andrew Willet’s plan to modify the Tamiya 1:32 F-4
Phantom to an F-4K Royal Navy example. Andrew asked me if I could help with details on colours and markings for
the RN. I directed the enquiry to IPMS Farnborough member Peter Readman, whose father flew in the RN FAA.
Peter knows all about these things and was quickly able to supply Andrew with the necessary specifications and
model paint equivalents, enabling Andrew (with some superhuman effort!) to complete the Royal Navy Phantom in
time to place third in category
(behind his RAF F-4J) at
ScaleACT’15 (see photo).
Such is the nature of the liaison
between ACTSMS and our twins in
the UK and Canada. The
relationship between the clubs
started through personal
friendships, but has broadened
into a club-to-club level of liaison,
support and information
exchange, which can only be good
for modellers in all three clubs.
If you have any requests for information on UK or Canadian subjects and would like to tap into the resources of our
twins, please do just contact me at: [email protected] or at home on 02 6260 6117. Equally, please do
let me know if you have any ideas on how ACTSMS might celebrate the special relationship between the three
clubs or countries as the UK and Canada have done.
Vice President ACTSMS Dave Richardson

Last but not least Without this man’s hard work and devotion to the task, ScaleAct would not function as well as it does. MR Michael Grieve is a tower of energy and enthusiasm and we all look forward to ScaleAct 2016.
