*o& seat the children uietly and introduce the ne& &ords )or this story# path% +ush% pond%$rass and )lo&er. Lay the cards out one +y one and have the children repeat the &ord +ack toyou. :hen spread all the cards out in )ront o) the children and name them repeatedly &hile

the children touch the correct card.

Lay out some chairs around the room and cover them &ith a +lanket or sheet. Place a picturecard o) the ne& voca+ulary &ords in )ront o) each chair.I For example the picture o) the $rass&ill +e in )ront o) one chair or hidin$ place% the pond in )ront o) a second% etc. :ell the childrento $o and hide in the $rass. :he children run and crouch or lie do&n +ehind the chair that has

Bhen the $ira))e counts up to ten have the children close their eyes and count up to ten &ithyou as i) they &ere the $ira))e.

:he )irst time you tell the story you could either tell it strai$ht% or ask the children to do thesound e))ects o) the various animals.

:he second time throu$h the story revise colours and have the children point to or touch the

colour that you say. For example &hen you say% <is that you on the yello& path'< tell thechildren to touch somethin$ yello&. Have the coloured )eet out in )ront o) the children% or letthem touch some clothin$ or an o+ect near+y% +ut &ithout $ettin$ up and runnin$ around theroom% as you &ant them to )ocus on the story.

/nother time that you read this story $ive out pictures o) the animals and ask the children tohold up the relevant animal once they have heard you say it% +ut +e)ore you sho& the picture.For example you say% <no it(s me the spider< and the children hold up the spider% :H* youhold up the illustration &ith the spider on the yello& path. :hat &ay you are askin$ thechildren to en$a$e more actively in listenin$ and sho&in$ that they understand.

Bith the hidin$ places still scattered a+out the )loor tell the children to mime +ein$ either alion or a )ly% or any other t&o animals. =ou could play some music and a)ter ten seconds or sotell the )lies to $o and hide in the )lo&ers. :hen tell the lions to $o and hide in the +ushes.

:he children mimin$ )lies must run to a picture card o) )lo&ers and the lions run to the+ushes. :ell the children to crouch do&n and +e very uiet so they are not cau$ht.

"epeat usin$ all the di))erent animals and hidin$ places.

=ou could also pretend to +e out tryin$ to catch an animal. /s soon as the children reach thecorrect picture card they are sa)e% +ut &hile they are runnin$ around lookin$ )or the ri$ht cardthey could +e cau$ht. ake sure thou$h that you never actually catch anyone as it maycause some tears and a sense o) )ailure. t(s +est to come uite close to catchin$ them +utal&ays let the children succeed.
