“I love music and love shaking mybooty, so I thought, why not give it atry? After a month of Zumba classes, Ihad already lost 30 pounds.”

— Vickie Mathis

BREVARD — At her heaviest,Vickie Mathis weighed 410 pounds. She suffered from constantheadaches and experienced pain inher back, legs and joints.

The Port St. John resident knewshe needed to make a change.

“My journey began when the doc-tor tried to hospitalize me a yearand a half ago,” she said. “I wasalready on medications for hyper-tension, and I was a borderline dia-betic when I made this visit to heroffice. She wanted to hospitalizeme immediately… I begged her toallow me one month to work on thison my own. On that day, I decidedthat my life would be differentbecause I was going to do thingsdifferently.”

Ms. Mathis’ first steps to living ahealthier life began with walking.

“I first started walking around myblock when it was dark outside,”she said. “I was too ashamed ofpeople seeing me in the daylight.”

Then, a friend suggested she tryZumba, a Latin-inspired form ofexercise dance.

“I had heard of Zumba, but Inever even thought about trying itbecause it was a group exerciseactivity,” she said. “However, I lovemusic and love shaking my booty,so I thought, why not give it a try? After a month of Zumba classes, Ihad already lost 30 pounds.”

Today, Ms. Mathis weighs 258pounds – a weight-loss differenceof 152 pounds since August 2011.

She said her life has changedtremendously. Before, Ms. Mathiswould eat candy and ice creamwithout hesitation; now, she makesconscious decisions about thetypes of food she intakes. Andrather than being the timid womanin the back of the classroom atZumba, now, she is the instructor.

“Zumba has impacted my lifeimmensely,” she said. “I don’t look

for parking spaces closest to thedoor of a business anymore. I cannow reach down and tie my ownshoes. I can stand straight up andsee my toes. The simplest thingshave become the hugest compo-nents of my life.”

Rosalind Prescott, who teachesZumba classes at the Wickham ParkSenior Center in Melbourne, saidthat Zumba also changed her life.

After being a competitive colle-giate athlete in basketball and anational karate champion post-col-lege, sports was a huge part of herlife. But a back injury put her out ofsports and fitness for two years.

“I gained more than 35 poundsand started to fall into depression,”Ms. Prescott said. “I found my firstZumba class being offered at asmall gym in Rockledge. Although itwas hard because I was out ofshape and my muscles were notstrong, it was the only exercise thatI could modify to my level, and thatI could do, which did not hurt myback. Plus, the energy, upbeat andexciting music and instructor weresuch good motivation to make mewant to try again and come back formore.”

Ms. Prescott said that Zumbaclasses are beneficial because theworkouts engage many muscles, often while the participant is bliss-fully unaware that he or she isincorporating traditional fitnessmoves like squats and lunges intodancing, which tones and tightensthe body.

“The class gets your heart beat upso you can burn from 400 to 1,000calories per class with one hourwhizzing by,” Ms. Prescott said. “Iusually burn around 800 calorieswhen I teach a class. Workouts thatfeel like work are hard to get excitedabout. But Zumba is so enjoyable

BREVARD — While many clubs, businesses and organizations held par-ties throughout the past holiday sea-son, one organization centered its holi-day luncheon around giving back tothe community.

The Seaside Piecemakers Quilt Club,a Satellite Beach-based group of quil-ters who use their craft to serve thecommunity, handmade 33 lap quiltsfor children in need. At the group’s holi-day luncheon in December, the quiltswere given to Brevard Recue Mission, anonprofit aiming to break the cycle ofhomelessness among mothers andchildren in the area, as well as itemsthat the organization were in need of.

“(Brevard Rescue Mission) hasalmost run out of personal hygiene andcleaning items from their pantry,” saidJudy Pacificador, publicity chair-woman for the Seaside PiecemakersQuilt Club. “The quilts will be given tothe children for comfort during theupcoming colder months.”

Founded in 1981, the Seaside Piece-makers Quilt Club, part of the NationalQuilting Association, has 300 quiltmakers spanning from Barefoot Bay to

Cocoa. The club meets regularly withinvited speakers and special classes atHeritage Isle Club House on the fourthWednesday of each month, exceptNovember and December. From thisgroup, about 10 smaller Quilt Circlesmeet twice per month at several Bre-vard Public Libraries or quilt shops inthe area, where the actual quilt makingis performed.

In addition to giving back to thecommunity, members of the SeasidePiecemakers Quilt Club enjoy quiltingalongside one another.

“Members seek an environment ofsharing, encouragement, friendship, learning and community service,” Ms.Pacificador said.

She said that this year, the womenresponsible for creating the quilts forBrevard Rescue Mission had lots of fun, even while donating their own suppliesand dipping into their personal bankaccounts to complete the quilts.

“Hours upon hours of sewing, bothat the circle gathering and at home, ishard to quantify,” Ms. Pacificador said.“But the good feeling of being able tohelp a community is evident, and it is

the foremost motivation for theseladies to give of their time to the cause. That sense of reward is priceless.”

In addition to the quilts, Ms. Pacifi-cador estimated that the cash dona-tions, used to purchase items that Bre-vard Rescue Misison will needthroughout the year, added up to morethan $1,500.

Each year, the club donates items toin-need organizations at its holidayluncheons, such as Daily Bread, Gene-sis House, Hacienda Ranch and more.

“For these Seaside members, whothemselves may be on fixed incomes, their desire and generosity to con-tribute to this cause speaks volumesabout their sense of giving and good-will to all,” Ms. Pacificador said.

Currently, the Seaside PiecemakersQuilt Club is at its maximum amountof members at 300. The club invitesinterested applicants to join as spacebecomes available, via its website,www.seasidepiecemakers.com.

For those looking to start a lightfitness regimen, Ms. Mathis advisespeople to invest in a good pair ofshoes that will offer the supportthey need to begin. In addition toZumba, she recommends walkingor swimming, as they are both safe, moderate exercises for overweightindividuals.

As for food consumption, Ms.Mathis said she steers clear ofbreads, pasta, rice, potatoes andanything with sugar in it. Her dietconsists of mainly protein: meat, vegetables, cheese and eggs. And forthe first eight weeks of her weight-loss routine, she only consumedwater.

“Reward yourself once a weekwith that cup of coffee that you gaveup,” she said. “Keep your mind on

what you eat. My mind is ponderingfood all day long. I’m still addictedto food, but I only eat what will bebeneficial to my health.”

Ms. Mathis said to overcome over-weight and unhealthy lifestyles, thehardest step to take is the first one:making a commitment to oneself tolose weight and get healthy.

“It has to be a personal decision,”she said.

Now, she said she feels the bestshe has ever felt in her life.

“At age 43, I feel somewherearound 25 years old,” she said.“I amso proud of the plus-size womanthat I am.”

“I use Zumba as a tool to reach outto people – not only the overweightor obese, but to anyone who is look-ing to overcome any obstacles intheir lives. The bottom line is that

the mind has to be made up. Youhave to focus on what you want, anddon’t lose focus, even if you go offtrack for a spell,” she said.

Health and vitality with herbsHERB CORNERDiet, exercise and rest have

always been essential for themaintenance of good health.

Now, more than ever, herbs arenecessary for the maintenance of ourhealth, especially with so much stressand toxicity from our environment. Forthousands of years, plants have beenused to increase energy, boost theimmune system, provide nutrition, enhance mental clarity, increasephysical stamina and to enliven thelibido. There are thousands of plantsthat have these abilities, but for thesake of space and time, I have stoppedat five.

Astragalus, as an energy tonic herb, helps the body adapt to physicalexertion and stress, and for peoplewith low energy, it helps boost metabo-lism. It has been used for more than4,000 years in China and it is still usednow as an herb to strengthen theimmune system, fighting bacteria and

viruses. Astragalus is especially goodfor chronic weakness to the lungs orfor those who have taken manyantibiotics and are now susceptible toinfections.

Garlic also has the ability to fightbacteria that have become resistant toantibiotics; it also fights viruses, fungi,Candida and yeast. One of the reasonsit can do this is because its enzymesdetoxify the body of carcinogens. In thecirculatory system, regular use of garliccan raise HDL’s, lower LDL’s, as well aslower triglyceride levels, and for manypeople, it helps lower blood pressure.

Turmeric, when taken regularly, actsas a powerful anti-inflammatory; forsome it works safer and much better

than long-term use of cortisonebecause it protects the flora of thedigestive system and the liver. Studieson Turmeric have shown it to be fivetimes stronger than Vitamin E in itsantioxidant properties and to bebeneficial to dementia and highcholesterol. Be aware that a largeamount of Turmeric inhibits bloodclots; if you are taking anticoagulantmedications, you need to talk to yourphysician.

Dandelion is a highly nutritiousplant, one that is packed with iron, making it good for anemia. As adiuretic, it removes excess fluid fromthe body, but provides the neededpotassium that can be lost when takingpharmaceutical water pills. Dandelionis also used to support the liver andgallbladder in the removal of wasteproducts; this detoxification providesrelief for gout, eczema and psoriasis.

Ginseng is probably one of the most

popular vitality-enhancing herbs. When used consistently, Ginseng helpsthe body adapt to mental and physicalstress, increasing stamina and physicalperformance rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit. As an immunebooster, it helps the body heal fasterand more efficiently, promotinglongevity by increasing your ability toresist disease. It also enhances sexualstamina and desire and improvesmemory and learning skills by improv-ing circulation throughout the body.

It’s when we are free of toxins, receiving nutrients, that we experienceenergy and feel our best. With theamount of stress and toxicity weexperience from day to day, now, morethan ever, we should be protecting ourbodies with herbs.

One-of-a-kind barbecue on the beachDININGINDIALANTIC — For elite bar-

beque lovers living in a beach com-munity, it is a very rare occasion tocome across a barbecue dish that isboth delicious and satisfying, espe-cially for those who have experiencedthe very best in barbecue.

Among the very best, some maysay, is Carolina-barbeque, a world-renowned Southern delicacy thatincludes slowly roasted meat takenfrom all over the pig. The taste is one-of-a-kind, and cheap imitators willnever fool a true barbeque connois-seur.

Indialantic’s Coach’s Grill willnever be considered an imitator.

Located on the southern side ofFifth Avenue, Coach’s Grill offers trulyauthentic and delicious Carolina bar-becue, where even the biggest barbe-cue critic can rejoice.

For nearly two months, owner

Ricky Michaelsen has offered freshdishes to his customers in a true Car-olina style, something he said no oneelse in Brevard can offer.

“People have other styles (of cook-ing barbecue), where they want tocook this and smoke that, but realCarolina Barbecue is roasted like apig-picking,” he said. “We use all ofthe pig because every bit of the pig isgood. Our meat, which is apple cider-vinegar based, comes fresh and deliv-ered straight to the Melbourne Air-port every three days.”

Mr. Michaelsen, who has ownedfive other restaurants in Virginia, named his restaurant after his 31years of experience, coaching basket-ball. During his time at Old Domin-ion College in Virginia, he and histeammates won the Division IINational Championship. Currently,

In addition to the many restaurantshe operated, Mr. Michaelsen alsoowned a catering business. It wasthrough his catering business, hesaid, that Mr. Michaelsen truly real-ized the impact Carolina Barbecuehad on his customers.

“My catering business used to caterauctions for towing companies, where they would have people comeand bid on wrecked or abandonedvehicles,” he said. “At the auctions,200-300 people would come and wewould sell about 300-500 sandwich-

best cheeseburgers you’ll ever eat.“They have more grease than most

cheeseburgers, but not enough to getmessy on your shirt,” Mr. Michaelsensaid. “It may not be the healthiest, but it makes a great burger.”

New technologyREHABILITATIONThe new year always brings a multi-

tude of Baby Boomers into a personalpledge for wellness. Each year, tech-nology continues to make rehabilita-tion and fitness just a little easier.

The latest exercise equipment uses“smart card” technology. Now, youdon’t have to remember your lastworkout routine. By sliding a card intothe exercise equipment’s monitor, themachine automatically sets up theprevious repetitions and resistance. The Smart Card system is for exerciseplanning, recording, feedback andinstructions.

Working out with air resistanceFor the active and aging population,

air resistance is the latest advent. It’sbeen proclaimed to make exercisemovement feel smoother and safer toexecute, and the workout is more

muscle specific with less wear and tearon the joints.

Machines designed for lifestylesBecause the human body moves in

all planes with varied resistances, thenewest technologies operate tri-dimensionally through any possiblemovement patterns. Rehab is not justlifting a dumbbell anymore andrepeating three sets of 10.

Therapeutic safetyMany seniors can’t tolerate their

entire joint’s range of motion. Thosewho are fresh out of surgery or whohave painful arthritic restrictions cannow rely on the latest built-in restric-tors. Movement limits can now be setfor each person’s comfort and toler-ance. The latest equipment has heartrate monitors built into the handle-

bars to help determine safe toleranceto exercise. With advanced brake tech-nology found on newer recumbentelliptical machines, there’s less jarringof movement and it is safer for jointsto handle an increase or decrease inresistance.

Easier accessRehabilitation for seniors mandates

comfortable and larger seats thatslope slightly upward for maximumcomfort. The other improvements areas simple as ergonomically designedswivel seats and sloped handlebarsthat also swivel and are designed toincrease ease of access.

Space-age technology from NASAThe latest, newest treadmill called

the AlterG, encircles the body from thewaist down, with differential air pres-

sure technology. Therapists can actu-ally calibrate the precise un-weighingof the body up to 80 percent. Thismeans that if a patient can’t walk, dueto pain with weight bearing, thenweight is taken out of the equation. It’salso connected to a viewing monitorto allow the therapist to give instantcues for faster learning through themonitor’s feedback. Because its low-impact, many would say it’s animprovement for seniors who want amore comfortable exercise experi-ence.

Melbourne Terrace RehabilitationCenter offers comprehensive rehabili-tative outpatient and inpatient servic-es for short or long- term care and islocated at 251 Florida Ave., Melbourne.
