Zephyrhills had it on cruise control in the first half against Gulf last week and then put the foot to the floor after halftime to come away with a dominant 82-48 victory.

Dale Palmer, who returned to coach the Lady Bulldogs basketball program this season, stepped down last week for health reasons, according to Athletic Director Bruce Cimorelli.

Following his resignation, junior varsity coach Tawnya Booker-Brown was named to coach both the JV and varsity teams. The players were informed last Thursday afternoon and that same evening the team suffered a 56-23 loss to Gulf.

Zephyrhills got back on track Monday night, dominating Cypress Creek 49-12 in the team’s first home game without Palmer.

“They gave their heart and they played much better,” Booker-Brown said.

Palmer’s departure came as a shock to Cimorelli.“I had no idea,” Cimorelli said. “It was very

unexpected.”Palmer’s name has been synonymous with basketball

in Zephyrhills as he paced the hardwood for more than 30 years. His career tipped off in 1975 at the former Zephyrhills Junior High School (now R.B. Stewart Middle School) where he coached 7th and 8th grade boys and girls teams.

He moved up to Zephyrhills High School where he coached at the junior varsity and varsity levels for both boys’ and girls’ basketball. He retired from teaching in 2007 but continued to coach for three more years before hanging up his whistle. It didn’t stay on the hook long as he came back for a season to coach at Centennial Middle School.

quarter, coach Mike Novak’s squad held a 20-point advantage at 59-39.

“We’re young and we’re like a rollercoaster,” Novak said. “We’re up and down. We’re not consistent. That’s what we talked about at halftime. In the first half, we weren’t picking up our guys

defensively.“Everything started on the defensive

end … we were hustling.”With 5:04 to play, Zephyrhills went on

a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 30 points

at 73-43. “We were just focused and ready to

play,” Marchman said. “We needed to tighten up. Our defense was better in the second half.”

Dante Marchman goes up and through a pair of Gulf defenders on his way to a 17-point night, powering the Bulldogs to their seventh straight victory.

Derico Quiles goes to the basket for two of his game-high 26 points against Gulf last Thursday night.

Cartrell Strong looks focused as he heads to the basket in the Bulldogs’ 82-48 win against Gulf.

Yule Night Time Run Lights Up Fairways

Nearly 100 runners and walkers decorated in Christmas lights, neon and their favorite holiday garb lit up Saturday night around Silver Oaks for the inaugural Yule Light Up the Night Fun Run to benefit the Zephyrhills Bulldogs Booster Club.

Organized by cross country Coach James Kretschmar, the event featured a one-mile run/walk and a 5K race.

“The biggest races are holiday races and there are no night races like this anywhere,” Kretschmar said. “We want to start a new holiday tradition in Zephyrhills.”

Cindy Wood/Earl Ball Win Singles ChampionshipsThe Central District

held their Singles Championships at the Lakeland Shuffle Club’s courts last Friday and Zephyrhills brought home half of the titles. Cindy Wood picked just the right time to win her first district championship, which places her at the top of the Women Amateurs. She had only two matches that went to three games – the quarters and the championship match. She used the clear and score technique to

perfection. Earl Ball didn’t lose a single game en route to the Pro Men’s title.

Strong/Ball, Leger/Walker Win State Championships

Henry Strong of Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club helped Earl Ball win his 114th state championship at Betmar on Dec. 12. The duo scraped by the first match and fought hard to win the fourth match (quarterfinals) but, as sometimes happens, they rolled through the semis and the championship match. They lost only two games in the tournament. Judy Leger (Betmar Shuffleboard Club), and Katy Walker (Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club) won the women’s championship but they flirted with disaster as they were pressed to three games in four of their five

matches. Walker showed off her precision shooting by winning all four lags for color giving them the advantage of playing the best color in each match.

Houghtaling/Ruess and McNeil/Blair Win

John Houghtaling (ZSC) and DeLane Ruess (BSC) won the Pre-Christmas Central District Pro Draw Shuffleboard Tournament at the Eighth Street courts on Dec. 8. They nearly met their Waterloo in the quarterfinals. The match went three games and they trailed by 58 points at the halfway point in the games. With only eight frames to go half the hammers (last shot) belonged to the opponents who got a bit too complacent. Houghtaling and Ruess came charging back and won by nine points. They didn’t lose any other game in the tournament.

Don McNeil and Doug Blair, both of Betmar, won

the Amateur Championship. They fought hard to win every match and would have been gone in the quarterfinals but McNeil executed a “Hail Mary” shot. The opponents had the winning block on the board and the point all jammed up. All McNeil could do was wind up and fire away, hoping for the best and, don’t you know, he cleared everything out and wound up on the 10 with the winning score.

Former ‘Leap Frog’ Writes Book

Retired Navy Capt. Norman H. Olson visited Skydive City on Dec. 10 to promote and autograph copies of his recently released book.

“Air Capabilities Of The U.S. Navy Seals A History Of Innovation” is published by Phoca Press LLC and is available online or through bookstores.

Olson wore a baseball cap with the Navy Leap Frog inscription on the back. Leap Frog is a nickname for military parachutists who are also scuba divers.

Several active duty and reserve members of today’s Special Operations Forces, including Army Rangers and Navy Seals, joined in a parachute jump at Skydive City to welcome Olson, 86, on a bitterly cold afternoon.

It was Olson’s second promotional event for the book; the first was held a day earlier in The Villages in Central Florida, where he currently lives.

His book chronicles the air capabilities of the Sea Air and Land operation that the Navy organized in January 1962.

Olson, a 1953 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, had been a member of an underwater demolition team that was a predecessor to the SEALS and was an accomplished Navy parachutist. Olson led the first detachment of frogmen that went to Fort Benning, Ga., in 1959.

He discovered his specialty after he joined the U.S. Navy and saw a group of buff young men surrounded by beautiful women while he was at a training event in California.

“What kind of job do they have?” he asked. When he heard they were Navy divers, also known as frogmen, he said, “That’s the job for me.”

His first recorded scuba dive was at Cape Hallett Antartica during Operation Deep Freeze in December 1956. Cape Hallett was the site of a base jointly established by the United States and New Zealand to monitor weather conditions in that desolate, frigid

portion of the world.Olson made 2,200 jumps during his military

career, which saw him rise through the ranks from to lieutenant commander to commander before attaining the rank of captain.

He was deployed to Southeast Asia and Vietnam in 1963 where he conducted combat operations as commander of Underwater Demolition Team 11. Olson subsequently formed and led the UDT-SEAL Para-Team (East), which adopted the name Chuting Stars.

A Navy War College graduate, Olson previously served in the Pentagon and was Chief of Staff for Operations for the Naval Institute Warfare Command Atlantic. He was the first Navy SEAL to command a major short installation, the Naval Amphibious Base Norfolk. He was also Commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group Two and ended his military career as the first Chief of Staff of the newly formed Joint Special Operations Command.

Olson is still recovering from a stroke he suffered in the summer of 2015. Tom Hawkins, a retired U.S. Navy commander who had 24 years of active service as a career SEAL and Naval Special Warfare Officer, coauthored the book with Olson.

R.B. Stewart Honored For Football SuccessZephyrhills Mayor Gene Whitfield recognized the

R.B. Stewart Middle School football team on Friday for winning 41 consecutive football games and seven conference titles.

Their impressive winning streak spans seven years. The mayor presented a proclamation at the school

to the team for their outstanding performance. The

football team, other student athletes, cheerleaders, members of the band, school and district staff attended the presentation to congratulate the Bulldogs for their outstanding performance and amazing winning streak.

Although nationwide middle school records can be difficult to find, USA Football shows that only five high schools in the country have more consecutive wins, and one has the same number, according to a press release from the Pasco County School District.

Celebrating their success at a special ceremony Friday were, from left, current RBSMS football coach Greg Mathis (winning seasons 2014-2017); Pasco County Schools Board Member, District 1, Alan Altman; Zephyrhills Mayor Gene Whitfield; and former RBSMS football coach Norman Scheuerman (winning seasons 2010 -2013).

Saint Leo University Receives Top School Recognition For the fifth consecutive year, Saint Leo

University has earned recognition from Military Advanced Education & Transition as a leader in the nation for providing education to those who are serving or who have served in the armed forces. Military Advanced Education & Transition awarded Saint Leo University the designation of a Top School in its 2018 Guide to Colleges & Universities, measuring best practices in military and veteran education. The guide is to be released this month and is available online at www.mae-kmi.com.

The 2018 guide presents results of a

questionnaire of the military-supportive policies enacted at hundreds of institutions including private, public, for-profit, not-for-profit, four-year, and two-year colleges. From community colleges to state universities, online universities and nationally known centers of higher learning, MAE&T’s guide provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to the men and women in uniform.

Schools are not ranked in the guide, but must obtain a minimum score in the survey to be named a Top School.

To be identified as a Top School, Saint Leo exhibited military-supportive actions such as having a veterans’ center, financial incentives for military-affiliated students, counselors for veterans, and more. This year, higher education institutions were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support, and online support services.

In addition to University Campus in St. Leo, students are educated at 35 teaching locations, including many located on military bases, as well as online. Saint Leo

teaches at one of the largest naval bases in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, as well as at other military bases in Virginia, Florida, California, Texas, South Carolina, and Mississippi. Saint Leo is committed to educating military personnel, veterans, and their families wherever they may be – even if they are deployed.

“Saint Leo’s ability to be anywhere you need us to be has been the foundation of our long-standing history of serving the military community,” said Dr. Melanie Storms, senior vice president of WorldWide Operations.
