Patience is a virtue that very few people have. Like human animals are impulsive and their actions can be twitchy making it difficult to capture. Try to be silent and patient and this will help you capture candid emotions and behavior.

Always be ready for action. Be alert and ready for any kind of disturbance around you. Keep your camera and equipment ready at all time so that you do not miss that moment.

Focusing right, in todays time most cameras come with an auto focus still people are shooting out of focus and getting blurred images. This usually happens with lack of understanding of the focussing area and points. To get razor sharp images make sure you focus manually and in the right part of the frame.

For composing the best shot make sure you are focusing on the eye on the animals, this is best when you are looking for a portrait of the animal and not wanting to capture a wide angle shot. Try spot focusing for better shots. Manual focussing is a tough task as it requires a lot of practice so its better you let the camera do the job.

The biggest thumb rule is to keep the base shutter speed at 1/500 or faster. Most common problems with animals is that the image becomes blurred when using a slow shutter speed. Keeping the minimum shutter speed as it helps to freeze the movements of animals and ensures that even quick actions can be captured.
