Please read all registration and refund policies carefully. Registration should be made as soon as possible; class size is limited and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure enrollment, please register at least one week prior to the start date of the class. You will be notified if the class for which you are registering is full. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled – you will be notified likewise. To view our extensive class offerings, please click here.

PAYMENT: Full payment is due upon registration. Checks, cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) are accepted. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks.

REGISTRATION

CONTACTIN PERSON: Office hours are 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Fees may be paid using check, charge card or cash.

BY PHONE: Registrations with credit card payments may be made by phone. Call SSVA (723-7395) with class information, charge card number, expiration date and cardholder’s name.

REFUNDS: Registration fees are refundable up until 14 days prior to the start date of the class, less a $20 accounting fee. Refunds cannot be made after this deadline. To withdraw from a class and request a refund, advise the Sawtooth Registrar by email at registrar@sawtooth.org 14 days or more before the class start date. Failure to attend sessions and/or verbal notification alone will not be considered as an official notice of withdrawal.

CREDIT POLICY: Students who notify the Sawtooth Registrar of withdrawal 14 days or more before the class start date may choose a credit for the full amount of the class in lieu of a refund. Credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash. Credits can be transferred to another student by notifying the Sawtooth Registrar at registrar@sawtooth.org.

CANCELLATION: Sawtooth reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment, and to change class instructors when necessary. If Sawtooth cancels a class for any reason, each registered participant will be informed as soon as possible and will be extended the opportunity to transfer to another class. Any participant who elects not to transfer may choose between a full refund or a credit in the same amount. Please note that credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Sawtooth offers need-based scholarships for adults and children of all ages. Seniors aged 60 and over may qualify for tuition assistance from the Bealle Family Scholarship Fund. Visit www.sawtooth.org/classes and click on “scholarships” for more information.

485. Pastel ElementsIn four classes students will explore the four elements through chalk pastel. Each class will culminate with a finished work of art that explores one of the four elements: Air, Fire, Earth and Water. Inspired by nature, students will gain a rich understanding of this flexible and forgiving media to create exciting works of art that bring the elements of nature to life! 493. Botanical Art by Season: Edge of Winter The stark beauty of late winter is found in the textures and muted colors of decaying leaves, dried plants, as well as fallen seedpods, nuts and cones. PRINTMAKING401. Multi-block Woodcut In this special woodcut class up to three of the same size wood boards are used to cut different but somewhat related designs. Each board is then inked in a different color. Prints are made by combining any two to three boards printed on a series of papers through a press. Color-blending, transparent-layering, and special effects using natural woodgrains will be explored. 492. Encaustic CollagraphThis is a painterly monoprint method that uses a clear plastic plate that we will apply hot encaustic wax medium to with brushes. Relief texture can be created in this cooled wax with incising lines, scraping the wax, etc. This wax surface is then rolled with water based printing ink to create a print on paper using the press. 364. Round Robin Class: Crepe WeavesCrepe weaves represent one type of structure that is a bit more complex than basic twills, allowing for expanded patterns within a four-harness structure. 5241. Creating by Forming Metal - Part OneShell forming is a wonderful way to create three-dimensional structures for jewelry and sculpture from flat sheet metal. Using one hard tool, usually a hammer, and one resilient tool, a wood

or plastic form, one can rapidly form metal sheet into desired shapes. Explore the fundamentals of sheet metal behavior and gain an understanding of the relationship between technique, tools and resulting forms. Specific techniques will include synclastic sinking to make a bracelet and later to make a bead. In addition we will use anticlastic raising to make a bracelet and other objects. These methods are also used to make transitions from one form to another resulting in more complex structures. Emphasis is on the great potential for forming in many ways and using these forms to create jewelry and sculptural objects. We will be working in the context of the new book Creative Metal Forming written by Betty Helen Longhi and her co-author Cynthia Eid. There is no requirement of skills to take the workshop but it is helpful to have had some experience with basic metal working skills such as sawing, soldering and buffing. 5242. Creating by Forming Metal - Part TwoThis workshop will cover how to make spiculums, a process for making tapered tubes and decking, a way to make hollow forms called multi-shells. Make each type of spiculum, as well as a variation that creates an undulating seam line. Also, we will experiment with making spiculums that combine both synclastic and anticlastic methods to create a more complex form. In this new arena, there are endless possibilities for making bracelets, collars, earrings, beads, vessels and abstract sculptural forms. A multi-shell is a form resulting from soldering two or more forms together to make a hollow structure. In this workshop we will be making a Bi-Shell. Choose a spiculum from the early part of the workshop which has been partially closed to be the primary form. This is usually the deepest or most complex portion of the object. Then the deck, or secondary form, is created to fit against the open edges of the primary form and the two are soldered together. This is an excellent way to make hollow rings and bracelets as well as vases, teapots, and sculptures. This workshop is appropriate for students who have had an initial course in metalsmithing and preferably an introduction to basic shell forming. PRIMITIVE WEAPONS 9701. Making Primitive Weapons - SelfbowSome of the oldest primitive weapons discovered have been Neolithic wood bows. A selfbow is made from a single piece of wood without lamination. Master Bowyer Dane Snodgrass will introduce the hand tools and techniques needed to craft such an historic weapon. Classic Weapons: The AtlatlAs course instructor Dane Snodgrass says, creating an atlatl – a transitional weapon between the spear and bow and arrow - is a very “Neolithic” introduction to both woodworking and a classic primitive weapon. At the end of the workshop, students would have a historically correct, functioning primitive weapon. Pyrography (woodburning) is very detailed, similar to a pen and ink drawing, yet easy to learn. If you can trace lines, you can create beautiful drawings using this burning technique. ParkingThe parking lot across Spruce Street for the Milton Rhodes Center is a self-pay system that takes credit/debit cards and cash but does not give change. The lot is owned and operated by The Arts Council of WSFC. Please be aware that you have other parking options such as at a meter on the street (25 cents per hour) and on numerous other pay surface lots and parking garages within one to two blocks of the school. On weekends and after 6pm, there is no charge for on-street metered parking.
