To say that the members of the Orange County Wood- workers Association are a generous lot is a lot like saying that a Ferrari is ok transportation, if you can’t get a horse. Our member’s generosity knows no bounds. Not only did our members donate some fantastic items for our Annual Fund Raising Auction, but they also dug very deep into their pockets to pur- chase almost everything that was donated. It was quite an exciting night, and we had that dap- per man about town, Mr. Craig Chambers, as our Emcee, and Auctioneer par excel- lence leading the way. He does have a way of squeezing everything he can out of an item even when a few of you decided to bid in two dollar increments in an attempt to prolong all of the fun we were having. I want to thank Victor Cohn, and Ed Straub for organizing the Auc- tion and my thanks also goes out to all of the people who volunteered their services. I would try to name all of you, but I’m sure I would forget someone, so suffice it to say that you were all fabulous. As most of you know November is election time, and the accusations having been flying fast and furious, but there is no truth to the rumor that the Ol’ Prez has been harboring radical elements of the AARP in his basement. That would be pretty hard to do considering most houses in California are on a slab. In any case the nominees for the Board of Directors are: President; James Santhon, Vice President; Chester Maharaj, Treasurer; Ralph Crowther, Secretary; Ed Straub. After announcing the nominees at the meeting our Nominations Chair, Mr. Bill Rogers, will open the floor for nominations from the membership. Please remember to ask the person you wish to nominate for office be- forehand as to whether they wish to run for office, or not. As of this writing, we’re not sure whether our November presenter will be the “Unknown Turner”, or the “Mystery Woody Refurbishing Guy”, but no matter who the presenter may be let’s not have a repeat of the unfortunate rotten vegetable throwing incident of years past. It’s just not in keep- ing with our high social standing, or is it? Our Christmas Party will be held on Friday December 12 th 2008 in the large hall at the Tustin Senior Center. First of all I would like to thank all who contributed to and attended the An-nual Auction. A special thanks to Ed, Vic and Craig for a very smooth "RUN".

We are going to have our "Mystery" Woodworker/Turner , our one and only President James Santhon. James will definitely entertain all of you on the 6th of November. His years of experience and his expertise in his work will be an eye catcher. James has been working on the "WOODY PROJECT" which he will share with us.

We will not have a meeting on the first Thursday of December because of our Christmas Party and also, no meeting in January because of New Year. We will however have our nor-mal meeting on February 5th 2009. Our speaker will be Wayne from "Battery Builders" I will give you an update soon.

I had the pleasure of being at the "Straka Chuck" workshop which Al Whitcomb and Victor Cohn had organ-ized at Al's workshop in Huntington Beach. I took some photographs which I thought I will share with all of you. I would like to thank all who at-tended and helped. If you ever have the opportu-nity to attend these workshops please do, I really learnt a lot. Now I have to make a bowl to see how it works.

Shavings President’s Message Dick Foreman

One of the Turners Club Nominations Committee, Craig Chambers, presented Victor Cohn to the membership as the candidate for President of the Orange County Woodturners Assoc. for the year of 2009. No other nominations were made from the floor, and Victor stated that he is willing to take on the post. The formal election will take place at the November 20th meeting. As most of you know, Victor has been very active in many aspects of the club for the past several years. He has been a significant member of OCWA and OCWT committees. You do not give Vic a task and then stand in his way as he does run with the ball. Vic will do a great job! Do not forget that the Annual Woodturning, Pen Turning, and Fred Adam Memorial Polychromatics Contests will be held at the November 20th meeting. Judges are lined up as are members to log in your pieces. The prizes have been established and the Treasurer is salivating in anticipation of writing all those checks. I do hope your turnings are completed or nearing completion. This is our big turning event of the year so please have some fun and join in. I want to wish all of you, “Good Luck”! Be sure to sign up for the Cindy Drozda all-day professional demonstration scheduled for Jan 31st. Contact Art Fitzpatrick at [email protected] or phone him at (562) 421-6992 to get on the list. And please keep an eye on the newsletter and web site calendars since there

is a lot planned. Bill Haskell provided us with another great club demonstration on October 16th. Bill showed us how he accomplishes his beautiful and very smooth finishes on his turned pieces. Bill also showed us his hollowing out techniques and the various tools he has made or acquired over the past years. Great demonstration Bill; thanks a lot! The November 20th meeting Club Demonstrator will be Bruce Lewellyn. Bruce will be demonstrating the making of Christmas Ornaments. I have seen some of his recent ornaments and you will not want miss this demonstration. There were eight “Utilitarian Salad Bowls” entered in the Challenge. Ross Gilroy’s gorgeous sycamore bowl won the gift certificate from Craft Supplies.

There will not be a Challenge or Show and Tell at the November 20th meeting due to the Annual Turning Contests. The Annual Tool and Art Auction is over and went very well. A little over $3,600 was collected and your shops look better and less cluttered now. The Turners Club gets 25% of these monies to support our activi-ties, i. e., room rent, Pen Programs, prizes and miscellaneous costs we incur through-out the year. We are still working on assembling a list of all the Past Turners Presidents. No one realized this would be such a difficult task, but the Turners existence goes back to 1990. I am also in the process of making a list of Turners owned equipment scattered around the area and members shops. I will be con-tacting some of you to help complete this list or contact meat (714) 637-6175 if you have information for either list. Have a great time turning!

OCWA Annual Auction Ed Straub

As you all know the club has been using a pamphlet to pre-sent the clubs message to potential new members for sev-eral years. This pamphlet contains a lot of information about the club. During the 2008 Orange County Fair Al Missbrenner observed that a number of people were picking up copies of the pamphlet at the Ga-loot's booth and discussing it with one of the Docents or Demonstra-tors. They were mostly interested in getting a few primary facts. Like when and where do we meet and do we have a website. Since Al did not fall off no turnip truck, it was obvious to him that we should have a way of presenting this data in a more convenient fashion. His sugges-tion was that we should have a business card with our logo on the front and the data on the back with a little room left over to pencil in a couple more facts if necessary. This way we could supply the informa-tion in a way that fit the persons pocket and would help them in find-ing us after the fair, woodworking show, casual contact, etc. Well, as all things go, the board authorized an initial acquisition of the proposed cards. We received a box of same just before the annual auction and they were available for members at the Bidder's sign up ta-ble. More are available for our members to use when asked about the club. They will be available near the sign in sheet at the General and Turners meetings.

We had a GREAT turn out for our Toy Making Workshop on Saturday, Octo-ber 4th, when 30 people showed up to help. Once again we had some new

members come and join in the fun. Jeff and Maureen Hasbrouck came all the way from Long Beach. Rex Bullar came round about from England to get involved, (plus his 14 year old Labrador made lots of new friends.) Two of my former students, Jon Lantz and Geordi Darby from Lutheran High were here to help.

I know that many of our faithful workers are dealing with health issues, but they are still "hanging in there", and continue to make this a priority in their lives. Thank you all for your commitment in keeping the toy program going. We are finishing very strong again this year, with over 4,500 toys completed thus far. If you have toys which you are working on and plan to give them to me, so they can be included in this year's total, PLEASE call me at 1-714-637-2912 or e-mail [email protected] Thanks again for all that you do for the special "at risk" children. Please keep Jim Balestreri in your thoughts and prayers as he continues with his Chemo treat-ments. Bill Rogers, Interim Toy Chairman

I had a great time at the auction last month. Our little garage sale tables made over $300 so we really did well for a few tables of odds and ends. And I really enjoyed talking to you all. I think we have one of the best groups of wood workers around and I am proud to say I am a member of this club. You all are one of the nicest caring groups of individuals for the children and the troops of soldiers serving our nation. Thank you very much for your participation and your generosity for those in need. Though I do miss seeing Jim Ballestreri, I hope he is doing well in spite of his trials. I’m sure his contribution to the club is missed while he goes through his treatments. Good news - We will be having a bonus drawing this month. It is a $100.00 Gift card from Rockler. I already have a number of yellow tickets sold, but you are welcome to buy more any time you like. I hold on to them until the bonus drawing and then I start the pile over again. I usually would try to hold on to the card until the new year but since we missed one from Woodcraft due to their break in I decided to go ahead and have one this month,

for an early Holidays gift. The winner will be able to get something before Thanksgiving if they want. Good Luck. As usual, if you would like to email me and tell me something you would like to see offered in the raffle, I would like to hear from you… Send your note to: [email protected] SUBJECT: OCWA Raffle Very important: include OCWA RAFFLE in the subject. I have made an email filter to find messages with OCWA in the subject. I wont get it unless you do and I don’t want to miss hearing from you so I can pick out things based on your preferences.

I am adding more pics from a walk on Crystal Cove Beach, plus my projects at home if you are interested in my photos. I would have brought my vanities in for show and tell, but doing it this way is much easier on my back. Just do a Google Search for cheri_lm and links to my pictures and albums come up, click on the one that says pictures and albums and from there you get a page of all of my albums. Feel free to browse any of my albums, they are all available to the public.

I want to give a special thanks to Guy Willacker of Rockler in Orange for our bonus card this month, espe-cially after his generosity the last couple months, it was very kind of him to be willing to help us out. And thanks to Ingko Oetomo at Woodcraft in Stanton, I know he works very hard and wants to help when he can. He helps out at the classes at Cerritos quite a lot, and we all appreciate it. And thanks again to Jim Anderson, Anderson International Trading Company on Tustin Avenue in Anaheim for all his donations of time and care for Ruthe and the Troops. We really appreciate it, they really ap-preciate it too. And thanks to Joe Lomax of Austin Hardwoods. I didn’t make it down to visit the store this month, I hope before the meeting I can. And I’d like to visit Western Tool also, they

really have a nice selection of equipment going there. I picked up a really nice set of Millwakee hole saws a couple months ago. They worked out very nice. I used them on my solid surface tops. I’ll see you all at the next meeting, until then keep up the good work. I always really enjoy our show and tell.

Hello Ruthe, My name is Saul Mendo, I am currently Stationed onboard the USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76. And the reason I am emailing you is to THANK YOU for all you do in The Freedom Pen Project, I just got one of your pens and I thought it was such a great thing and great gift from you guys and gals. I can not imagine the great deal of time you guys and gals spent making the pens, and really they are great. So from the bottom of my heart and behalf of all the other fellas that got pens....I would like to THANK YOU again. A bit about myself, I am a Chief and I been in the Navy for 14 years, as I stated before I am assigned to the USS Ronald Regan that is home ported in San Diego. I am from Huntington Park California, so I am just up the I-5 about 30 minutes (with no traffic) My job in the ship is a Yellow shirt or in plain text I am in charge of all the launching and recovery of aircraft on the flight deck. If you seen Top Gun and you see the guys launching the aircraft on the flight deck, well that is what I do. Please if you would like to get in touch with me please feel free to do so, because I would love to hear from people like you, and once again pass my most appreciative thanks to the rest of the people that make this project so special. You can rest assure that your pen will be my official pen that I will wear while in and out of uni-form. THANK YOU ABHC (AW/SW) Saul O. Mendo Flight Deck Chief USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76 Dear Ms. Ingram, Just wanted to thank you for your lovely gift. I keep it with me on my uniform as I heal at Wounded Warriors. It reminds me there's a whole force of good people who care about us and that's all a Jarhead needs to keep going when things get rough be it in recovery, personal life issues or forward deployed. Sincerely, Justin M. Harding I ordered another 400 pen kits and will have them available at our next meeting. Please be generous to the helmet! Thank you Jim Anderson for your continual support and all who donate to the helmet. Bless you ALL…….Hugs, Ruthe

Sharp . . . by David Wade Did you ever wonder what happens when you cut a piece of wood? What hap-pened that made the two resulting pieces separate where they did? Well, I won-dered, and this article is what I came up with. It seems to make sense, at least to me. I know, I really need to get a life. That notwithstanding, it seems to boil down to one of the basic mechanical properties of wood. Wood is stronger in compression and weaker in tension. When you push a pointy object into wood it first bends the fibers a little. When it bends, some portion of it tries to get longer, and fails. That's it. End of article. You can go back to Desperate Housewives on the tube. But wait, there's more. Now that you have that little piece of in-formation, you can use it to your advantage. Take a look to the right to see what's going on. The wood is going to break some-where in the zone where it is being stretched. You just don't know where in that zone. The best you can do is make that zone as narrow as possible so the breakage doesn't expand into areas of the wood you wanted to keep. How do you do that? YOU SHARPEN YOUR TOOL! THAT'S HOW! [Chill, David, chill!] OK, what does sharpening have to do with this? Sharpening makes the width of the breaking zone smaller. A dull tool in-creases the width which makes for a more ragged cut and more tear-out. It also makes the bending curve more gentle which re-duces the breaking pressure on the fiber. You therefore have to apply much more pressure to stretch the fiber enough to break. This puts more pressure down into the wood and may cause damage in front of the tool. As soon as you include the fibers below the first one, it gets more complicated. The first fiber you are cutting pushes against the next one and so on and so on which gives you a pressure wave expanding forward from the point of the tool. Depending on the nature of the wood and the pressure you are applying, you can stretch and break fibers well in front of the tool. It is im-portant that the first fiber be broken as soon as possible to mini-mize the growth of the break zone. You do that with a sharp tool that focuses the pressure at the smallest possible area. There are a couple of other issues that impact the pressure wave as well. Stay tuned for more ramblings in future issues.
