    WIRELESS

Any type of electrical or electronicoperation accomplished without the

    use of wires.

    Wireless connections use air medium

to connect and send & receive data.Channel is a division in transmission

    medium.

    WIRELESS

COMMUNICATIONCommunication networks are generally implemented with

some type of remote information transmission system thatuseselectromagnetic waves.

Wireless communication may be via: Radio frequency communication

    Microwave communication

    Infrared short range communication

Wireless modem:It is a modulator-demodulator whichenablescommunication at fastest speeds, typically in bits per second.

HISTORY Most credit goes to Guglielmo Marconi, The Father of

Radio, with the initiation of wireless technology

1894: Marconi experimented with Hertzian Waves(radio waves) to produce and detect waves over longdistances

1896: Marconi established the Wireless Telegraph &Signal Company, the first radio factory

    Standards of wireless

802.11b- Actually the first of the 802.11 standards. Max Speed 11MB/sec. 128 bit encryption. 2.4 GHz

    operational frequency.

802.11a- Best suited for large businesses concerned with

security 54 MB/sec max speed. 5 GHz operating frequency. 152 or

    256 bit level of encryption.

802.11g- Best of both worlds for the average user.

    2.4 GHz, 54 MB/sec, 128 bit encryption.

    Modes of wireless communication

    Wireless communication can be via:

    Radio frequency communication.

Microwave communication, for example long-range line-of-sight via highly directional antennas, or short-rangecommunication.

Infrared (IR) short-range communication, for example fromremote controls or via Infrared Data Association (IrDA).

Applications may involve point-to-point communication, point-to-multipoint communication, broadcasting, cellular networks

    and other wireless networks. 9

    What is Wi-Fi ?

Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity and a catchall phrase for the several different standards andrecommendations that comprise wireless networking.

Wi-Fi enables the user to deploy a computer networkwithout needing to run cable throughout the facility.

    Enables faster connections

    Better range Better security

More spatial capacity i.e. bits per second persquare metre

    What is WIMAX..

(IEEE 802.16) is a metropolitan area network

technology whose goal is to one day provide last

mile broadband wireless access to the general

    population.

WIMAX delivering broadband to places where it

    would not

be viable to establish wired connections.

WIMAX has capability to connect to homes and

businesses within a 30 mile radius, WiMAX has

the potential to give millions of people access to

the Internet cheaply and easily. 515
