The Truth About Gutter Protection ProductsHow to watch for Destructive Gutter Protection ProductsNot all products that exist for the purpose of eliminating the need to clean your gutters are work-able. Very few work and most are destructive.

Why destructive? Because, the main reason to clean your gutters is to prevent water damage to your home. When debris builds up in a gutter, water goes where it should not. It overflows and floods landscaping, potentially backing up into your crawlspace or basement. It spills down the walls and damages the siding. It backs up over the back of the gutter and begins to sodden the fascia boards or rafter tails. It wicks up under the shingles to the roof deck and soffits, killing an otherwise good roof. Wherever moisture stays, wood destroying organisms (WDO) inevitably fol-low. These organisms eat away at the wood and the phenomenon is usually called “dry rot.”

Here are the questions to ask yourself, when considering the purchase of a gutter protection system:

A. Is the system professionally installed? Self installed systems that you buy at a store very rarely work, if ever. Only a well engineered technology, properly installed, can protect your house and gutters without damage. Make sure the installers work for the dealer and are not sub-contractors.

B. When you look at the system, does it look like any debris will be moved by the system toward the house? Gutter protection systems should only move the debris in one direction, away from the wood. Be careful of features that are called “double venting” or that appear to move any water toward the house. If any debris is moved toward the shingles, or appears as though it might be made to sit next to the shingles, moisture will be there too. Wicking of moisture up under the shingles will inevitably follow. Even professionally installed systems, cheap or expensive, can have this deadly feature. Watch for it.

C. How long has it been on the market? Look for a product with a proven track record and proven customer satisfaction.

D. Does it have a lifetime warranty? Look for a Gutter Protection System that will pass all of these tests.

Screens or Covers?With any Gutter Protection system, whether we are talking about prod-ucts added to gutters or specially de-signed gutters, we are dealing with only two kinds of technology: some sort of cover or some sort of screen.
