Know HowRate Optimized Design (ROD) ensuresthat a planned PV system is properlysized in accordance with customer’selectricity demand, local electricitytariffs, and location.

Integrated Project Management (IPM)minimizes capital requirements for thePV system, particularly, by cutting thecost of Balance of System (BoS) or socalled “Soft Cost”.

Together these two result in morethan 33% total savings increasecompared to unoptimizedconventional “turn key” installations.

Tariffs MatterCost of solar generated kWh is $0.10-$0.12, which is less than cost of on-peakAPS tariff ($0.22-$0.27)/kWh but morethan off-peak APS tariff $0.07 kWh.

Intraday period of solar generation differsfrom the APS on-peak Time Of Use (TOU),and APS allows to off-set the on-peakpower only by solar kWhs generatedduring the APS on-peak period.

Thus, optimization is to size-position a PVsystem so it would supply enough powerfor on-peak demand while keeping off-peak capacity at minimum (Area A = AreaB, Area C → 0 on the Chart).

Highest ReturnA 9-10 kW dc rated system will providethe highest return on invested capital(ROI in 15 and 25 years, respectively).

A 13-16 kW dc rated system willprovide maximum savings (NPV in 15and 25 years, respectively).

Any additional money spent on thesystem rated over 13-16 kWdc will bewasted.

Practically, a 12 kW dc rated systemwould be the choice to satisfy more orless both NPV and ROI criteria.

Economic Effect

In 25 years, an optimized PV systemwill ensure at least 33% more totalsavings from the system cost andelectricity bill than unoptimized one.

The difference is even greater forshorter terms.

Payout of the optimized system is 9years vs. 16 years for the unoptimizedone, which is a 44% improvement.

System Cost EffectThe cost of electricity generated by asolar PV system is the most significantfactor affecting system’s economicoutput. In turn, solar electricity costis determined by the cost of theinstalled system.

For instance, APS customers wouldneed a rate optimized design for anyPV system, cost of which is more than$1.7 per kWdc.

Systems installed for more than $3.5per kWdc are unlikely to beeconomical for APS customers.
