Domestic violence changed my life, my children’s lives and me as a person. First came the verbal abuse from my husband, and after I had our son it became physical.

It ended at a social services appointment. The person who was helping me asked if I was being abused and I said, “no”…sitting there with my weight at only 90 pounds, both knees bruised and scabbed from my most recent bout with my husband who told me he would, “break every bone in my body and drop me down a six-foot hole to die.”

When I arrived at Save the Family, I had nothing in my name because my husband had taken me off of everything. The banks and everywhere I went for help said I had no history, no credit, and was basically a “ghost.” We found Save the Family through a referral from a domestic violence shelter and were provided a home through their transitional housing program.

I took the opportunity to enroll in everything Save the Family offered, from counseling and their caring case managers, to financial and legal assistance, to provisions of household furnishings and supplies.

My children thrived under Save the Family’s expert guidance and wonderful programs. The organization helped with planned activities for them and paid the fees for things like music lessons, sports and other activities that would keep them away from negative influences. Save the Family held us accountable though, and that is what made me and my children self-sufficient.

I’ve been out of the program for 10 years now and love my life working as a property manager at an apartment complex. My children have also benefitted from Save the Family.

I can’t say enough about what Save the Family did for me and my children. We have our hopes and dreams back.

Two Sides to our HouseWhile Save the Family provides housing and programs for Homeless Families, our affiliate agency, the Affordable Rental Movement, or ARM, provides long-term, affordable rental housing for working poor households. ARM provides more than 120 below market-rate rental units to Working Poor families earning 60% or less of the area median income.

ARM tenant families also have access to the supportive services offered through Save the Family’s Homeless Families Intervention Project – services that can help them to move forward to market-rate rental housing, or even homeownership.
