Dear Friends, In 1965, the movie “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” was released. According to one description, it is a retelling of the Biblical account about Jesus of Nazareth, from the Nativity through the Ascension. When the movie premiered on February 15, 1965, critics were divided. Some who liked the film called it “a big, powerful moving picture” and “a novel, reverent and important film . . .of this crucial event in the history of mankind.” Other critics weren’t as thrilled: “The pace was so stupefying that I felt not uplifted — but sandbagged!” “God is unlucky . . . His only begotten son turns out to be a bore.” I am not much of a fan of movies based on the Bible. When someone asks me if I have seen such-and-such a Bible movie, I say, “No, but I read the book!” But the gospel of Jesus Christ is “the greatest story ever told.” Sometimes we forget the important fact that these accounts of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are stories, crafted by master story writers and tellers, complete with plot development, characters, and themes.

WORSHIP LEADERSHIP IN JANUARY

ACTIONS OF THE SESSION

At the December 18, 2018 meeting of the session, the elders and minister: * were led in an opening devotion and prayer by Elder Clay Blue; * conducted the meeting as a worship service; * read from God’s Word in Luke 2:1-20 and watched a video “One Voice” from the U.S. Air Force Band and Chorus; * approved the minutes from the November 20, 2018 stated session meeting and the December 2, 2018 meetings of the congregation and corporation; * approved a request from the The Working Class Sunday School Class to use a new curriculum called “The Wired Word”; * discussed issues related to the church nursery and instructed the Christian Education, Building & Grounds, and Worship & Music Ministry Teams to bring recommendations to the January session meeting; * called a congregational meeting for Sunday, January 6, 2019 to hear a report from the Nominating Committee and elect elders to the session’s Class of 2021; * endorsed Effie Mobley’s idea to honor with a dinner the members of the Wallace Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department on an evening in February; * elected Elder Ann Carter to represent our congregation at the Saturday, January 26, 2019 meeting of the East Community of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina at the Beulaville Presbyterian Church; * prayed for members of the congregation and community; * joined in a unison closing prayer.

Of the four gospels, I think Mark is the greatest story ever told (although I also enjoy reading Matthew, Luke, and John). I had the great privilege to spend three months last summer translating the gospel of Mark, and reading and thinking about this most fascinating story. The Alternative Sunday School Class will begin a new study of the gospel of Mark on Sunday, January 6. We meet at 10:00 a.m. in Room 304, across from the Music Room. I’m looking forward to sharing some insights from my sabbatical study about the story in the gospel of Mark. Typically we hear the gospel in little snippets on Sunday morning — just a handful of verses before a sermon. You’d be surprised what you can learn when you look at the gospel as a whole! I invite you to join us for this new study of the Gospel of Mark on January 6 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 304. I look forward to learning from you more about this story about Jesus Christ, the greatest story ever told. In Christ,

Greetings from the Youth!

The past several weeks has been wonderful for our youth program! We enjoyed a trip to Battle House laser tag in Wilmington and had fellowship together with a progressive Christmas dinner! The youth room received some upgrades including new paint, and a pool table! The youth would like to say THANK YOU to Tim & RJ Peppe for their generous donation!

We will be breaking for Christmas for the rest of December and will resume regular youth group meetings at church in January from 4-6pm. Our next off-campus event will be bowling at Ten-Pin Ally in Wilmington on January 27.

If you would like to become an ambassador in our youth program, please contact Zach Casteen ([email protected]).

As always, have a blessed day! Zach Casteen Youth Ministry Leader
