Uganda’s prospects of hosting the 3rd World University Netball Championship from September 17-21 took a positive turn after Imperial Group of Hotels came on board to support the plan. On April 24, James Kasavubu, the Imperial Group of Hotels head of sales and marketing, announced a partnership with hosts Makerere University and the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) to support the upcoming championship. “One of the essential needs for an athlete during games is refreshment. That’s why we have come on board to support the organisers with 400 cartons of water,” Kasavubu said at a press briefing at Imperial Royale Hotel. But that was not all as Kasavubu announced that they are to accommodate all participating teams at a discounted rate in the four-star hotel located in the heart of Kampala city. MAKERERE ASDASDS

At the end of the day it’s the athletes who are in the limelight but behind the scenes are those people who make things move. They draw budget proposals, follow them up to ensure the necessary resource is in place for the team to not only prepare, but also successfully compete. In the case of the World University Netball Championship, there are

people spending sleepless nights to ensure that the event on September 17-21 is a success. Top on this list is of course Makerere University Vice Chancellor Barnabas

Nawangwe and the dean of Students Cyriaco Kabagambe. But doing most of the spadework is an extended team that includes Peninnah Kabenge, PRo Rita Namisango and the Event’s Marketing Manager Jocelyn Ucanda.

Kampala draw its name from the local animal, the Impala, that dominated the bushes of the city in 1877.

Kampala is a cosmopolitan city originally built on seven hills, is Uganda’s Capital and business hub in great lakes region of east and Central Africa. Founded in the early 19th century, the city has experienced unprecedented growth over the years, not only in terms of spatial coverage and population, but also in economic globalisation.

Kampala is the gateway to Uganda’s cultural and natural diversity- the city is right in the centre of Buganda, the largest kingdom in Uganda and with significant historical, social and cultural features that are 500 years old and of great interest to any visitor.

Uganda has 56 tribes. Each of these tribes has its own culture, and staple food. In central Uganda, a failure to taste matooke would make one’s adventure incomplete. To prepare matooke, the fruit is peeled, and wrapped in banana

leaves and and placed in a saucepan with water and lined at the bottom with the midrib, or main stem, of the bunch cut into pieces. This keeps the banana from getting soggy. After about 45 minutes of steaming the matooke is mashed in the banana leaf before being returned to the heat for another 30 to 40 minutes. It is then ready to serve with any sauce.

While in Kampala;l Use companies that hire local tour guides and use local services for a truly authentic experience.l Ask permission before photographing or filming local residents. Ugandans more than love to take that picture with you.l Buy crafts made by local artisans and your money will go directly to the communities.l Avoid buying products made from threatened animal species or natural resources.

A number of historical sites in and around Kampala relate to a time of dramatic change in the late 19th century when the Baganda encountered Islamic traders and British colonialists and missionaries. Several of these sites stand on the city’s original

seven hills. They include the Protestant cathedral at Namirembe, the Catholic Cathedral at Rubaga, Fort Lugard in Old Kampala and the Kabaka’s Palace at Lubiri. Further afield are the Kasubi and Wamala tombs, Katereke Prison ditch, Naggalabi Coronation Site and the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine. These locations were pivotal during yester years in

Uganda.Contemporary culture comes to life at Kampala’s Ndere

Centre, which has a colourful programme of music and dance displays.
