Deputy Mayor’s Welcome
The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr. HazelLynsky apologises for not being able to attend but ispleased that the Deputy Mayor, Cllr, Roberta Swierswill fulfil her duties on this occasion.
As Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, I am honoured to be hosting the Armed Forces Day on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council.
As many of you will know, being loyal supporters andcontributors of this annual event in Scarborough, thiswill be the 11th year that it has taken place. It is anevent that started small on West Pier and quicklydeveloped to encompass the entire South Bayincluding the beach. We have since 2014 - when theRed Arrows first displayed - been running an event that has equalled any city that hashosted the National Armed Forces Day. With all that experience and knowledge it’s nowonder that the Events Team wrote an “exceptional bid” that won Scarborough theopportunity to host the National event in 2020.
Sadly today, we are saying goodbye to the Armed Forces Day Manager, Rowena Marsdenwho has been the backbone and mainstay of the event since its inception in 2009. Onbehalf of the AFD steering group and all the AFD supporters, exhibiters and veteransthat have got to know Rowena over the years, I would like to extend our thanks andwish her well for the future.
This year we are privileged to mark the Centenary of the Scarborough Sea Cadets, T.S. Scarborough. They have invited a contingent from Northampton to join them heretoday to celebrate their achievements, so give them a cheer when they all proudlyparade at 12 noon in the opening ceremony.
We also welcome a new large exhibit on West Pier - the Barnsley Airborne ComradesAssociation, who have a fantastic array of weapons and stories of “daring-do” to sharewith you all and be aware that they will be firing a mortar gun on the half hourthroughout the day!
I hope you will enjoy this special day and say “Thank you” to our Armed Servicespersonnel - past, present and future.
Cllr Roberta Swiers Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough 2019/20

Welcome
A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.
Hymn O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home;
Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

SCARBOROUGH SEA CADETS CELEBRATE
T.S. Scarborough Centenary 1919-2019
In 1919 an application was made to the Admiral Commanding CoastGuards and Reserves for the East Mount Sea Training School (later knownas the Graham Sea Training School) to be recognised as a Naval Unit. Thestatus was granted on completion of their first Royal Naval Inspection andin early 1920 the unit was re-named Sea Cadets and proudly issued withnaval uniforms.
Many cadets and staff have passed through the doors over the years withthe steadfast aim of working together as a team representing Scarboroughat the highest standards expected. They have travelled offshore, abroad,on Royal Navy ships, met Royalty, made friends for life and taken skillsthey learnt with them into adulthood.
Throughout the units’ history, the common goal of giving the youth of thetown the best opportunities through nautical adventure and fun has beenthe driving force that has been recognised both at local and national level.
The town of Scarborough has always supported the Sea Cadets as muchas possible and we appreciate it immensely. Without the support of thecouncil and the public over the last 100 years the unit would not strive theway it does today. This constant support has enabled T.S. Scarborough toattain the pinnacle of success by winning the Canada Trophy in 2018 andbeing named the best Sea Cadet Unit in the UK.
We would like to thank everyone who has ever contributed toScarborough Sea Cadets in any way large or small over the last Century.
Your support has made a difference in so many people’s lives and we look forward to another 100 years doing what we do and we hope you are as proud as we are to be part of the Scarborough Sea Cadet Family.
