“Save Snakes - Be A Sarpamitra!”Contributions Of Snakes
Most people would not think of snakes as a working animal. Obviously, a snake is not as demanding as say a
sniffer dog, nor as physical. Snakes can save peoples life’s which have unfortunately been bitten by a disturbed
snake. Anti-venom has saved millions of lives worldwide, especially in remote areas. Most snakes that allow us with
anti-venom have been captive bred and are constantly giving it to hospitals worldwide (if necessary). They are
usually kept in warehouses, with hundreds of other species.
In farming conditions, farmers often collect snakes and release them near their farm yard, to exterminate mice
which will in turn feed on the products that the farm produces, for example cereals. It is a natural and cheap
method of doing so. Farmers and snakes surprisingly have a good relationship because of their need for food. The
corn snake in America got its name from where the snake is situated.
Misconceptions about Snakes It is totally erroneous to believe that snake bites can be
cured by mantras, mantriks, magic spells roots and herbs. Do you know that in our country about 25,000
people die playing fools to such beliefs? Anti-Venom is the only cure for the snake bite! The other remedies are useful to relieve fear and treat shock, but should
never be substituted for or interfere with the anti-venom treatment.
Snakes are revengeful. There is no scientific basis to this. A snake's brain is not developed to the extent of
retaining memory. It is said that if you kill a snake, another (its mate) will follow you and take revenge.
Snakes guard wealth. This is a common misbelief. Old crumbling houses, 'wadas' are ideal for snakes as they
find plenty of hiding places together with rats and mice. Old snakes have hair on them. Hair does not grow on
snakes. Periodically snakes cast of moult and if some moult remains, it appears like hair. Sometimes some
snake charmers even stick hair onto the snake's head. Snakes hypnotize. This is believed to be so because snakes stare fixedly as they do not have eyelids and
cannot blink.
Facts about Snakes Snake’s scales are made up of something called
Keratin, which is the same thing that our fingernails are made from.
Mother Pythons will coil themselves around their eggs and make their bodies shiver in order to heat herself up
and keep her eggs warm until they hatch. The biggest snake is the Reticulated Python. It can
grow up to 10.05 meters or 33 feet long! The thickest snake is the Anaconda. The biggest one found measured 111 centimeters or 44 inches around.
That's huge! The Thread snake is the smallest snake. It is only
about 10 centimeters (4 inches long) and the size of a toothpick.
Vine snakes are remarkable because they appear to have binocular vision.
Many Zookeepers believe that Cobras are faster learners than other snakes. They are able to tell the
difference between their trainer and strangers.
