Saskatchewan produced 4,310.669 pounds of creamery butter in 1916. as against 3.811,-014 pounds in 1915.

A good' beginning has been made in the production of cheese in \Vestem Canada, 880.728 pounds haviug been produced by Manitoba factories last year, an increase of 154.003 pounds over 1915. Alberta is rapidly coming to the front as a cheese producer. its crcameries and cheese factories having increaseu thefr output of this product from 381,632 pounds in 1915 to 745.122 pounds in 1916, an increase of almost one hundred per cent. in one year.

The total value of the dairy products of the three prairie provir.ces in 1916 amounted to 6,308.921, as compared with $4.947.500 in 1915. the rclative value of the output of butter and cheese of the three provinces being as follows: Alberta. butter $2.-619,248; <;heese $154,453; Manitoba. butter $2.038,109; cheese $158.931; Saskatchewan, butter $1.338,180. _ The dairying industy in Western Canada is still in its infancy and as the country affords great opportunities for its development, considerable expansion in the output and value of buller and cheese may be looked forward to.

W h7 Farming is Essential Despite Its Poor Profits This In

dustry Affects National Life 'ivV. C . .Good, B.A., of Paris, Ont.,

addressed the Empire club of Toronto as a practical farmer and also a student of the economic problems underlying agriculture in Canada. He pointed out that agricultnre is not merely an occupation which some individuals follow for profit, but it i. n great national interest, determining in a dominant way the fortunes of this nation and the opportunities and character of our poulpation; hence the improving of agriculture aITects Ihe status of Canada, its outlook am] destiny. He made a comparison between agriculture and manufacturing as to profits, showing that if five per cent. were allowed on the capiial investment of the farmers there ""ould be a deficit in the year's operations of $110,000,000, the value of 1,000 millions. The manufacturers had a surplus of $260,000,000 on their year's business in addition to the five per cent. on capital-invested. Thus Is revealed one of the chief reasons why boys leave the farm.

Yet agriculture is the most importBnt industry which contributes to man's welfare, besides being the~ one \\'hich supplies leaders in all other lines of life; city life in a few years would become extinct without the constant stream from the country. The seed bed of the whole population is the rural Iifc-includin{l' farmIng, lumbering and mining-because these occupations have a monoply of fresh air and sunshine, and the farm

'lIffords the very best opportunity for Illt abundant supply of good food. In the life of the growing generation these three things are of supreme importance.

Total Value of Horses III Province Placed at Forty Million

Dollars \

Both the soil and climatic conditions of Manitoba are admirably suited for horse raising. An abundance of pasture and feed of every description suitable for horses can be grown and the cost of production is much lower than in the older settled districts. The winters, although soinewhat 'cold, are dry, and are not so keenly felt as in more humid areas. Thousands of horses arc wintered annually out of doors, and they come through the winter in surprisin~ly good condition. Rarely is the fall of sno\v so heavy as to prevent horses from finding sufficient feed for themselves out of doors.

The demand for draft horses has been seldom so keen as it is at the present time. Geldings of fair size and quality were changing hands this spring at prices from $225 to $300 each, and mares of a similar type and quality were bringing a sli~htly higher price.

It is estima.ted that Manitoba has 250.000 head of horses, of which, approximately, 1,200 arc stallions enrolled in the department of agriculture. A consel'vath'e estimate would place tht) total value of the horses of the province at $40,000,000.

-The Power of the Kaiser Must Be

Broken It is a curious circumstance· that

heretofore the leaders of all mutinies, except that in Russia, have been ~nxious to deal gently with their officers. Not so in Germany, for in the revolt of the four battleships against its grinding, brutal and harsh naval discipline one captain was thrown civerboard and the fate of the other officers remains so far undisclosed. Is it any wonder, then, that such a revol t should be organized when, as illustrative of Germans' theories, the kaiser, without any legal inquiry, without even 0 drumhead court martial, could of his own will decree that one out of seven mutineers should be hanged and others be senenced to years of imprisonment? Such is the autocracy the world is fighting, and one of the most pregnant illustrations that its doom is scaled is that afforded by the attempt unsuccessful as it has been, to secure peace by the mutiny aBoat.New York Herald.

The War in the Kitchen Decision of the War a Question of . Food Supplies

In every attempt to save food materials-and such an attempt should be made in the preparation of every meal, whether by the housewife at home or the chef in the hotel or restaurant-certain facts shOUld be kept in mind: "Our problem is to feed our allies this winter by sending .them_as much food as we can of the most concentrated nutritive value in the least shipping space. These foods are wheat, beef, pork, dairy products and· sugar. Our 50l\ltion is to eat I~ss of these and more of other foods of which we have an abundance and to waste less of all foods." BLOOD -MAKING MEDICINE It took cenhiries for medical

science to discover that the blood is the life. Now, it is known that if the blood were lllways abundant. rich and pure, vcry few people'would ever be ill. It was not until the rnd of the 19th century that an instrument was invented for measuring the red part of the blood. Then doctors could tell just how anaemic a patient had become, and with medicine to make new blood the patient soon got well.

All the blood in the body is nourished and kept rich ami red by the food taken daily, but when, for any reason, a person is run down and cannot make sufficient blood from the food to keep the body in health then a blood-making medicine is re· quired. The simplest and very best of blood-makers suitable for homt) usc by anyone, is Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. -Sheep RaiBini Scarcity of Sheep in

Should Be Remedied Canada

In Manitoba sheep raising has hecome a craze. The minister of agriculture of that province is conferring with tlte Ontario minister of agl ieulture to sec if he can get a supply of sheep for breeding purposes. At first it was thought there would be plenty to spare in Ontario; but it turns out that Ontario has hardly more than she needs for herself. In the United States the decline in the industry has been even greater than In Canada. Now that Canadian farmers arc in the mood to go Into the industry more largely we should think the best source of supply would be Australia. True, there is a great lack of tonnage for Austr;llian wheat. l3ut in view of the rapidity with which sheep multiply exceptional means might be taken to bring them from the country in which there is a supabundance to one in which they are at a premium.-Hamilton Spectator.

After the War Land Settlement and A&riculture

Will Be Stimulated In the post-bellum period Canada

will need as much real production as It can manage. Farming ought to have a big stimulus. Thcre arc only two ways of bringing up our oulput -10 brlllg in traincd farmcrs, or to educale grcen settlcrs. The releasc of our own large armies and immigration 'of British cx-soldi~rs will give us the raw material which ought to bc lI}rned 10 agricultural account. To provide training facilities on inviting conditions and terms is to attract thousands of men who otherwise would drift about, scttling in the citics and towns when and how thcy could. The grcat obstacle to land settlcmcnt is ignorancc of farm conditions-for farming is a tcchnical tradc, not a refuge for the failurcs of othcr occupations. l3y all means the opcning of the door to scttlcl;lcnl t!lrough training and ~cltling 'faci1i~ ties, ought to be as Wide as possible f,!r returning and immig-rating soldlcrs.

She had strategicnlly placed on the frontiers t\\,entyonc fiying grounds ilIuminatcd by powcrful lighting systems-in one case a 2i ,000,000 candle power revolving electric flash-for use in night flying, while a year later British pilots attacking Zcppelins had to be contcnt with petrol flares in b\Lckets for lighting the landing places. A month before the war German and Austrian oOiccrs visited tl,e concenItation camp at Netheravon,' and carefully noted the British strength in ail"cmft. From this picture tl'e writer turns to the progress in British aeroplane contsruction during the war-we "built hundreds in the first year of the war, thol\sands in the second, many thousands in the third, and had in ,iew plans for the production of tens of thousands in the fourth."

"Purpose and Qther combination of effort have achicve<\ wonders with seeming"')' small material other thnn that whi c h nature has provided. The bank de 1 )sits of Canada arc about the same as those of the one city of Chicago, thnt is, $1,500,000,000 and yet within a gcneration a huge wild aggrt!<:"ation of mountain plaia and liver has been set up among the nations' with its 3.700 miles from Atlantic to Pacific. A government which conceives its duty to be the promotion of the people's interests, a railroacl company which "spans th" world" wilh rail and steamship, a population with the vigor and ambition of pioneers, a trallition that I"lIl1S its trail back to the davs of Charlcs the Second, over the liistory of the IIudson's Bay company-these are some of the potencics that have given a colony the pride of an cmpire.

So many stories of hcroism and courage arc flashed over thc cables as week stlccceds week in the Great \Var, that thc record of the utmost daring that in the early days of the war \\'ollld have received l1Iany columns of merited publicity are tou .. y dismi5secl with lillIe more than a passing reference. Yet now and ugain some decd of brilliant daring rivets the atteution of the jaded war reader. Such an accoun: is contained in a letter recently recel';etl from the front which tells of the fearless leadCI ship and bravcry of a British officer. British Prime Minister Says That. of the retnrned men, and classes in all trades arc now under way, from world-old carpentry to movie operating.

Travcl has educated men who without the war would have run the whole span of their lives with the closely circumscribed vision of a small town. - Experience has made them ambitious.

They Cannot See the Point Strange Grievance of Germany

Against the United States Germans arc not saying as much

nowadays as formcrly about our sales of ammunition to the allies, but thcy still cling to the curious notion that by those sales we were guilty of prolonging the war and increasing its, slaugh ter.

"There had becn somc' muddle about our orders," writes this soldier, "or, at least the tactical situation had not developed according to • expcctations. A subaltcrn was acting captain in command of our, company, but owing to the difiicullies Right Hon. David Lloyd 'Gcorge,

speaking at a meeting held in London recently, for the purpose of launching a campaifl"n for greatcr national economy, slUd in part:

The British tonnagc lost monthly now is not much more than oncthird of the total destroyed last April.

Mr. Lloyd George said 'that "Boloism" in all itJl sh;lpes and fOI'ms Ihonld be looked out for.

"Beware of people who try to sow dissension, distrust and suspicion," he said. "The / cnemy is trying lo rattle our nerves. Keep steady and W~ will win." _

The way to shorten the war, .aid ,-Mr. Lloyd George. was to prepare

British shipbuilding, said the premier, has increased fourfold, nnd America had dOllc likewise.
