they have never been made inNature. They are now sitting ina freezer," virology professorSimon Wain-Hobson ofFrance's Pasteur Institute toldAFP.

He pointed to a laboratoryleak of foot and mouth, a cattledisease, which caused an out-break in Britain six years ago.

It was unclear how the fluhybrid, which is not deadly inguinea pigs, would affect peo-ple -- but Wain-Hobsonwarned: "These could be pan-demic viruses.

Wain-Hobson and others fearthe risk may far outweight thescientific value of the research.

The findings held little valuefor finding a vaccine or treat-ment that would take years todevelop -- probably long afteran outbreak, they argue.

"The record of containmentin the highest containment lab-oratories is not good. Therehave been repeated leaks," saidRobert May, a former presidentof Britain's Royal Society ofscience.

Virologist John Oxford fromthe Queen Mary University ofLondon, however, said the ex-periment was a valuablewakeup call.

It showed that the twoviruses, both still infecting peo-ple around the world, can swapgenes.

In January, scientists in theUnited States and the Nether-lands resumed controversial re-search into their own hybrid fluviruses after taking a year-longbreak to allay fears of the bugescaping the lab or falling intoterrorist hands.

Their creation was able tojump between ferrets, consid-ered a good research model forhuman disease spread.

The US-Dutch teams cited a"public health responsibility" toresume the work, halted after apublic outcry and global safetyprobes.

PARIS (AFP) - Immunologistsexpressed concern Friday aboutthe "dangerous" work of scien-tists in China who created a hy-brid bird flu virus that canspread in the air betweenguinea pigs, and now lives in alab freezer.

The team from the ChineseAcademy of Agricultural Sci-ences and Gansu AgriculturalUniversity wrote in the journalScience they had created a newvirus by mixing genes fromH5N1 "bird flu" and H1N1"swine flu".

H5N1, transmitted to peopleby birds, is fatal in about 60percent of cases, but does nottransmit between humans -- acharacteristic that has pre-vented a pandemic so far.

Some argue that hybrid stud-ies like these shed light on howthe virus could mutate in natureto cause a human epidemic, andmay help us prepare.

Since 2003, H5N1 has in-fected 628 people, killing 374,according to the World HealthOrganisation.

H1N1, which erupted inMexico, is highly transmissibleand infected a fifth of theworld's population in a 2009-10pandemic, but is about as lethalas ordinary flu.

The new mutant virus waseasily transmitted betweenguinea pigs through respiratorydroplets -- which the Chineseteam said proved the deadlyH5N1 virus may need but a sim-ple genetic mutation to "acquiremammalian transmissibility".

Flu hybrids can arise in na-ture when two virus strains in-fect the same cell and exchangegenes in a process known as re-assortment, but there is no evi-dence that H1N1 and H5N1have done so yet.

Some observers fear that sci-ence is putting mankind at riskby preemptively creating suchmutants.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Asolid job creation report forApril and a fall in the joblessrate to 7.5 percent sweetenedthe picture for the US econ-omy Friday, amid worries thatit has tumbled into a "springslump."

The Labor Department saidthe economy added a firm165,000 jobs last month.

But it also revised sharplyupward the job growth num-bers for February and March, adding 114,000 net new posi-tions to the previously reporteddata, all in the private sector, even as taxes rose and govern-ment spending tightened.

Together that pressed theunemployment rate down 0.1percentage point to 7.5 per-cent, underscoring steady ifnot spectacular gains in the jobmarket in the past year. InApril 2012, the jobless ratewas 8.1 percent.

The better-than-expecteddata sparked a surge in USstocks, with the key indicesjumping one percent on thenews, while the dollar, after abrief spike higher, headedlower again.

Around 1503 GMT, theS&P 500 was up 1.3 percent at1,617, while the Dow JonesIndustrial Average smashedthrough the 15,000 barrier forthe first time, gaining 1.2 per-cent to 15,006.

The dollar was at $1.3134 toone euro, down from $1.3063late Thursday.

Alan Krueger, chairman ofthe White House's Council ofEconomic Advisers, said thedata showed the economy'scontinuing pull away from the2008-2009 Great Recession.

But he warned that the pushfor more federal spending re-duction by Republicans inCongress could hurt growth.

The Labor Department re-port sharply revised the overallpicture of employment and theeconomy more broadly fromjust one month ago, when ana-

lysts were shocked by the ini-tial estimate of net jobs gener-ated in March, a paltry 88,000.

Coupled with other data, theMarch report had suggested aspring stall in the economy, believed explainable by higherpayroll and other taxes thattook effect in January, and thesharp "sequester" federalspending cuts initiated onMarch 1.

The big surprise in the re-port was the revision of theMarch jobs growth number to138,000, as well as February's,which gained 64,000 to332,000.

April's gains were all in theprivate sector, as governmentcontinued to shed jobs amidtough budget cuts.

Job creation was strongestin the professional and busi-ness services sector, tourismand entertainment, retail tradeand health care, while indus-trial sector jobs shrank.

Still, there were clear signsof ongoing weakness in thedata.

The number of peoplecounted as officially unem-ployed was little changed at11.7 million.

In addition, the fall in jobsin the industrial sector, withmanufacturing jobs flat, showed that efforts to rebuildUS industry into a larger motorof the economy were sagging.

GENEVA (AFP) - China mustfall into line by July 31 with aWorld Trade Organisationorder to change its restrictivepolicy on certain steel importsfrom the United States, an ar-bitrator said Friday.

A WTO dispute settlementhearing decided that Beijinghad failed to prove why itneeded more time to adapt itsrules in order to respect a deci-sion handed down by globalcommerce's rule-setting bodyin November.

In a ruling issued by theWTO, arbitrator Claus-DieterEhlermann said that he had de-

cided that eight months was areasonable period of time totake corrective action.

The dispute dates back toSeptember 2010, when Wash-ington accused China ofbreaching trade rules by notproviding sufficient evidencethat anti-dumping duties wereneeded on US imports of elec-trical steel used in the powersector.
