WHARE-TAU, EXETER | SUTTON TOPS, SUTTON FOREST AND TWO GARDENS IN BUNDANOON: EASTDENE AND ARDEN

Established in 1988 on three hectares, this country garden was created after the owners purchased 115 acres of undeveloped land. Set in an old Australian eucalyptus woodland, it is 750 metres above sea level, overlooks Mittagong and commands beautiful views of the Nattai Valley and the Blue Mountains.

The garden incorporates an English-style design with Australian native shrubs and trees. The rich basalt soils and protection from harsh winds have stimulated remarkable growth. Through the gate and along the granite path, past a very old Eucalyptus elata (River peppermint), is the formal garden where you will find a lake surrounded by Iris pseudacormus. To the right is the native/exotic garden planted up the hill with many species, dominated by May bushes, Guelder roses, Escallonia, Leucodendron, Japonica, Spiraea, Grevillia, Acacia and Hebe. To the left, a creek built in 1994, joins two ponds and now forms a ‘natural’ watercourse.

An extensive herbaceous/perennial garden has been established within the four walls of an old cottage ‘ruin’ where there are clematis and rambling roses. Through the gazebo, planted with Wisteria

longissima, there is the bulb garden surrounded by a Laurel and Camellia sasanqua hedge. The perennial garden in front of the house, the lawns, streams and ponds, statues, fountains, vistas and a large variety of shrubs and trees—all result in a beautiful all-season garden.

Directions From SydneyLeave highway at Mittagong exit and turn left at the Best Western Grand Country Lodge Motel into Fitzroy Street, just before shops. Turn left over the railway bridge onto Range Road; past Frensham School and continue to the roundabout at Old South Road. Turn right into Old South Road and the entrance to ‘Greenbrier Park’ is approximately 1.1km on left.

From BowralTake Bowral Street or Merrigang Street; turn left onto Old South Road. The entrance to Greenbrier Park’ is approximately 1.5km on right.

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AUTUMN GARDENS | 3

Nearly twenty years ago Maureen Purtell and Tony Davis moved to Bowral aiming to develop a show garden suitable for opening to the public. Both are plant-lovers, so the garden has evolved into a very special mix of common and rare plants. They have created the sort of garden that everyone loves and secretly envies. The site has a gentle slope, and from the stone deck at the back of the house the beautifully trimmed lawn leads down to a pool where ducks gather. It is a garden that delights and inspires all gardeners with so many fine specimens of Maple, Camellia, Daphne and Dogwood.

The borders are beautiful in springtime, too, as they are filled with bulbs. Tony Davis is well known as the Southern Highlands ‘Daffodil Man’: he has been breeding daffodils for the past thirty years, one of

only twenty breeders in Australia. He and Maureen are foundation supporters of the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens and it is especially appropriate that their garden is open this weekend.

Directions: From BowralTake the Moss Vale Road out of Bowral and turn left into Burradoo Road. ‘The Garden House’ is 0.5km on the left.

From SHBG site and plant sale At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Kangaloon Road/B73. Turn left into Burradoo Road and No. 62 is on the right. (Approx. 1.4km from the SHBG site)

‘Sutton Tops’, as its name suggests, is high on a hill with wonderful expansive views across the rolling green pastures of Sutton Forest. The house sits on ten hectares and the views to the west are towards Berrima and Crookwell; to the north is Mt Gidgebullen; and Moss Vale is to the north-east. This is a developing garden with beautiful roses and collections of Lilium, Mollis Azalea and many perennial treasures, carefully sheltered from the prevailing winter westerly winds by strategically planted hedging. An open and expansive garden, it is a delight to stroll round.

Directions: From Bowral:Take the Moss Vale Road/the Highlands Way. At the first roundabout in Moss Vale take the second exit onto the main street—Argyle Street/Illawarra Highway/A48. Continue to follow Illawarra Highway. At Sutton Forest village (near the hotel), turn left off the Illawarra Highway into Exeter Road (signs for Bundanoon). Greenhills Road is the third street on the right—about 1.8km from the highway. ‘Sutton Tops’ is the first gate on the right.

From CanberraTake the Hume Highway/M31 for 196 km. Take the Illawarra Highway/A48 exit. At Sutton Forest village (near the hotel), turn right off the Illawarra Highway into Exeter Road (signs for Bundanoon). Greenhills Road is the third street on the right—about 1.5 from the highway. ‘Sutton Tops’ is the first gate on the right.

‘Whare-tau’2 EXETER ROAD, EXETER | OWNERS: DAVID AND BERNADETTE SMITH

Situated on an elevated position on the outskirts of Exeter, the 9.5 acre garden surrounding the 1903 Federation brick home contains a diverse array of mature exotic specimen trees, many of which date from the time of the construction of the house. ‘Whare–tau’ (Maori for ‘our home’) is a grand country home that is both historically and architecturally significant. The wide curving driveway is lined with a collection of Oaks and Plane trees interspersed with graceful Cedars and Cypress.

When the Smiths bought the property in 1995 they began a major renovation of the house and garden, which were both in quite a poor state. The house was almost engulfed by vegetation and ivy was growing on the inside.

Following the restoration of the house, the renovation of the garden was tackled next—at that time the new rose garden to the north of the house was established along with the vast double Silver Birch avenue and the fountain garden.

Of particular historical interest is the elevated corn-drying shed, which has become a curiosity in the garden and is believed to date from the time of the Badgerys, the original landholders in

Exeter. Also of interest are the original stables and the original gardener’s cottage, which required complete restoration.

Other trees of interest in the garden are the large Fir (Abies sp), Atlantic Cedar (Cedrus atlantica Glauca), Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus deodara) and many Oaks (Quercus sp) and Elms (Ulmus sp).

DirectionsFrom Bowral: Take the Moss Vale Road/the Highlands Way. ‘Whare-tau’ is situated on the right at the corner of Yarwood Drive (approx. 4.9km south from Sutton Forest).

‘Arden’5 AMOS LANE, BUNDANOON | OWNERS: DAVID AND SUZY DOWSETT

The entrance to ‘Arden’ is near the top of a winding country lane. The two-acre garden, formerly part of a larger estate, has had only two previous owners and there have been two major planting sprees, in the 1930s and 1970s. Trees and bulbs abound. There are some truly magnificent specimens, including a beautiful variegated tulip tree, and maples, magnolias, ash, dogwoods, nyssas, liquidambars, Himalayan cedars, not to mention the 40 metre high Radiata pines that protect the garden from the west and provide a benign micro-climate enabling a wide variety of plants on the rich volcanic soil. Chooks, ducks and vegies have been introduced, and you will find a glamorous chook pen. Cats, chemicals and whipper-snippers are banned. The owners are experimenting with native plants in a wild area at the front gate. Providing small birds with protection from predators is always a consideration. Uninteresting shrubs are gradually being replaced with botanical beauties.

DirectionsFrom BowralTake the Moss Vale Road/the Highlands Way. At the first roundabout in Moss Vale take the second exit onto the main street—Argyle Street/Illawarra Highway/A48. Continue to follow Illawarra Highway. At Sutton Forest village (near the hotel), turn left off the Illawarra Highway into Exeter Road. Follow signs for Bundanoon via Railway Avenue. Turn left onto William Street (Glow Worm Cave turnoff, approx. 0.4km from Bundanoon Railway station), then park (Hawthorne Street). It’s a steep but short walk (approx. 200metres) to ‘Arden’ in Amos Lane.

‘Eastdene’38-40 CHURCH STREET, BUNDANOON | OWNERS: AL AND BARBARA MCKAY

The stately Edwardian ‘Eastdene’ (circa 1894), surrounded by a beautiful garden, is considered by many to be the very epitome of a traditional Southern Highlands country property. An avenue of huge Monterey cypress leads to the house—the long gravelled drive bordered by laurel and camellia hedging and under-planted with agapanthus.

The 55 hectares of garden, lake and rolling pastures include vistas of extensive eucalypt forest in Morton National Park. Close to the house is a lovely four-part formal parterre with ponds, fountains and pebble-mulched beds surrounded by box hedges. The plantings illustrate the changing seasons, with autumn one of the loveliest times of the year—so many shades of gold, red and yellow created by the Japanese maples and a vast array of deciduous trees from oaks, rowans, limes, apples and pears. The

lake is a particular delight with a summerhouse and Monet-style bridge.

Directions From BowralTake the Moss Vale Road/the Highlands Way. At the first roundabout in Moss Vale take the second exit onto the main street—Argyle Street/Illawarra Highway/A48. Continue to follow Illawarra Highway. At Sutton Forest village (near the hotel), turn left off the Illawarra Highway into Exeter Road. Follow signs for Bundanoon via Railway Avenue to Church Street. Continue straight onto Church Street (which becomes Gullies Road). The entrance to ‘Eastdene’ is on the left but please drive past and turn immediately at the next left into Riverview Road and follow the parking signs.

SHBG Nursery on the SiteCorner of Old South and Kangaloon RoadsFor the first time, the plant sale will be held on the SHBG site, where marquees will be filled with a selection of plants grown by the SHBG Friends Plant Growers Group. Many of the plants are rare, unusual, or hard to find, and have been selected because they perform well in the Southern Highlands climate. Being already acclimatised, they will thrive the instant they are planted. The plants for sale this year will include everything from trees and shrubs to the tiniest groundcovers. It will be hard to ignore the array of salvias (at least thirty different species) and cultivars or the many beautiful fuchsias in full flower.
