THE SATARUDRIYA
Notes:
Hail to Rudra, hail to yourwrath and arrow, destroyerof
evil,Hail to your bow and toyour powerful arms.
Prostration to Thee, Rudra;Prostration to Thy Wrathand Thy Arrow
(whichdestroy evil); Prostration beto Thy bow; Prostration to
Thy mighty Arms.
Note: - According to thecelebrated SayanaAcharya, the
Rudrachapter of the Yajurvedaconsists of the Mantras bywhich
oblations are offeredin the Sacrifice of Knowledge, wherein
themanifold universe is
visualised as the extensivemanifestation of theSupreme
being.
With your arrow of peace,bow inspiring hope andquiver of good
fortune, Ovaliant one, make ushappy.
This, Thy arrow that hasbecome exceedinglypeaceful (to the
devout);
Thy bow become a sourceof auspiciousness, and Thyquiver of
blessedness; withthese, O Valiant One(Rudra), make us happy.
Note:- While the firstMantra invokes the TerriblePower for
destruction of evil, the second envisagesthe fulfillment of the
armson the establishment of peace, and the nowbenignant phase of
what
was once formidable.
Rudra! The auspicious andmerciful sin-eraserradiant in your garb
of peace,Come! Shining Lord of Kailasa.
Rudra! That blessed andbenign form of Thine, whichobliterates
the trace of allsins - with that mosthallowed and calm phase of
Thy being, reveal Thyself tous, O radiator of peace fromthe
Mount of Kailasa!
Note: - Rudra-Siva is saidto have two forms, theterrific and the
beatific,which are manifested atdifferent times.
O boon-granter, Lord of frozen Kailasa, transformyour fierce
foe-destroyingprojectile into the mercifularrow of salvation,Harm
not man and theother sentient beings, Oprotector of the holy
crag!
O Benefactor from theMount of Kailasa! Thatarrow which Thou
wieldestfor aiming at enemies,make that benign (inrespect of us);
harm nothuman beings or others increation, O Protector in
thesacredMount!
O mountain top dweller, Weinvoke you with thesesacred verses,
Yearning foryour shining presenceMay the whole of space befreed!
Let the ubiquitoustendrils of pain and sorrowbe transformed into
sweetscented jasmine flowers of
joy and well-being
Resident of the Mountains!We pray to Thee withauspicious
eulogies, for thesake of attaining Thee; doso deign that this
wholeworld of ours is rid of allailment and affliction, andblooms
with a joyous mind.
May I be embedded in yourheart-mind-awareness,Mahadeva,
sympatheticand magical subduer of allevil. Even poisonouscreatures,
fell beasts, trolls,goblins, giantsAnd all other
malevolentspirits
